Commonsense and Life Insurance

T () KEEP young Is something we all want to do. And it's mostly brought about by not thinking about it. You can't keep young if you are al- ways dwelling on those terrible things that may happen when you're young no longer. That's why some people save! Saving is fine. excellent, provided you can find out in advance that you are going to live long enough to make the saving worth. the stinting. It's a mean thing after you've done without your tobacco for a week, to hike into the sweet eternal. - What's to be done about it anyway? Easy! A life insur- ance policy means saving plus. No risk of falling into the long sleep with $14.75 at the bank. Not only is your life insured, but you are insured against your own inclination to shake the baby's bank, when you see a' "sure thing." Insure yourself and beassured. Don't let the wife and the kiddies run the risk of having not only lack of syrup; but : actually no cakes at all; „It simply means that you de- posit a part of your savings with an insurance company. instead of a bank,. PREFACE

CHARLOTTE, N. C.

"The Bright Spot on the Map"

CHARLOTTE

The past decade has been a period of marked growth and development in the City of Charlotte. During this time there has taken place here, a transfor mation, and what was at the beginning nothing but a good sized country town, has been so changed as to assume at this time something of the aspect of metropolitan life.

The United States Census has given Charlotte a population of 34,014, which indicates a growth of 88 per cent. during the ten year period. In point of popu- lation, Charlotte now leads all the Cities in the State of North Carolina.

As a natural sequence of the increase in population, a large number of buildings have been erected, the highest number which have been built in a single year being 814. Beside the large number of dwelling houses there has been added to the City a number of handsome buildings, which fill a need in the rapidly growing City, and not only better facilities in the transaction of business but which have contributed toward placing Charlotte as a City in a class by itself, so far as the two Carolinas are concerned.

Included in the list of these buildings are the Selwyn Hotel, Manufacturers' Club, Realty Building, Sanitorium, Young Men's Christian Association, Law Building, Auditorium, American Building and others.

The industrial life of the city has been greatly augmented by the addition of a long list of new factories of all sizes and the building of additions to sev- cral of those already in operation, whose business had outgrown their former quarters.

No more striking assurance of the growth of the City of Charlotte is in evidence than that of the steady advance in real estate. An advance in real estate is only made possible by an increase in the demand and the demand is only possible through additions to the population. In several instances prop- erty which recently has been transferred shows more than double the value of ten years ago.

The activity in the real estate market which has of late been so noticable provides an excellent index of what the year before us will produce in the building line. No more favorable indication for a good business has ever cx- isted at this season of the year.

In the year 1900 the Southern Bell Telephone Company had 689 subscrib- ers in Charlotte, the increase in the use of the telephone has kept pace with the growth in population and at the beginning of the year 1911, the number had reached 3544, with every prospect of a proportionate increase for the future,

The receipts of the Post-Office for the sale of stamps alone amounted to $50,194.42 in the year 1900. In ten years the receipts have increased to $146,- 443.27, or nearly three times what they were at the beginning of this period.

The banks of Charlotte in the year 1900 showed deposits amounting to $2,060,308. By January 1911 the total of deposits as shown by the annual state- ment has reached the sum of $6,103.158.

No single factor in the building of Charlotte has done so much toward bringing the people together into one homogeneous body than has the influence of the Building and Loan Associations. Approximately 5000 people are at the present time members of the four Associations in Charlotte and the savings of these people aggregate over one million of dollars per annum. Many people have been able to secure homes of their own through this agency, being patron- ized by all classes of people. There is no collateral which can be offered in Charlotte, having so high a loan value as the Building and Loan Stock. Gen- eral business is stimulated by these institutions, the building of a better class of houses is encouraged, and they have done much toward building a staple and permanent community.

Of the 780 cotton mills in the entire South, 500 lie in the two Carolinas and practically all of this number are within a hundred miles of Charlotte, thus making this place the center of the Southern cotton mill development. Thous ands of wage earning people are employed in these mills, and they represent the investment of millions of dollars of capital.

The development of the holdings of the Southern Power Company has (Continued on Page 13)

PREFACE Continued

been the greatest enterprise of the decade. This big concern with its head- quarters in Charlotte is distributing hydro electric power all over the two Carolinas, a distance of over 300 miles, with 1300 miles of transmission wires now in use and more in process of erection. Not content with, supplying all the factories in this territory with power, and lighting the various towns and cities, running the electric railways, etc .. this enterprising concern has laid plans for the building of an electric railroad which 'is to be built so as to carry both freight and passengers. Contracts for the first work have been let and in less than a year this place will be enjoying the benefit of an interurban electric railway service. There is no estimating the value through increased business. convenience and economy, which the new road will be the means of supplying. "The far famed graded stone roads of Mecklenburg County have proved to be one of the most important factors in the development here, and are rightly considered to occupy a first place in the economy of the people.Standing out as the pioneer of the good roads movement in this section of the country; hun- dreds of people have visited Charlotte for the express purpose of learning how the roads are built and of witnessing the building of them Beginning at first in a small way with crude apparatus and little experience the work has been Steadily pushed until today they have been extended in every direction and rad. iate through all parts of the county, measuring a total of 230 miles.

A wide awake organization of live wires of the City, known as The Greater Charlotte' Club is working for the upbuilding of the City and stands for a bet- ter and greater Charlotte, morally, educationally, commercially, and industrially Alive to the best interests of the City. this organization is continually and per sistently engaged in the work of making the advantages of Charlotte known to the world. Attracting to the City each year, a large number of visitors and making every legitimate endeavor to put Charlotte on the map. " The work that has been accomplished by the energies of the 600 oud members of this organization is in marked evidence to the visitor who chances to put foot on the streets of Charlotte. Everywhere the spirit of welcome to the stranger is made to be felt and/he is impressed by the pride which the people take in the city they call Home The people of Charlotte have been led to cultivate. the habit of sounding its praises both at home and abroad and through the efforts of The Greater Charlotte Club, they have become to an individual, an army of loyal boosters for Charlotte.

The careful observer finds no real reason why anybody should express surprise over the fact that Charlotteans possess such a pride in their beautiful City, for on every hand may be found striking examples of the natural beauty, the beautiful handiwork of man, and of the material development which is in progress, and which has so steadily gone on from year to year until now, the time has arrived, when this thriving community attracts the eyes of all who turn toward it with critical gazet dazzling the beholder as it stands out in glistening prominence the Bright Spot on the map of the good old State of North Carolina,

The foregoing article is written by one who is in a position to know where- of he speaks, There is no question, whatsoever. Charlotte is rapidly forging to the front. " Having outstripped her competitors, she is today the Metropolis of the Great, Piedmont Section. Before concluding we desire to thank all who have assisted in making this issue of the Directory a success. We desire also to call to the attention of our patrons that they will find a library of directories (including many important cities, ) in the office of ""The Greater Charlotte Club" -which is placed there for your use, and which we are continually enlarging from time to time .- Again thanking you, wo are

Yours very truly; -
