Alexander, William H., of Sardis, Pan- ola county, may be consistently desig- nated the founder of the town, to which he applied its name, while he has been one of the leading upbuilders of the town and county, having here maintained his home for more than sixty years and thus being numbered among the venerable pioneer citizens of the State. Mr. Alex- ander was born in the State of Illinois, in the year 1821, and is a son of Jesse H. and Nancy (Collier) Alexander. The father was born in North Carolina, and after his marriage lived for a short time in Illinois, whence he removed to Ten- nessee when the subject of this sketch was an infant, and in that State he and his wife passed the remainder of their lives, while his vocation during practically his entire active career was that of blacksmithing. W. H. Alexander passed his youth in Tennessee, where he received a common-school education and also learned the blacksmith trade under the direction of his father. In 1844 he came to Mississippi and took up his residence on the site of the present Sardis bank, being one of the first to locate here and having given the name of Sardis to the embryonic village, after reading three chapters of the Revelations, in the Bible, in order to secure a title of attractive order. At this time the county was very sparsely settled, Belmont and old Panola being the county seat and principal towns. There was an abundance of wild game, such as turkey, bear and deer. He secured the establishment of a postoffice here, was the first postmaster of the town and served as such for a quarter of a century. He also opened the first blacksmith shop, which he conducted a number of years, while he early en- gaged in the general merchandise business and in the buying and shipping of cotton, which latter phase of enterprise carried on at Mastodon had his attention for a score of years. He has been the owner of a large amount of real estate in this county and has erected numerous buildings in Sardis and otherwise contributed to its material upbuilding, as well as its civic advancement. owns valuable local realty, including his fine residence property, on East Lee street. A stanch supporter of the principles of the Democratic party, Mr. Alexander has long taken an active interest in the promotion of its cause, but he has never sought official preferment, though he has been called upon to serve in various local offices of public trust, no man in the community being held in higher regard than is he. During the earlier portion of the Civil war he aided the cause of the Confederacy by serving as foreman in a gun- shop maintained by the State of Mississippi, while he was a soldier in a Mississippi regiment of infantry during the latter part of the great fratricidal conflict which brought defeat to the Confederate arms. In 1842 Mr. Alexander was united in marriage to Miss M. S. Hodges, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Puckett) Hodges, and they have four children, three of whom are living, namely : Candia P., who resides in Sardis; Thomas H., who was the first white child born in this town; Mary F., Eliza Jane, died Oct. 11, 1868.
Aikman, William Harley, M. D., who is engaged in the practice of his profes- sion in the city of Natchez, is one of the able and successful physicians and sur- geons of this section of the State and has a large practice in his chosen field. The Doctor was born in the city of Evans- ville, Ind., Aug. 21, 1858, and is a son of William M. and Rachel A. (Long) Aikman, the former of whom was born at Washington, Ind., and the latter near Paducah, Ky. On the paternal side a great-grandfather and three great-uncles of the Doctor were found enrolled as patriot soldiers of the Continental line in the War of the Revolution. On both the paternal and maternal sides he had uncles in both the Confederate and Federal armies in the war between the States. The parents of Dr. Aikman moved to New Orleans when he was six years of age where he passed his childhood continuing to reside there until his removal to Natchez. Dr. Aikman completed a course in the Central high school in the city of New Orleans and then entered the medical department of Tulane university, in that city, and in that institution he was graduated as a member of the class of 1885, duly receiving his de- gree of Doctor of Medicine. From that time to the present he has been engaged in the practice of his profession in Adams county, except for one year passed in Kansas City, Mo. In 1880 he grad- uated in pharmacy and he was thereafter incumbent of responsible positions in this profession. He first came to Natchez in 1882, as manager for the wholesale and retail drug business of Walton, Clark & Company, with which concern he remained until the busi- ness was sold to F. A. Dicks, when he returned to New Orleans and resumed his medical studies in Tulane university. He controls
