PRO BONO PUBLICO

PREFACE

-

We take pleasure in submitting Vol. XXV of the Asheville, N. C., Directory. While no directory is free from errors, we feel sure the Asheville Directory wili rank above the average city directory and will give general satisfaction. Experienced help only has been used in col- lecting the data for this directory, and if there are any omissions of names it is not due to the fact that the ground was not fully covered by our canvassers, for a house-to-house canvass was made. It cften occurs that a person, in giving the information for the directory, over- looks or forgets to give names of persons that should be listed, and in such cases it is not the fault of the publisher that some names are left "out. As a ruie these omissions are few. Of course, the printers have to make a few typographical errors-they would not be printers if they did not-but as a whole we know that the Asheville Directory can be relied upon, and will be found by all who use it to be a very valuable book of information, and one which no up-to-date business man can afford to be without.

We desire to thank our patrons for their liberal support, by which this publication was made possible. We also desire to extend our thanks to our many friends and the publie in general for the courteous way in which they supplied us with the proper data. It is a pleasure for us to publish a directory in a city where the people are interested in the making up of a work of this character as was the case in Ashe- vilie. This of itself is good evidence that Asheville is a good, live, up-to-date city, and a good place in which to live.

We shali continue this publication, and promise you efficient service.

Primarily a resort city Asheville, North Carolina, is situated within 24 hours traveling distance of any terminal point within an area inhabited by over fifty million people, or half the population of the United States. It possesses a cli- mate which is acknowledged the best for all year round desirability among resort places. The climate is both healthful and comfortable, extremes in tem- perature being practically unknown.

The population of Asheville, Including suburbs, is conservatively placed at 60,000, 38,000 of this number dwelling within the city limits. The 1920 census gives a figure of 28,500, but the number of new homes built and occupied since this time fully accounts for an addition of 10,000 to the population.

During the past four years a tremendous increase of residential districts out- side the city has taken place to accommodate a large number of families at- tracted by the climatic conditions and the scenery of this region. The tourist business, which is the most important asset in Asheville's commercial life, lasts the whole year round, having its main season, however, in the spring, summer and autumn. Great numbers of people returning from the extreme southern resort places stop in Asheville during the spring months, escaping the heat of the coast resorts and awaiting the end of severe winter in the northern cities.

In the middle of summer and particularly in August and September, Asheville Is attractive to tourists from all over the South who have to escape the extreme heat of the lowlands and come to the mountain plateau of which Asheville is the center. The low summer temperature which allows the use of blankets every night is so great an attraction to southern people that a great many maintain summer homes in Asheville and vicinity.

In addition to the tremendous development of residential sections, many milllons have been expended by local and outside corporations in the extension and Improvement of the Asheville business district. Since the opening of the Battery Park Hill development, a number of new office structures and stores have been erected, and several more are contemplated. Under construction at the end of the year, is the Grove Arcade building, occupying the whole Battery Park Plaza, and to contain 80 stores as well as 7 floors of offices. This building,

because of its design, is unique in North Carolina construction at this time. Other important business developments have taken place on Market Street where an & story hotel building, a five story apartment house, and a number of commercial structures are being completed."

Among the important undertakings on the program of the City of Asheville, is the widening of Lexington Avenue by cutting back a number of large struc- tures, the completion of a number of new streets facilitating through traffic, the completion of the new City Market building, the building of a Municipal golf course which will be opened during the summer of 1926, and which promises to be one of the finest of its kind in the South. A number of new school build- ings have been erected during the year, and several of the old ones have been enlarged, to keep up with the rapidly increasing enrollment which has been a notable feature of Asheville's growth.

Under Chamber of Commerce direction, the City has successfully operated Its system of parks and playgrounds, including its model baseball field.

The hotels of Asheville at the end of 1925 have a total guest capacity of 2,500, while the many inns and boarding houses of a high class can accommodate about the same number. Several apartment houses also have sprung up during recent years and others are contemplated to further enlarge the city's capacity. The hotels having the 2,500 guest capacity are the Grove Park Inn, Kenilworth Inn, Battery Park Hotel, George Vanderbilt, Manor, Princess Anne, Langren, Jenkins and Swannanoa-Berkeley.

Next to the climate the scenic attractions of the city and countryside are important in drawing visitors and new residents. Set in the heart of the South- ern Appalachian System, thirty miles from Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains, Asheville is surrounded by a round score of peaks over 6,000 feet high and about sixty more exceeding 5,000 feet. These mountains are covered with a rich vegetation, the stand of hardwood timber in this section being the finest reservoir of this important commodity in America.

These mountains with their forest covered sides form an important item in the conservation of water power, in Buncombe County, of which Asheville is the capital, there being 25,000 potential horsepower, only 3,000 of which has been developed. From the visitor's point of view they are a great attraction, offering motor trips of unequalley beauty together with hikes which well reward the industrious climber.

From the climatic point of view the ranges on all sides of the city ald In breaking hard winds and not infrequently in diverting from their course severe storms. While offering this protection they at at sufficient distance from the city itself to afford wide sweeping views of the countryside from any point.

A feature of which Asheville is not unjustly proud is its excellent water supply, derived from watersheds on the slopes of Mount Mitchell and the Craggy range. This water under analysis shows a remarkable purity and is so satisfactory to the taste that is is often drunk for pleasure by people who ac- customed to lower grades of water find the Asheville supply wonderful. Even in the middle of summer it comes from the faucet as cold as it runs down the slopes of the high peaks.

