INTRODUCTION
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1947 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.
We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.
This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit sys- tems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapt- ing the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate inter- pretation of modern business requirements.
SIX DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK
The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:
1. The Buyers' Guide and Civic Section is made up of the adver- tisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional cards of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are de- scriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.
2. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.
INTRODUCTION
3. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.
4. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non- profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the name of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.
5. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.
6. Rural Route Directory contains names of all rural residents.
SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES
The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :
Number of dependents under sixteen; Designation of home ownership;
Nationally Advertised Brands;
Numerical Telephone Directory;
Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.
In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beauti- fully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.
THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make : the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke they established a guaranteed HOME circulation for advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the commu- nity. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin Directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

LUMBERTON NORTH CAROLINA
Lumberton was created by act of the general assembly of North Caro- lina on November 3, 1788, a year before George Washington became presi- dent of the United States, and was incorporated in 1852, a year before the outbreak of the War between the States. The founder was General John Willis, who measured off a 170-acre tract of land from his 11,776- acre plantation holding. He assigned Jacob Rhodes, a surveyor, to lay out the town on the basis of a plat that was filed under date of May 5, 1787, along with a plan for the conduct of a lottery to dispose of the town lots.
General Willis had been a soldier in the American Revolution, and he and his brother-in-law, Colonel Thomas Robeson, also of Revolution fame, had been responsible for the creation of Robeson County out of lands belonging to Bladen County. As a member of the general assembly and because of his work on behalf of the new county, the actual organization of the county and the town was a joint operation and Robeson County was named for Colonel Robeson.
Historians are not agreed as to the origin of the name of the new town of Lumberton, nor are they in agreement as to authenticity of the story that the original name of the river that flows through Lumberton was "The Lumbee". There is some evidence to the effect that Lumber -. ton was so named because it was an important "lumber town" at the time it was founded, and there is some evidence to prove that the Indians called the present Lumber River by the euphonious name "The Lumbee". Students of Indian language and lore are authority for the tradition that "ee" in the Indian tongue is the equivalent of the English word "river". By circuitous reasoning, there are some who contend that the Indians named the river and that Lumberton acquired its name from the river, and not because of the fact it was a lumber center.
The original 170-acre tract on which Lumberton was founded was said to have been entirely covered by trees, and that many large trees had to be but down to make way for the block that was set aside for a courthouse and for business houses and residences. Lots were laid off in half-acre size, with streets surveyed in four directions and space desig- nated for a commons and public square. The lottery was scheduled for
10
LUMBERTON
August 14, 1788, and when tickets calling for town lots were not presented, the town managers were directed to rent out the lots for the best prices obtainable. The affairs of the lottery were conducted by five men named by the new court of Robeson County as trustees of the town lands.
Lumberton's first business houses were erected along the Lumber River waterfront, then known as "the wharf," and up and down the pres- ent Elm Street, and the three or four courthouses that have served Robe- son County have been located on the original block set aside for that purpose by General Willis. Gradually, the business area has spread out from the first center, but for the 160 years of Lumberton's existence the bulk of the town's business has been transacted in areas lying close . to the courthouse block.
Little is known of the first sixty years of Lumberton's existence, but when the incorporated Town of Lumberton came into being in 1852 the population within its borders ran from 200 to 300 persons. Turpen- tine, timber and general naval stores products were the chief sources of industry.
Dr. Edmund McQueen was the first mayor of Lumberton, and Col. John Rowland, an outstanding public figure of that day, drew up the city ordinances and named the streets of the town. The first commis- sioners to serve with Dr. McQueen were E. Lewis, W. W. Gunn, J. M. Heartman and R. S. French. Lumberton furnished men for the Confed- erate Army during the War Between the States, and farmers of the Lum- berton area did much toward furnishing food for the Confederate Army, and particularly during the time of the defense of Fort Fisher, near Wil- mington. A detachment of Federal' troops passed through Lumberton near the close of the war, but there is no record of any armed clash.
Just four years short of being 100 years old as an incorporated town, the City of Lumberton has made great strides in the last fifteen or twen- ty years. Now a city of approximately 12,500 inhabitants, Lumberton is recognized as the leader in a large area in the southeastern tip of North Carolina. In the matter of transportation, Lumberton has two rail- roads-the Seaboard Air Line and the Virginia and Carolina Southern -a million dollar, Class 4 airport, eight hard-surfaced highways lead- ing into the city, several motor freight lines, and is the chief terminal of the Queen City Coach Co. in Eastern North Carolina, with more than 100 in-and-out buses daily.
At the turn of the century there were no paved streets in Lumber- ton, while. today there are miles and miles of paved streets and side- walks, and a big paving program is now underway. Less than two gen-
11-
NORTH CAROLINA
erations ago there was no sanitary system for Lumberton, while today there are miles and miles of sewage, storm sewage and water lines, and additional lines are being laid at this time under an enlargement pro- gram. The man who has telephone No. 1 in Lumberton well remembers when there was no telephone system in the city, and today Lumberton is the center for telephone service over a wide area. Where there were fewer than a dozen stores a hundred years ago there are now more than 300 successful retail establishments. The latest government and business estimates report that Lumberton does a greater volume of retail business than. any other town in North Carolina of similar population total.
In the early days Lumberton figured heavily as a cotton market, and today the local market is of considerable relative importance, but its greatest advance in an agricultural field has been the growth and expansion of the tobacco market. For several years now Lumberton has sold fifteen to twenty million dollars worth of tobacco each year, and there are now three large tobacco redrying plants in Lumberton to help in processing the tobacco crop that is grown and marketed in this sec- tion. Within the last ten years Lumberton has moved up from sixteenth to tenth place in the list of more than eighty flue-cured tobacco markets of the southeast. Lumberton not only sells large quantities of tobacco each year, but the Lumberton market is now recognized as one of the most stable markets in the entire flue-cured belt.
While Lumberton's economic background is largely agricultural there is sufficient industry to insure a good balance. Products from the thous- ands of acres of rich lands in Robeson and adjoining counties find a ready and high market in Lumberton, but at the same time the business and professional interests of Lumberton also enjoy the fruits of substantial industrial payrolls. As an indication of Lumberton's growing importance in the general business world as a center for business, the Carolina Power & Light Company has just recently begun the construction of a $15,000,000 steam electric power plant at Lumberton. This plant will not be com- pleted until some time in 1950, but eventually it will supply electric pow- er over a large territory.
Lumberton has two banks which have combined resources of above $25,000,000, one 100-room fireproof hotel, five registered tourist homes, an excellent city school system, and many large church congregations. There are two newspapers, one a daily and the other a weekly, a 250- watt radio station, a nine-hole golf course with excellent fairways and grass greens, a handsome new country club building, a city bus service, and three motion picture theatres. The Chicago Cubs operate a "base- ball farm" in Lumberton, with the Lumberton Cubs having a team in

the Tobacco State League, and Jennings Beach is a municipally owned recreation center.
A full-time and active Chamber of Commerce and a Merchants Asso- ciation look after Lumberton's business interests, while five civic clubs are active in this field of endeavor: Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce and Professional Women's Club. Over the years Lumberton has had a sound and progressive city govern- ment, and the town has the distinction of never having defaulted in the payment of either principal or interest on its indebtedness. Two modern hospitals are operated under a joint administration. The Lumberton climate is generally mild with a mean temperature of 63.3 degrees. The city is 142 feet above the sea-level. 1
Industrial leaders and students of economics are predicting a bright future for Lumberton. They say the next twenty-five years will witness great growth and expansion, with Lumberton moving far out in the lead as a greater agricultural market, as an outstanding trade center and as a city of good industrial payrolls.
