LIME AND STONE .- There is in Carthage and vicinity the fin-
25
CARTHAGE CITY DIRECTORY.
est Lime Stone known to the architect and builder. It is durable, easily worked. and of such fine texture that it will polish equal to the finest marble. It is being used for monuments, and is exten- sively used for building purposes for hundreds of miles around Car- thage, including St. Louis, Kansas City and Wichita. The lime produced from this rock is ot superior quality, and is marketed in Arkansas, Texas, Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska. There are in the city three extensive lime works, with a combined capacity of Soo barrels per day. Employ 100 hands, with a pay roll of $900 per week. At one of these lime works a specialty is made of di- mension stone. Blocks of stone weighing from thirty to forty tons each are sawed by steam power direct from the quarry, and are thence transferred to sawing rooms, where two sets of gang saws are run, and these immense blocks of stone are cut into any re- quired dimension. Another company has been organized with large capital, that will establish a plant this season of even more extensive machinery and capacity than the former.
PRINTING ESTABLISHMENTS .- The Newspaper and Job Printing Houses of the city give employment to 42 hands, with a pay roll of $350 a week.
By the foregoing it will be seen that there are employed in the manufacturing establishments of Carthage 441 hands, with a pay roll of $4,063 per week. This is a respectable showing considering the age of our city and the infancy of our industries, and yet it will be observed that some of the more important lines are represented upon a very limited scale, while there are a num- ber of industries not represented at all, by which it is shown that we have an inviting field for capital and labor in this direction.
In addition to what has been said of Carthage we may add that there are two public and several private parks. The surface of the city is gently undulating, thus giving it fine natural drain- age. Its streets are of the finest natural McAdam, never getting muddy, and studded on either side by splendid forest trees in many instances overreaching the streets, thus forming great arch- ways leading through a forest of homes surrounded by the orna- ments of nature and art.
