FORT LEONARD WOOD

A COLORFUL PAST

Fort Leonard Wood's history began with a modest ground-breaking ceremony on 3 December 1940. From that moment until May, 1941 workers by the thousands, together with their tools and equipment sprawled across the budding army camp - to be one of the largest in the country. Work pro- gressed through one of the wettest seasons the area had known and the muddy conditions attracted great publicity.

The new Camp was designated the VII Corps Training Area at first. When the administrative officers arrived it was named after Major General Leonard E. Wood. He had gained fame in the campaign against Geronimo and during the Spanish-American War. He was chief of Staff, United States Army from 1910 to 1914.

. . .

A PRODUCTIVE FUTURE

Lt. Col. Leo Crabbs was the first Post Commander, with his Head- quarters at 11th and Colorado Avenue. The Post then consisted of four bar- racks for enlisted men and one for officers. No modern facilities were avail- able and baths could only be obtained in local towns. Construction of build- ings continued and early in the spring of 1941 there was enough housing for the first cadres. The Engineer Replacement Training Center was organ- ized under the command of Brigadier General U. S. Grant, III.

More and more barracks were being built and the railway was extended from the town of Newburg, 21 miles away. The 6th Infantry Division arrived from Minnesota by train in May, 1941 and the 72nd Field Artillery Battalion came by motor convoy from Fort Knox.

After the 6th Division ( not to be confused with the 6th Armored Divi- sion ) came the 8th, the 75th, the 97th and the 70th, all of which trained one after the other prior to either maneuvers or overseas shipment. The ERTC continued to function and was later called the ASFTC (Army Serv- ice Forces Training Center). The Post trained more than 300,000 men between 1941 and 1946. At one time the population was around 50,000. In 1946 the Post was inactivated.

Some 50 civilians and about 5 officers remained to safeguard the build- ings and property. Soon the buildings began to fade and grass grew wild over the once busy training areas. For four years the Post lay dormant.

The Korean conflict brought demand for more trained troops and Fort Leonard Wood sprang to life once more. It was reactivated in August, 1950, and the 6th Armored Division was designated as a replacement training division. On 16 March 1956, after more than five years of training the divi- sion was deactivated and Fort Leonard Wood became the home of the United States Army Training Center, Engineer. The program now includes basic military training, advanced engineer training, specialist training and the leadership school.

F

Fort Leonard Wood continues to function mainly as an Engineer Train- ing Center. Its location and its terrain features make it well suited for the training of Engineer Troops. On 21 March 1956, the Post was given perma- nent status.

Today a modern 4-lane highway makes the approach to Fort Leonard Wood a pleasant one. The reservation is more than 70,000 acres in size. It was part of the Mark Twain National Forest until its acquisition as a military reservation. It is in the northern end of the Missouri Ozarks.

Nearby cities are: St. Louis, 130 miles northeast; Springfield, 88 miles southwest and the Missouri State Capitol at Jefferson City, 75 miles to the north. Fort Leonard Wood is located about halfway between the towns of Rolla and Lebanon on the famous highway 66. Waynesville is the nearest town; it is about five miles from the post and is the county seat of Pulaski County.

After a course at the Engineer School at Camp Humphrey, Va., he joined the Second Engineers at Camp Travis, Texas, in 1920. The following year he returned to the Engineer School and in June 1921 he was assigned to Scholfield Barrack, Hawaii with the Third Engineers. In May 1924 he returned for assignment to the First Engineers at Fort Dupont, Maryland and soon became a member of the Engineers Rifle team at Camp Perry, Ohio. When the National Matches were over for that year General Bowman was assigned to the 29th Engineers at Fort Humphrey. The following summer he was at Perry again firing for the Engineer Rifle Team. Again in 1929 he was at Perry and in the fall of that year he became Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn.

The summer of 1931 saw General Bowman back at Camp Perry as a member and Assistant Coach of the Engineer Rifle Team. He resumed his duties at Alabama Polytechnic Institute until May 1933 when he was named District Engineer at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana. The following August he returned to Alabama Polytechnic Institute.

General Bowman became assistant to the District Engineer, United States Engineers Office, Washington, D. C., with additional duty as Recorder for the Beach Erosion and Shore Protection Boards in June 1934. In 1941 General Bowman was named Engineer Officer of the Second Corps which moved to the European Theater of Operations in 1942. He was named Engineer of the Allied Force Headquarters, North African Theater of Operations, and when the Fifth Army was activated on 5 January 1943 he became the Engineer Officer. He landed in Italy in October 1943, and saw service with the Fifth Army until the war ended in 1945.

After two months in the United States General Bowman went to Japan where he became Engineer of the Northern Japan Service Command until March 1946 when he assumed command of Army Ground Forces in the Ryukus with Headquarters on Okinawa. He returned to the United States in June to become Chief of Staff, G-4, of the Army Ground Forces at Fort Monroe, Va. In 1949 he was appointed Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander at Fort Belvoir, Va.
