Independent and Progressive

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of this city directory and the world's largest independent publishers of city. directories, is in no way connected with any national association or directory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory sub- scriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.

The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used 30 years ago, the Baldwin organization has led the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.

Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concern- ing this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION

-

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1938 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.

We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued the advancement of the community. promptly and regularly.

CHARLESTON

ETTY DIRECTORY

1936

This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as origi- nated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the mod- ern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapting the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the pro- gressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.

SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK

The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:

1. The Miscellaneous Directory contains a great deal of useful in- formation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.

2. The Buyers' Guide, Civic Section and Professional Blue Book is made up of the advertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional card of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under head- ings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.

INTRODUCTION

3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.

4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.

5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents and distributors.

6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.

7. The Rural Routes Directory, which follows the Numerical Tele- phone Directory, is used constantly in reaching rural residents with adver- tising matter and other mail.

SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES

The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :

Number of dependents under sixteen;

Designation of home ownership.

Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.

Numerical Telephone Directory.

Nationally Advertised Brands.

In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beautifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.

THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT

After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the House- holders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "Amer- ica's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

BALDWIN DIRECTORY CO., Inc.

EXPLANATION

All people sixteen years or over are listed.

Wives are listed with husbands, the wife being shown in parenthesis as follows: Smith Robt. R (Mary L.)

The number of children under sixteen years is shown after the wife's name as follows: Smith Robt R (Mary L) 3.

The @, both in the resident directory and the householders' directory designates ownership of the home.

In case of a natural widow this fact is shown with the name of the deceased husband in parenthesis, whenever possible, as follows: Smith Mary L (wid Robt R).

The occupation and place of employment are shown as follows: Smith Robert R (Mary L) clk Hub Clothing Co.

The residence of each person is shown, "h" denoting a householder or head of the family, "r" denoting people in the home. Only one person at each home should be shown with the "h." Thus, a circular mailed to each householder will reach every home in the city.

Married women, engaged in some other occupation than housekeeping, are listed individually in additon to their regular listing with their husbands, as follows: Smith Mary L (Mrs Robt R) bkpr Henry Jones & Co r 210 Main.

Names in heavy type denote patrons of the directory and are usually the leading firms in each line of business.

Persons living outside the city limits and receiving mail in the country are marked RD.

The letters BD shown on some entries indicate Buyers Directory.

Colored is shown by a @. The publishers are very careful in using this, but do not assume any responsibility in case of error.

This directory contains all the regular departments of the modern city directory and many features used by no other publisher in the United States.

A numerical telephone directory will be found in the back of the directory listing each telephone according to number.

A Rural Route Directory will be found in back of this volume.

The classified business directory lists each firm according to line of business.

The numerical street directory lists each street alphabetically and each house according to number, with the street intersections as they appear. After each householders name will be found his telephone number. In case he has no telephone the nearest telephone may be found. The (11) denotes householders who own the house in which they live.

The buyers guide carries the printed messages of the city's leading business and professional firms arranged alphabetically according to classifications.

This directory shows the exact population of the city and environs at the present time.

Salisbury North Carolina

By MRS. G. F. CONRAD Secretary, Salisbury Chamber of Commerce

Salisbury, N. C., a modern Southern city, at the crossroads from the mountains to the sea and in the heart of the great industrial section of the South's most progressive State, a forward looking city with just enough of true Southern courtesy and tradition permeating its ideas and ideals to keep one reminded of the noble history of the past, and to urge one on to greater achievements- that's Salisbury, the capital of Rowan County, North Carolina and one of the most representative places in the entire district.

More than 17,500 people reside within its 5.19 square miles of in- corporated area, while the towns of Spencer and East Spencer, adjoining, place the urban population at approximately 28,000. The wholesale trad- ing area of 25 mile radius has a population of approximately 165,000.

HISTORY

Salisbury and Rowan County share in the earliest history of this progressive State, and it is a history that the descendants of the earliest settlers and the people of today may well be proud to tell the world about. The County was first settled in 1720 by Protestants from Moravia and a few years later, Scotch and Irish migrated here from their mother country. These were followed in 1745 by a steady flow of Germans.

The County of Rowan was established at the session of the general assembly of the province of North Carolina on March 27, 1753. The first court-the court of pleas and quarter sessions met in Rowan in 1735, the same year of the organization of the county. The first court house was erected in 1756 and old records dating back as far as 1750 are still on file in the office of the register of deeds. The deed for Salisbury township

10

SALISBURY

was granted February 11, 1775 and it is a point of interest to note that as early as 1777 Salisbury boasted of traffic laws.

Salisbury and Rowan County were especially active during the Revo- lutionary war and in 1871 Lord Cornwallis made temporary headquarters here. In the Spring of 1791, George Washington visited Salisbury.

Near Salisbury today stands the remains of one of the South's most outstanding relics-"The Old Stone House"-a large building constructed of native granite, built somewhat in the style of a fort, and occupied by Michael Braun, the forerunner of many of the Browns in the city today.

A national cemetery is located in Salisbury in which 11,700 Federal prisoners held by the Confederacy in prison nearby are buried.

