Independent and Progressive
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publisher of this city directory and the world's largest independent publisher of city directories, is in no way connect- ed with any national association, combination or directory "trust". Its poli- cies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.
The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used thirty years ago, the Baldwin organization has led the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.
Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concerning this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION
-
Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publisher of your city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1936 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.
We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of the community. Sub- sequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.
CHARLESTON CITY DIRECTORY 1036
This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become com- pletely obsolete. In adapting the direc- tory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the pro- gressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern busi- ness requirements.
SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK
The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:
1. The Miscellaneous Directory contains a great deal of useful infor- mation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.
2. The Buyers' Guide, Civic Section and Professional Blue Book is made up of the advertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional card of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.
INTRODUCTION
3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parentheses, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.
4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.
5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents and distributors.
6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.
SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES
The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory.
Number of dependents under 16;
Designation of home ownership.
Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.
Numerical Telephone Directory.
Nationally Advertised Brands.
In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beautifully bound arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.
THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke - they established a guaranteed home circulation for all advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the com- munity. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

Community Building-At the close of the World War, the citizens of Goldsboro and Wayne County, of which Goldsboro is the County Seat, desired to pay tribute and to memor- ialize the young men of our city and county who served in the war, and, immediately following the signing of the Armistice, Goldsboro business in- terests launched a campaign to pro- vide a memorial building. This building was erected at a cost of $100,000, was financed entirely through public subscription by pa- triotic citizens of Goldsboro and Wayne County, and was the first memorial to be erected in the United States, following the close of the war, dedicated to World War heroes. This building, today, has provided recreational and educational facili- ties to the entire citizenship of Wayne County. It has a spacious auditorium and gymnasium where school athletics and dramatics from every section of the state are staged. It also contains a spacious heated swimming pool with a special direc- tor in charge. Our Associated Chari- ties, Boy and Girl Scouts, American

Hospitals-Goldsboro has two pub- lic hospitals, one of which is financed and operated by the City of Golds- boro and the County of Wayne, and the second being a branch of the State Orthopaedic Hospital. These schools provide, annually, edu- cational facilities for 5,021 children. 123 school teachers were employed for the year 1936. Our High School is one of the most modern and well equipped buildings of learning . in North Carolina. It has a modern stage, with adequate stage scenery, dress- ing rooms, and every equipment needed to stage dramatic and educa- tional programs. Our school system includes in its activities, athletics of every nature, including basket-ball, foot-ball and base-ball.
Our primary and grammar schools are located in various sections of the city, where they are most convenient to the students attending them.
While the State of North Carolina provides an 8 months school term, our city has just held an election for a special school supplement which will provide the children of Golds- boro with a 9 months school term. GENERAL REVIEW
Goldsboro is the county seat of Wayne County, one of the leading manufacturing a n d agricultural counties of North Carolina. It is the home of thirty well-established man- ufacturing plants. The agricultural resources are practically unlimited, and Wayne County produces, annual- ly, an average of thirty thousand bales of cotton, fifteen million pounds of tobacco, and tons of grain, hay and other food crops to say nothing of live stock and poultry. Goldsboro is the marketing center for these commodities, which makes it a pros- perous city and a desirable one in which to locate.
The population of Goldsboro in 1910 was 6,107; in 1920-11,296; in 1930-14,985, and today Goldsboro has 17,778 residents. The city is the shopping center of nearly 200,000 people residing within a radius of twenty-five miles.
Goldsboro, due to the nature of its surrounding territory, its geographi-
cal location and its unsurpassed fa- cilities, is rapidly developing into a commercial center. Recently several large manufacturing plants have lo- cated distributing branches here. Twenty-six passenger trains run to and from the city daily, which na- turally is advantageous to the com- mercial traveler doing business in eastern North Carolina.
Goldsboro was incorporated in 1847 with a population of 100 peo- ple. In the years that have elapsed since then, Goldsboro has pursued the even tenor of its way, and its citizens have been content to enjoy and prosper under its advantages until it has secured a foundation on which to create a citizenship that can withstand the storm of panics, short crops and the greed of politic- ians. In the building of this city to date, ideal citizenship has been kept constantly in mind, and with the greater duration there comes the charm of contact with a hospitable, democratic class of citizens whose ideals are based on character rather than bank account. Our city has given to our state and nation many prominent men. Goldsboro has sup- plied two governors of North Caro- lina, the first being Willis Brogden, and the second being Charles B. Ay- cock. Governor Aycock during his administration launched the great educational movement in North Car-

