Independent and Progressive
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of this city directory and the world's largest independent publishers of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association or directory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory sub- scriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.
The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used 30 years ago, the l'aldwin organization has led the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.
Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concern- ing this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

CHARLESTON
CITY DIRECTORY
.1936
This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as origi- nated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the mod- ern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapting the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the pro- gressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.
SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK
The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows :
1. The Miscellaneous Directory contains a great deal of useful in- formation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.
2. The Buyers' Guide, Civic Section and Professional Blue Book is made up of the advertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional card of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under head- ings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.
INTRODUCTION
3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.
4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.
5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents and distributors.
6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.
7. The Rural Routes Directory, which follows the Numerical Tele- phone Directory, is used constantly in reaching rural residents with adver- tising matter and other mail.
SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES
The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :
Number of dependents under sixteen;
Designation of home ownership.
Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.
Numerical Telephone Directory. Nationally Advertised Brands.
In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beautifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.
THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the House- holders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "Amer- ica's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.
BALDWIN DIRECTORY CO., Inc.
EXPLANATION
All people sixteen years or over are listed.
Wives are listed with husbands, the wife being shown in parenthesis as follows: Smith Robt R (Mary L.)
The number of children under sixteen years is shown after the wife's name as follows: Smith Robt R (Mary L) 3.
The H), both in the resident directory and the householders' directory designates ownership of the home.
In case of a natural widow this fact is shown with the name of the deceased husband in parenthesis, whenever possible, as follows: Smith Mary L (wid Robt R).
The occupation and place of employment are shown as follows: Smith Robert R (Mary L) clk Hub Clothing Co.
The residence of each person is shown, "h" denoting a householder or head of the family, "r" denoting people in the home. Only one person at each home should be shown with the "h." Thus, a circular mailed to each householder will reach every home in the city.
Married women, engaged in some other occupation than housekeeping, are listed individually in additon to their regular listing with their husbands, as follows: Smith Mary L (Mrs Robt R) bkpr Henry Jones & Co r 210 Main.
Names in heavy type denote patrons of the directory and are usually the leading firms in each line of business.
Persons living outside the city limits and receiving mail in the country are marked RD.
The letters BD shown on some entries indicate Buyers Directory.
Colored is shown by a O. The publishers are very careful in using this, but do not assume any responsibility in case of error.
This directory contains all the regular departments of the modern city directory and many features used by no other publisher in the United States.
A numerical telephone directory will be found in the back of the directory listing each telephone according to number.
A Rural Route Directory will be found in back of this volume.
The classified business directory lists each firm according to line of business.
The numerical street directory lists each street alphabetically and each house according to number, with the street intersections as they appear. After each householders name will be found his telephone number. In case he has no telephone the nearest telephone may be found. The H denotes householders who own the house in which they live.
The buyers guide carries the printed messages of the city's leading business and professional firms arranged alphabetically according to classifications.
This directory shows the exact population of the city and environs at the present time.