"Boone's Cave" where the pioneer Daniel Boone sought refuge from the Indians is located north of the city near the Yadkin River and "Old Trading Ford" on the Yadkin River, established long before the declara- tion of independence is also north of the city.

Boyden High School

West of Salisbury, in the graveyard of the Old Third Creek Presby- terian Church is the modest grave of Marshall Ney, Napoleon's "right hand", who was supposed to have been executed for treason to Louis XVII of France but escaped through connivance with the firing squad and escaped to this country.

Andrew Jackson at one time President of the United States studied law in this city.

The mother of James K. Polk, eleventh President of the United States, was born and reared in Rowan County.

Mrs. Frances Christine Tiernan-Christian Reid, a writer of national reputation, was a native of Salisbury.

11

NORTH CAROLINA

GOVERNMENT

Since 1927 the city has operated under a City-Council Manager form of government. The Council is composed of five members elected at large. The Council elects a mayor from its own membership and appoints the City Manager, who is the administrative head of the City.

Salisbury has a municipal water system ample to supply pure water to care for the city's normal growth for many years; a modern sewer system and disposal plant, recently completed, costing $400,000; efficient police department equipped with every modern facility for the detection and prevention of crime. The fire department has long been a source of pride to the city, and through it's efficiency fire losses have been kept at an extremely low level. Salisbury and Rowan County has a well organized health department ranking among the best in the South.

INDUSTRIAL

. That Salisbury is a manufacturing city of importance is evidenced by the fact that there are approximately 50 diversified industries located in the city manufacturing a wide variety of products including combed yarns, wash dresses, hosiery, mattresses and cotton batting, rubber hose and rolls, draperies, colored cloth, shirting, lumber and its products, florist, supplies, brick, packing plant products, feeds, flour, cast iron products, paving blocks, building granite, veneers, fertilizers, refrigera- tion equipment, carbonated beverages and syrups, ice cream, butter and milk, bread, cakes, etc., and proprietary medicines.

Salisbury's industries manufacture products varying in value from a few cents to mausoleums made of Balfour pink granite quarried within the county with a value of more than $100,000.

AGRICULTURE

Salisbury is the trade center of a rich agricultural territory with important highways in every direction leading into the city. Sixty-five per cent of the farms are operated by owners which contributes to the prosperous rural farm life. Every important highway has high tension electric service bringing this convenience to a majority of farm owners and an active program is under way to extend this service. The County has exceptionally well balanced agriculture divided between cash crops, food and feed crops. Rowan County supplies a large volume of fruit, poultry and dairy products. Market facilities for these products are

provided in Salisbury and there is room for expansion in the production of poultry and dairy products.

DISTRIBUTION

Salisbury occupies a strategic position as a distributing center. The city is located in the most densely populated section of the State, having within a radius of 50 miles 626,000 people. In addition to the dense population the Spencer Transfer Sheds, the largest South of Philadelphia, are located at the Southern Railway's plant here where more than 350 employees handle the enormous volume of business coming into this point.

EDUCATIONAL

Salisbury's educational facilities are of the best and most modern. Four elementary white schools and one high school, all in up-to-date buildings and two schools for the colored are a part of the program.

The Boyden High School for white is one of the finest in the state having been constructed at a cost of more than half a million dollars, and is modern in every detail.

Other educational institutions located in Salisbury include Catawba College, a good educational institution for white with an "A" rating. This college was formally opened for work in September, 1925, and its program of expansion has gone forward at a rapid pace.

The Salisbury Business College provides for commercial and Secre- tarial training.

Livingston College, established in 1882 provides excellent educational advantages for the colored population of this section.

LIBRARY

The Rowan County Public Library, located in Salisbury, has exper- ienced a steady growth in recent years and under the guiding hand of a capable librarian this institution is rendering a great service to Salisbury and Rowan county. The library facilities are widely used.

CHURCHES AND HOSPITALS

Leading denominations are represented by 18 churches with a com- bined membership of more than 7,500.

The people of Salisbury and Rowan County also have the advantage of two excellently equipped hospitals. One of these hospitals participates in the Duke Endowment and as such offers many advantages not available elsewhere.

AIRPORT FACILITIES

Salisbury has a modern airport, equipped with all necessary service facilities, and with one of the largest hangars in the State. Terminal facilities are adequate to take care of the largest air-liners. Modern light- ing equipment has recently been installed so that the port will be in full service twenty-four hours per day. The airport is operated by the Salis- bury Municipal Airport Commission and every effort is being made to further improve air navigation facilities in this vicinity. The airport is easily accessible, being reached by hard surfaced road and within three miles of the main square of the city.

RADIO FACILITIES

At Salisbury is located one of the five State Highway Patrol Radio Stations. This station forms part of the Highway Patrol Radio system, covering the whole State. The City of Salisbury has a modern police

radio system with radio patrol cars equipped for two-way communication. This system results in an extremely economical and highly efficient organization for crime control. At' the present time, a commercial, regional broadcast station is being created. This broadcast facility. will provide an excellent advertising medium, with very high class programs.
