Independent and Progressive
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publisher of this city directory and the world's largest independent publisher of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association, combination or directory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the indivi- dual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.
The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used thirty years ago, the Baldwin organization has led the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.
Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and in- dividual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concern- ing this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Bald- win directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city direc- tory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1940 edition to the general pub- lic. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked dili- gently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.
We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we be- lieve that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instru- ments for the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.
This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapting the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.
SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK
The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:
1. The Miscellaneous Directory, contains a great deal of useful information concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legisla- ture, city and county officials.
2. The Buyers' Guide and Civic Section is made up of the ad- vertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional cards of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyer's Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.
3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.
4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all house- holders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.
5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.
6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone num- bers arranged in numerical sequence.
SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES
The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :
Number of dependents under sixteen;
Designation of home ownership;
Nationally Advertised Brands.
Numerical Telephone Directory;
Telephone Numbers on Street Guide;
In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beau- tifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.
THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the origina- tors of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin Directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

CONCORD NORTH CAROLINA
YOU'LL LIKE CONCORD
By Harry Lee Johnston
Secretary Concord Merchants Association
The City of Concord is located in the heart of the famous Piedmont Plateau, which section is noted for its industry, rich farm lands and climate. The city occupies an ideal elevation of 703 feet. It is only three to four hours drive from the seashore or the moun- tains and the climate is regarded as near perfect.
Concord is on the main line (double tracked) of the Southern Railway and is 359 miles south of Washington and 289 miles north of Atlanta. The county is also traversed by the Norfolk-Southern Railway which runs from Charlotte, N. C., to Norfolk, Virginia. These railroads give the city and county excellent passenger and freight service to all leading markets, both north and south. The city also has excellent motor bus transportation, with direct service being maintained to all nearby points.
Concord is located in, and is the county seat of Cabarrus County and has a population of 15,556 people, a gain of 32% over 1930. The 1940 population of Greater Concord is 24,609, as com- pared to 22,485 in 1938. The city has shown a steady growth through the past several years and is now one of the best managed cities in the country and is in excellent condition financially. The people of the city as a whole are prosperous. Living and working conditions are excellent and the unemployment percentage is low.
The county has an estimated population of 60,000 and Concord serves a trading area consisting of some 75,000 to 100,000 people,

Greater Kannapolis has a population of some 25,000 people and is the home of Cannon Mills Company who operate the largest towel mills in the world. This city is truly a hive of industry.
City Government
The city of Concord has the aldermanic form of government and the governing body consists of a mayor and six aldermen, with one alderman elected from each of the city's five wards, and one at large. They are elected for a term of two years.
Concord now has a tax rate of $1.00 per $100.00 valuation, which shows a substantial reduction since 1930 at which time the tax rate was $1.42 per $100.00 valuation and in 1933 the valuation of real estate was lowered by 20 per cent. The total assessed valu- ation of real and personal property for tax purposes is $12,800,- 000.00.
The city has always enjoyed good government and its finan- cial matters have been ably handled. The peak of the city's in- debtedness was reached in 1925 when the net debt reached the sum of $1,440,000.00. Since that time the debt has been steadily re- duced until at this time the net debt stands at $636,700.00 as of June 30, 1940; which represents a reduction of more than 50 per cent. The city has an efficient engineering department, and has modern facilities for handling this work. Protection is afforded the citizens and property of Concord by a police force of 17 members and maintains a modern and efficient fire department equipped with the latest devices in fire fighting equipment.
