UR DIRECTORY is offered to the good people of the City of Charlotte in the full belief that, inasmuch as it is reliable and original, it will also prove acceptable. It contains the names of the people who, at this time "move and have their being" in the City of Charlotte. It is, therefore, neither a mortuary record nor an archœologieal archive. It is not a perfect Dircetory, because such a pro- duetion has never been known since Adam claimed a monopoly of the eensus ; but it is equal to all reasonable requirements, and is so immeasurably supe- rior to anything of the kind which has preceded it, that its advent need not be heralded by blare of trumpets, or words of praise from the Publishers!

A Directory is a work the most prone of all to errors, from the fact that information is received from all sources, and in niany cases given in a man- ner caleulated to mislead, but we believe the present volume will be found en- tirely free of errors that will in any way detract from the value of the book.

Considerable difficulty has been cneountered in our effort to obtain the ex- act number of the houses, as the time needed to place the number on every house will occupy much time, yet we elaim that there are but few errors. Many names are spelled in half a dozen different ways, and yet retain the same phonetic sense. This faet necessitates careful search, which we trust will be made in all cases of doubt.

To the citizens who have so kindly aided us we extend our grateful thanks, and must say that the larger majority received us cordially, and gave the information asked for cheerfully.

Our Book is completed, and to the citizens of Charlotte we confidently trust it, knowing that they will appreciate its merits and deal kindly with its faults.

Very respectfully,

CHARLOTTE CITY DIRECTORY CO.,

Publishers.