The city has the distinction of being the birthplace of scientific forestry in America and of good roads in the South. George W. Vanderbilt bought about 150,000 acres of land near Asheville over thirty years ago and here in addition to building a home that is considered one of the finest country homes in America and is also an architectural masterpiece, he put in operation scientific forestry and in this he included a school of forestry in which many present day experts obtained their grounding. When at his death in 1914 the larger part of this was sold to the Government it was converted into Pisgah National Forest and is now a permanent monument to the foresight of this great American.

As a direct consequence of his developing this property the first hardsurfaced highways in North Carolina were built in Buncombe County and this lead in road building has been maintained until Buncombe is one of the best paved counties in the entire South.

In a unique manner, Asheville is honoring the memory of this, one of her greatest men. A library has been founded, which is composed entirely of auto- graphed works of American and English authors who thus pay tribute to the memory of the father of the short story. Unlike a monument of stone or bronze,

this memorial will be ever renewed by the contribution of each succeeding generation.

In Asheville, is the last resting place of William Sidney Porter, the O. Henry beloved by millions of Americans. In Riverside Cemetery he lies with only a simple marker at his head, the name "Porter" in large letters little suggesting the romantic tale which ended at that spot. From the sloping hill which is his last resting place opens out a view over the French Broad River and the hills beyond which surrounds the spot with an atmosphere of beauty and peace.

Another national character whose last resting place is near Asheville is Bill Nye, famous humorist. He is buried in a little cemetery not far from Arden on the road from Asheville to the South.

These two graves are often visited by tourists and are among the principal points of interest surrounding Asheville. Other interesting spots frequently visited are: Sunset Mountain, overlooking the city, Mount Pisgah in the center of Pisgah National Forest, Mount Mitchell, the top of eastern America, Chimney Rock, an unusual granite formation known all over the country as a point of interest, and many others. Good highways spread in all directions placing no limit on the travel to the motorist in Asheville. He can motor in two days to Cincinnati, Washington, Richmond or Savannah, and by pushing can make Jack- sonville in the same time. Within one day's time he can reach Atlanta, Knox. ville, Charlotte, Spartanburg or Greenville and other cities, many of these in two or three hours driving time.

The closer attractions offer the greatest inducement to motorists who spend a part of the year in Asheville and the many scenic highways which are grad- ually being connected into loop systems are always heavily traveled. A road which is to be improved during the present year will offer one of the hest short drives in the section, passing over Sunset Mountain to Mountain Meadows Inn and Cravens Gap, and returning by way of Beaverdam Valley and Beaver Lake. The latter, built during 1924, is becoming a great attraction for Asheville resi- dents and visitors, offering boating and swimming to suit all tastes. A con- creted swimming pool at one end of the lake is very popular, protecting the less expert swimmer from the dangers of open water. A scnic drive around this lake and the adjoining development known as Lakeview and returning by way of Burnsville Hill and Woodfin, where the largest furniture factory in the South is located, is also very popular.

The later part of this drive follows the French Broad River at a point where the major part of Asheville's industries are located, a spur track from the Southern Railway System serving this section. Two factories, the Carolina Wood Products Company and the National Casket Company, have chosen this spot and a number of smaller industries are located here. Broad level land for factory sites served by the railway are available here offering opportunities for further industries.

Another industrial center is on the Swannanoa Valley, where a large bleach- ery has been erected by the Beacon Manufacturing Company, of New Bedford, Mass. A $2,000,000 bleachery is also being erected in this district by the Sayles Finishing Company of Rhode Island, which contemplates an ultimate investment of $5,000,000 in this plant. A large rock crushing plant has been placed in operation by E. W. Grove in the vicinity of Swannanoa and a number of lumber and planing mills are found here. Other industries, including the Hans Rees Tanning Company and the Asheville Cotton Mills, are located in the vicinity of Asheville's freight terminal, where also a large packing plant has been com- pleted by the Baker Packing Company.

The dairy industry has grown largely in the county, with two creameries, the Biltmore Dairy and the Carolina Creamery, taking the lead and a dozen other retail darles finding a market in the city. Strict standards for the in- spection of both cows and milk give an absolute safeguard to the users of milk in Asheville, while the excellent green fodder available at all times of the year and the careful elimination of scrub stock give a grade of milk renowned for its proportion of butter fat.

Asheville has also, in The Miller Press, the largest directory and publication

house in the entire South, and this conceru has just completed a splendid new nve-story building to take care of its printing business.

Agriculture has also received a new impulse and particularly truck gardening which is to a greater extent than ever supplying local and outside markets with home-grown vegetables. This development is generally considered of great significance in the development of a self-contained and independent community producing enough food for its own consumption and for export also. The de- velopment of apple growing has also come to assume important proportions, Buncombe County being third among the hundred counties of the State in num- ber of fruit trees pianted and bearing.

The County of Buncombe, like the City of Asheville, has had a constantly growing school enrollment to contend with, and is continually erecting consol- idated schoois doing away with the "little red school-house." This is made possible by the construction of good roads, trucks being furnished to carry the children from outlying districts to and from their classes. Every effort is made in both city and county to furnish the best in the way of teaching and equip- ment possible. Outdoor exercise is an important part of school activities and classes in manuai training in the high schools have met with notable success, wood carving particularly being executed with considerable skill by the students. Departments of home economics for girls are also conducted, exhibits from these classes showing considerable proficiency.

In spite of the heavy program of improvements undertaken by the city, Asheville's tax rate is extremely low, comparing favorably not only with other resort cities but with practically all cities of the United States having a popu- lation of 30,000 to 50,000. The amount paid by Asheville residents, including school and county tax is $2.04, while in Los Angeles the total tax is $3.96. Other examples compare equally favorable for Asheville. Rates for water, electric lights, gas and telephone service are also moderate.
