Independent and Progressive

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of this city directory and the world's largest independent publishers of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association or directory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the indi- vidual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progres- sive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.

The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used 30 years ago, the Baldwin organization has led the way to the produc- tion of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.

Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars con- cerning this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1947 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an au- thentic and useful city directory.

We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.

This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the modern business world, with its greatly changed sales and credit sys- tems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapt. ing the directory to modern conditions, the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretatior of modern business requirements.

SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK

The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:

1. The Miscellaneous Directory contains a great deal of useful in formation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it ar listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.

2. The Buyers' Guide and Civic Section is made up of the adver tisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements o: churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional cards o; public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces hav been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptiv of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when prop erly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building o. business in the community.

7

INTRODUCTION-Continued

3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.

4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.

e

5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non- profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.

e 6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.

SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES

The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type e of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :

Number of dependents under sixteen;

Designation of home ownership;

Nationally Advertised Brands;

Numerical Telephone Directory;

Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.

In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD. type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beau- tifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the busi- ness district for the use of the general public.

THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT

After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the House- holders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Ev- ery advertisement which appears in a Baldwin Directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

ALBEMARLE, NORTH CAROLINA STANLY COUNTY

"14,000 FRIENDLY PEOPLE"

Albemarle, is the county seat of Stanly County, formed in 1841 and hamed for John Stanly of New Bern, several times speaker of the House of Commons, Albemarle was named for the first "county" created wholly in North Carolina (1663) which had been named for the Duke of Albe- marle, one of the first "Lords Proprietors of the Carolina." "Everybody Likes Albemarle" has been adopted as the official slogan of the city.

Lying in the Piedmont section of North Carolina, Albemarle and Stanly County combine diversified industry and diversified agriculture so that the population is never entirely dependent on one industry or one

Albemarle is a city of home owners and Stanly County is a county of farm owners. With a citizenship of the caliber which home and farm ownership indicates, it is easy to understand why Albemarle and Stanly County are such desirable places in which to live or establish a business.

Aside from the advantages of diversification many other reasons add to Albemarle's desirability. It is located in the ideal' climate prevailing in Piedmont North Carolina. The summers are not excessively hot and

winters so mild that snow is seldom seen. Rainfall totals approximatel fifty inches annually, which is sufficient to produce crops, vegetables an flowers in abundance.

INDUSTRIAL POSSIBILITIES

Albemarle and Stanly County have more industrial potentialities that any other section of the Piedmont. At the present time there are som thirty odd textile units in this section, running some two hundred fifty thousand spindles and employing forty-two hundred persons; hosiery mill both large and small, one upholstery plant, two furniture plants, on store fixture plant, one sheet metal fabrication plant, two large lumbe: plants, one large flour mill, a feed plant, the largest stone and marble works in the state, a milk receiving plant and many industries.

Sites for industrial plants, many of them on railroad sidings, ar available at reasonable prices, and some concessions of various kinds may be secured for manufacturers who expect to employ labor.

The town and county governments have always been eminently fail to industry in Stanly County and since this attitude of fairness is one of the qualities of our citizenship, industry need have no fear of future gov. erning bodies.

Power is available at reasonable rates. Albemarle has a municipal distributing plant and power is purchased from the Duke Power Company. Seven miles from Albemarle, on the Yadkin River at Badin, are two power dams which supply the power used in the operation of the Carolina Alumi- num Company, largest single unit aluminum plant in the world. At Nor- wood, eleven miles south of Albemarle, the Carolina Power and Light Company has a power dam and there is another dam at High Rock in Davidson County, just north of Stanly County. Approximately 30 per cent of the hydro-electric power generated in North Carolina is generated on the Yadkin river, a short distance from Albemarle. Unlimited power at reasonable rates is always available to manufacturers.

INDUSTRIAL STATISTICS

Stanly County has approximately 2,700 farmers. It has 261,000 acres of farm land with 96,000 acres in crop land. The County is made up largely of small landowners who live on and operate their own farms. We have only about thirty-five per cent tenancy in the county. The topography ranges from lever, gently rolling, or rolling to steep, hilly and mountainous. The soils of the county are adapted to the growing of most any crop. It is well suited for the growing of fruit. Several orchards are already established in the county.

Approximately 50,000 acres are grown to lespedeza for hay and soil building purposed each year. Two-thirds of the total crop land in the county is seeded to crops that are non-depleting in soil fertility.

ALBEMARLE, NORTH CAROLINA

11

ately Stanly County is recognized as one of the best diversified counties in andthe state. The acreage to crops grown are as follows:

Lespedeza, first year, 37,000; second year, 17,000; Wheat, 27,000; Corn, 21,000; Oats, 15,000; Cotton, 5,898.

Livestock: Milk cows, 6,230; Hens, 90,000; Brood Sows, 705; Tur- harkeys, 2,500.

The establishment of the Carnation Milk Company's Receiving Sta- tion in Albemarle in the fall of 1939 made available a market for all the whole milk that can be produced in the county. A large number of farm- ers are taking advantage of this market and are adding additional income to their farms through the sale of milk. The increased number of pure- bred dairy cattle and dairy bulls placed in the county each year indicates growing interest in dairying.

Albemarle High School

Recently the Stanly Dairies has been established in Albemarle which helps supply Grade "A" milk to the town of Albemarle and small towns in the county. A number of Grade "A" dairymen of the county furnish milk to this plant to be distributed to the consumers.

Poultry production is recognized as one of our leading sources of cash income. Approximately 90,000 laying hens are now in the farms of the county, with rapid improvement being made from year to year in the care and management of poultry.

Stanly County ranks about sixth in the state for the total number of tractors, with over 700 farm tractors now in use.

There are approximately 6,000 miles of rural electric lines in the county giving service to 1,800 farm families.

MUNICIPAL FACILITIES

Ninety-five per cent of Albemarle's streets are paved with concrete o tar and gravel.

The water system, which is owned and operated by the city, has : capacity of one and one quarter million gallons per day, however, the present average consumption is approximately three-quarter of a million gallons per day. Beautiful Long Creek reservoir is the source of supply and the water is given a very high rating by the State Board of Health.

A new sewage disposal plant and incinerator has just been completed

A well trained and equipped Fire Department is housed with a new City Hall building.

Albemarle's electric and water rates to consumers are lower than the average. The profit from the sales of water and power makes it possible to operate the municipality without levying any taxes except for debt service.

MORROW MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

Seven miles east of Albemarle in the Uwharrie Mountains is located Morrow Mountain State Park. It contains 4,100 acres of forested lands and includes eight separate peaks. Much of the park is virgin territory. It boasts a swimming pool which will accommodate 450 swimmers, ad- jacent wading pool, bath houses, picnic shelters, fireplaces, cabin grills, trails, and an Administration building complete with assembly room, dining room, soda shop and kitchen.