"THE GATE CITY OF EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA"
olina, which was responsible for the fact that, today, our state is one of the foremost educational states in the union. It is the home of many col- leges and universities that are at- tended, annually ,not only by stu- dents from every section of this state and nation, but by students from many foreign countries. Goldsboro has supplied the state of North Carolina with supreme court judges, superior court judges, some of the state's greatest educators and sever- al national cabinet members.
24Goldsboro has an ideal climate, be- ing the dividing line between the frigid climate of the North and the enervating climate of the tropics. Here are found nine months of sum- mer, with only three of autumn or winter temperature, none unpleas- ant.
Here one is within a daylight jour- ney of New York, Philadelphia, Bal- timore, Washington, Savannah, At- lanta and Jacksonville.
Here one is within a thirty-hour ride of Boston, Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, Buffalo, Cleveland, Cincin- nati, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, Memphis, New Orleans, Mobile and Palm Beach, embracing an area containing a population of over seventy million.
Here one is within a few hour's ride of the finest surf bathing on the Atlantic Coast on the beaches or Wrightsville, Morehead City and Beaufort; and here one can live in the warmth of a genial sun and yet be in touch with the life of the na- tion.
'Health conditions are ideal, the death rate averaging less than nine to a thousand. The city owns its splendid water system, furnishing at a minimum cost the purest of soft drinking water. Goldsboro has seven social and civic organizations working in harmony and for one special purpose, which is to build a city which meets the requirements of every class of people. Living con- ditions, from a health stand-point are beyond criticism and living con- ditions from a financial stand-point are within the means of all. Electric power, gas, telephone and water rates are equal to those of the aver- age city. Being located in an agri- cultural district, country produce is plentiful and reasonable in price. All roads leading into Goldsboro are hard-surfaced. Hotel facilities are ample. Board and room in private homes is available and modern apart- ment houses have been provided.
Wayne County ranks high in agri- culture. Here are grown hay, alfalfa,
14
GOLDSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA
field peas, cabbage, beets, beans, English peas, truck garden products, strawberries, dewberries, huckleber- ries, melons, peaches, plums, cher- ries, apples, pecans and numerous products of the soil. This is the land where three crops can be grown on the same soil during the year, and a land which, by reason if its free- dom from rocks, is easily and eco- nomically tilled. Here can be pro- duced from one acre of land, 1,500 pounds of tobacco, or 1,500 pounds of cotton.
Thirty years ago Goldsboro was a village of very few inhabitants. The soil, always unusually fertile, had scarcely begun to yield the wealth that is now pouring out in such abundance. The production of to- bacco, now a great industry, was then only being introduced in this section. The contrast between the Goldsboro of that day and 1936 is amazing. Population has greatly in- creased. Manufacturing industries employing hundreds of workers at a good scale of wages now occupy acres that were then open fields.
Today Goldsboro is an ideal loca- tion for factories. The diversified industries now here are in a flour- ishing condition, developing to a marked degree each year, and the combination of climate, location,
transportation, health, hospitality and other favorable conditions will produce a substantial and steady growth in population and wealth, justifying the judgment of investors and homeseekers who locate here.
Wayne County has good roads of great importance to the farmer and the motorist, and adding to the pleasure and convenience of all who reside in this section.
It is recognized today that the great South, with its amazing num- ber of undeveloped resources and possibilities of development, its sup- erior conditions for agricultural pro- duction, and its healthful and charm- ing climate, affords the best field of opportunity. The only debatable question is: Which Southern state and what location in that state offers the best combination of the particu- lar conditions one desires.
Wonderful is the South, and great beyond our dreams will be its fu- ture, but in all these Southern states there will be none to compare in the rapidity of its growth with the pre- eminently well-favored state of North Carolina.
Write or wire our organization for detailed information about Golds- boro.

"THE GATE CITY OF EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA"
WAYNE COUNTY
A section that offers attractive possibilities and opportunities to home-seekers, regardless of their trade or profession, Wayne County is located in the great agricultural section of North Carolina. While its major industry is agriculture, Goldsboro is the county seat and is th center of a great manufacturing section. Goldsboro, due to its trans- portation facilities, hydro-electric power, all-American white and col- ored, male and female labor and its access to numerous raw materials including lumber, clay, cotton and numerous farm commodities, ships its manufactured products consisting
