INDEPENDENT AND PROGRESSIVE
Baldwin Directory Company, publisher of the Asheville City Directory, is an independent organization, in no way connected with any national association, combination or directory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.
The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used thirty years ago, the Baldwin organi- zation has led the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.
Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concerning this type of directory service. In the future as in the past Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION
Baldwin Directory Company, publisher of the Asheville City Direc- tory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1935 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.
We have confidence in the continued growth of Asheville and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of the community. A new edition will be issued promptly each year in association with the Asheville Advocate.
ASHEVILLE NORTH CAROLINA CITY DIRECTORY 1935
BALDWIN DIRECTORY CO. ยท 'AND THE ASHEVILLE ADVOCATR.
The Asheville directory is a fine ex- ample of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Bald- win Directory Company. In the modern business world, with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapting the directory to modern con- ditions the Baldwin organization has been the pioneer. The excellent city directory which Asheville now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.
Seven Divisions of the Book
The principal departments of the Asheville directory are as follows: 1. The Miscellaneous Directory, which starts on page 21, contains a great deal of useful information concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, judges of the various courts, and city and county offi- cials. This section also gives legal holidays, population of cities, counties and states, capitals and county seats, and other valuable data.
2. The Buyers' Guide, Civic Section and Professional Blue Book, which starts on page 33, is made up of the advertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional cards of public-spirited law- yers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptive of the busi- ness engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when properly ar- ranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.
3. The Resident Directory, which starts on page 137, contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthe- sis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.
4. The Householders' Directory and Telephone Street Guide, which starts on page 575, gives the names of all householders arranged as they
7
INTRODUCTION
come upon the streets and avenues, and gives the telephone number at each house.
5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands, which starts on page 793, contains the names of all business firms, profes- sional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchan- dise, with the name of the local agents anddistributors.
WILLIAM J. REUSING
6. The Numerical Telephone Directory, which follows the Business Directory is a valu- able reference list in every business office.
7. The Rural Routes Directory, which fol- lows the Numerical Telephone Directory, is used constantly in reaching rural residents with ad- vertising matter and other mail.
Special ABCD Features
The following valuable information is used in the ABCD type of directory, but not in the old-fashioned city directory:
Number of dependents under 16; Designation of home ownership; Telephone Numbers on Street Guide; Numerical Telephone Directory; Nationally Advertised Brands; Rural Routes Directory.
In addition to these valuable additions, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more durably bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the busi- ness district for the use of the general public.
The Householders' Supplement
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the origina- tors of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guar- anteed home circulation for all advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supple- ment and delivering it to the homes of the community through the local Merchants As- sociation. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin city directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Bald- OTT'S GREEN win directory "the greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium in the South" today.

ASHEVILLE "In the Land of the Sky"
By JOHN D. TOPPING Publicity Director Asheville Chamber of Commerce
Asheville, North Carolina, the county seat of Buncombe County and principal com- mercial center of Western North Carolina, has a population of 50,193, according to the 1930 census. The population of the county in the 1930 census was 97,937.
A RESORT CENTER
Asheville is a resort cen- ter of international fame. The altitude of 2,300 feet above sea level being con- ducive to cool summers and the latitude in the mid- southern region influenc- ing mild winters. The Asheville section enter- tains many hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, due to the attractions of the climate and the sur- rounding scenic beauty of 'The Land of the Sky."
HISTORY
Asheville was founded in 1797 by John Burton and was at that time named Morristown. A few years later the city was renamed Asheville in honor of Samuel and John Ashe, noted men of the period. The city has long been a trading center and its development as a resort center covers the greater part of a century.
The Western North Carolina section, termed "The Land of the Sky," gained this name from a novel by Mrs. Christian Fisher Tiernan, who wrote under the name of Christian Reid.
GOVERNMENT
Asheville is governed under the Council- Manager form of administration. The city council consists of nine councilmen includ- ing the mayor. Administrative departments are headed by the city manager. Asheville has one of the finest fire departments in the United States, the city having one of the
5

