"In the Land of the Sky"
Asheville, the principal city of Western Nerth Carolina and the county seat of l'uncombe County. North Carolina, has long been famous as a year around resort city, and as a distribution and industrial center of importance In the mid- south. The population of Asheville in 1932 is 50,193 and that of Buncombe County 97,937. Occupying a position on a high tableland, 2,300 feet above sea level In the mountains of Western North Carolina, the elty Is favored with a climate which is mild at all seasons and which is a contributing factor to the fame of the city as a resort.
The mountain region surrounding Asheville has long been known by the poetic title of "The Land of the Sky." The name was first applied to the region by Christian Reid (Mrs. Frances Christian Fisher Tlernan), a gifted author. The section Is noted for the beauty of the mountains and for the crystal clear atmosphere, a product of the high altitude. The mountains of the Land of the Sky have an individuality and a charm of their own; they are traversed by clear streams of pure water and In many of the high mountain valleys, lakes have been created which add much to the charm of the section.
Industrial and commercial activity in Western North Carolina center upon Asheville as the principal center of trade. The amount of the annnal tourist trade in the section is an important factor in the wealth of the city and sur- rounding trade areas. Abundance of water power and natural resources has resulted in a growing industrial activity. Manufacturing has followed a num- ber of different lines. Leather, paper, hlankets, rayon. bleached cotton goods furniture, brooms, mica products, dimension lumber, homespun woolens and other products are produced in the plants of the section. Since 1900, the value of manufactured products In Buncombe County has increased from $3,000,000 to more than $36,000,000. Near Asheville the American Enka Corporation is operating a $10,000,000 rayon plant which has more than doubled the total value of manufactured goods in the county.
Water power in Western North Carolina is a great contributing factor in the industrial growth of the section. The dam of the Carolina Power Company on the Pigeon River, near Ashevilic, is the newest unit in hydro-clectric de- velopment in the mountains of this region. The dam develops more than 100,000 horsepower.
The business and commercial development of Asheville is measured by the dollar volume of business In the city, which has increased over one hun- dred percent in the past ten years. The population has increased 91.7 percent in the past decade. Asheville has a splendid public school system, consisting of ten grammar schools, two junior high schools and one senior high school for white pupils and four grammar schools and one high school for colored children. A Junior College Is also a part of the educational system.
The city has a well-developed civic center which is constructed around Pack Square. A public library, a city market, the central fire station and the handsome new city and county buildings are located here. The city has a well constructed system of pubile streets, including several viaducts and brliges connecting the eastern part of the municipality with the West Asheville sec- tion beyond the French Broad River. The Beancatcher Vehicular Tunnel adds to the convenience of motor traffle entering the city from the east.
Mountain Industries
The mountain industries are uniquely characteristic of Asheville and West - ern North Carolina. They had their origin over thirty years ago under the sponsorship of George W. Vanderbilt, and are profitably operated by the moun

taineers of the section. Among the industries might be mentioned the 'Bilt- more Industries, located near Grove Park Inn, where pure woolen homespun Is made by mountain weavers on hand looms. C., carving artistic and useful objects from wood, rug making and quilting are among thie innumerable enterprises which engage the attention of the mountain handcraft workers.

The boundaries of the city have been enlarged from time to time, the last extension having been made in 1929.
Transportation
The Southern Railway serves Asheville with four lines which give the city rail connections with all parts of the country. Increasing freight traffic through the city has necessitated the construction of a new freight station. Nearly 1,000 miles of paved state highways connect Asheville with other parts of "The Land of the Sky," making motoring one of the most attractive means of see- ing the scenic beauty of the mountain region.