Lumberton
NORTH CAROLINA
Historic Lumberton, capital of "the State of Robeson," the old ship- ping port of the Lumber River, and 150 years ago known as Red Bank Plantation, this year celebrates its 150th anniversary. Lumberton be- came a town by act of the general assembly of North Carolina on Novem- ber 3, 1788. It was incorporated in 1852-sixty-four years after its founding. The town was established on a 170-acre tract of land that had l'ormed a part of the 11,776-acre plantation holding of Gen. John Willis, soldier of the American Revolution, and because of his efforts, Gen. Willis
E. M. Johnson, Mayor
has since come to be known as "the Father of Lumberton." Gen. Willis also had been instrumental in having Robeson County formed from lands formerly belonging to Bladen County.
Lumberton is thought to have been so named because of the fact it was the point of shipment of log rafts down the Lumber River to George- town, S. C.
Jacob Rhodes, a surveyor, laid out the town on the basis of a plat he filed under date of May 5, 1787, along with a plan for the conduct of a lottery to dispose of town lots. The lottery was scheduled for August 14, 1787.
10
LUMBERTON
Trees covered the entire area set aside to be made into the town of Lumberton, and many trees had to be cut down to make room for the courthouse, for business houses and for residences. Lots were laid off in half-acre size, with streets, a commons and public square.
Where tickets calling for town lots were not presented, the town managers were directed to rent out the lots for the best prices obtainable. The five men to whom Gen. Willis had conveyed the town lands had been named by the new court of Robeson County to conduct the affairs of the lottery.
Aerial view of the business district of Lumberton showing the section of the city devoted to tobacco in the background. Ten city blocks are already occupied by tobacco warehouses and factories. This year contracts will be let for the construction of two more warehouses, both occupying
two and a half acres.
11
NORTH CAROLINA
As the courthouse was the active center of Lumberton in its first days, so it has remained for the century and a half since the establish- ment of the county and the town. The first business houses were erected along the water front, known then as "the wharf," and up and down the present Elm Street.
Lumberton kept its position as the center of business and activity for the county for more than sixty years without any substantial increase in population over the first days of its founding. When the town was incorporated in 1852 it is recorded that the population ran from 200 to 300 persons.
When Lumberton incorporated, Dr. Edmund McQueen became the first mayor, while Col. John Rowland drew up the city ordinances and named the streets. The first town commissioners to serve with Dr. Mc- Queen were E. Lewis, W. W. Gunn, J. M. Heartman and R. S. French.
It is doubtful if any of these first City Fathers would recognize any- thing in the vicinity of Lumberton, unless it be one of the many bends in the Lumber River, could they return now. Lumberton of 1938 is a city of 9751 inhabitants. Instead of depending on slow-moving barges which once brought freight up the Lumber River, the city is served by two rail- roads: the Virginia and Carolina Southern and the Seaboard Airline Railroads. In addition to these two railroads, seven hard-surfaced high- ways leading to the city from every direction make quick, cheap motor transportation from every part of the country possible. In 1852 there were no paved streets in Lumberton. A person plowed through mud to travel from one part of the village to another. When the present paving program is completed there will be very few residential streets in Lum- berton that are not hard-surfaced. Instead of the two or three stores here in 1852, there are now nearly 150 mercantile establishments in the city.

LUMBERTON
City Hall, Lumberton, which also houses Lumberton's fire fighting equipment. Headed by Chief Ed. J. Glover, the Lumberton Fire Depart- ment functioned so well during 1937 that the city suffered only $5,022.00 fire damage that year.

NORTH CAROLINA
Uptown in the business district a handful of country stores has been replaced by a group of modern store buildings that, if aligned, would stretch over a distance of 25 blocks. That the merchants who operate these stores are progressive is a proved fact since the latest government report shows that per capita Lumberton does a greater volume of retail business than any city in North Carolina its size and many more that are larger.
Lumberton has also become an industrial center. The principal in- dustries of Lumberton consist of three cotton mills, one large fertilizer factory, one marble works, and two large tobacco factories and a large lumber plant.
When tobacco is mentioned it brings another of Lumberton's con- tributors of business to mind. Suddenly becoming aware of the possibili- ties of this city's tobacco market, its business men and merchants began to give it the support it merits. Because of the efforts of these men who have put their shoulders to the wheel, the Lumberton market has shown a steady increase in sales each year. Selling just a little more than 13,000,000 pounds of tobacco in 1934, the market reached an all- time high mark in volume when it auctioned 27,000,000 pounds of tobacco during the past season. While the development of Lumberton as a shop- ping and industrial center and tobacco market has been given first men- tion, one cannot overlook the development in other ways. Its public school system is one of the best in the state and enjoys an A-1 rating which is the highest that can be given, while its churches are another source of pride for its citizens. A person wishing to locate anew would have to go far to find a place as ideal as Lumberton. The climate is mild with a mean temperature of 63.3 degrees; in addition to its many churches and excellent school system, there are two 75-bed hospitals to which patients are brought from surrounding territory within a 50-mile radius. There is a modern fireproof 100-room hotel; banking facilities are of the best; there are two newspapers and the cost of living is rea- sonable, while two picture shows, a municipal bathing beach with a dance pavilion and a nine-hole golf course offer recreation.
That Lumberton is progressive is revealed in the statement that it supports a Chamber of Commerce and has three civic clubs: Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, and the Minute Men's Club. But what appeals most to a person seeking a location, either to retire to a life of ease and com- fort or to invest in business or industry, what stands out greatest is the fact that Lumberton is governed by a group of sound conservative busi- nessmen, who, under the leadership of Mayor E. M. Johnson, have re- duced the bonded indebtedness of the city from more than $850,000 to $314,500 in little more than a decade. This bonded indebtedness has been cut down steadily since Mayor Johnson came into office in 1923 and Lun- berton boasts that it has never defaulted in the payment of either princi- pal or interest on its indebtedness. The city tax rate has been gradually decreased since that time. This in itself is a splendid testimonial of the ability of those to whom the citizens of Lumberton have entrusted the management of the city's affairs.