lowest fire records of any city of the size in the country. The police department is one of the most efficient in its type of organiza- tion, the department using squad cars and radio communication in cooperation with county police departments.
Buncombe County has the commission form of government, the board consisting of three com- missioners in charge of de- partments of the county government. City and county governing bodies are housed in the fine city and county buildings flanking the central city plaza.
SCHOOLS
School systems of Bun combe County and of Asheville have been de- veloped to a high point of perfection. The system of- fers every facility from the grammar grades up to and through junior and senior high schools. A junior college is a part of the system. Physical equipment in the way of school buildings, has been de- veloped to a high state of perfection, the county schools operating on a consolidated basis with good high schools and with bus- transportation for students. Like other schools of North Carolina, the system is state-maintained.
WATER SUPPLY
Asheville's water supply comes from the summits of the highest mountains near the city. The water system operates by gravity and the water itself is of the purest quality obtainable. The lack of solids and soluble matter in the water gives it a delightfully soft character similar to pure distilled water. It may be used in storage batteries without distillation and is particularly valuable to
10
ASHEVILLE
industries requiring a chemically pure water supply.
CLIMATE
Asheville's climate is noted for its health- giving qualities. The altitude of the city, 2,300 feet above the sea, is conducive to an

exhilarating atmosphere having curative qualities for a number of pulmonary dis- eases and is particularly beneficial also to many nervous afflictions.
In the region of the highland country, particularly at Asheville, are located many institutions for the treatment of sufferers from these afflictions. Sanatoria of the Asheville section are famous throughout the world, and have made this city a great health center as well as a recreational region.
HOMES
Asheville is a city of fine homes. The many fine residential sections are of a type to be found in cities of much larger size. Many of the city's residents are retired from active business, having chosen Asheville as a home site after retiring from business ac- tivities in other sections of the country. Noted residential sections include Biltmore Forest, Malvern Hills, Lake View Park, Kenilworth and Grove Park.
COMMERCE
Asheville is the trading center for 18 counties of Western North Carolina. Here are located the distributing offices for com- mercial enterprises of this wide trade terri- tory. Because of its trading area, and its large volume of tourist trade, the city has become equipped with fine stores offering
a great variety of high class merchandise.
The city has been consistently one of the leading cities of the state in retail trade and is naturally a great wholesale center for the region.
The tobacco market established here five years ago with one warehouse, has grown to a point where four warehouses are now in operation and millions of pounds of fine Burley tobacco are sold here annually dur- ing the winter months. The Burley of the highlands is of the finest quality and com- mands top prices on the market. All of the crop sold on the Asheville market is grown on the mountain farms of the section.
POINTS OF INTEREST IN ASHEVILLE
Attention of visitors in the city is focussed upon a number of points of scenic, artistic and historic interest. The Asheville scenic highway, which traverses some score of miles along the summits of the mountains near the city, is one of the attractions of appeal to all visitors. This highway reveals to the motorist a series of panoramic views of the highland country, unsurpassed for their beauty.
Biltmore House and Gardens, the famous mansion built here a half-century ago by the late George W. Vanderbilt, is one of the favored points visited by tourists. The house itself is open to public view and contains a priceless collection of artistic and historic interest, collected in all parts of the world by Mr. Vanderbilt.

In Riverside cemetery is to be found the only monument ever erected by American soldiers to the memory of their foreign foes. This is the monument to eighteen German sailors who died in an Asheville hospital during the World War and whose graves remained unmarked until this generous gesture was made by Asheville Legion- naires. In the cemetery also are located the grave of Zebulon Vance, war-time governor and statesman of North Carolina and the tomb of O. Henry, famous short story writer.
In the Asheville city library is to be found the O. Henry collection of contemporary books autographed by their authors and col- lected and established in honor of O. Henry. The Biltmore Industries, where mountain weavers manufacture homespun cloth, is a point of interest to visitors and the nearby Grove Park Inn, noted for its construction from huge mountain boulders, its enor- mous central "big room" and huge fire- places, is often visited.
