CHARLOTTE

PREFACE

We take pleasure in presenting to our patrons the seven- teenth volume of the Charlotte City Directory. It has been the aim of the publishers to make the Charlotte Directory a medium to display the progress the city is making in business and population. There is no publication connected with any city that so thoroughly exhibits the industrial, commercial and business proclivities as a city directory.

In the alphabetical list, names of all inhabitants 18 years or over are taken, giving the most reliable data for estimat- ing the population.

The Classified Department shows a complete exhibit of the various kinds of business and the extent to which it is represented.

The Miscellaneous Department represents the condition of the government, churches, societies, etc., and the Adver- tising Department, the energy and enterprise in the busi- ness circles.

In preparing this book, the publishers have spared neither time nor expense, and if errors occur, and any omis- sions made of individuals, you may rest assured it is no fault of the publishers. as it generally is the fault of the public, in failing to supply the required data, as every house is visited, and trained men ask the necessary questions, which with the co-operation of the public in general, go toward making a complete City Directory. The intentions of any reliable publisher are for improvement, and the public can always rely on getting as accurate a directory as circum- stances will permit.

Complete estimations in regard to a city's population are through necessity, enjoined upon the directory publish- ers, and sustained by the contents of the publication.

This volume contains 20,096 names of individuals : using the conservative multiple of 212 times to represent the names of married women and children not taken indicates a population of

50,240.

While this may not agree with the United States census it must be remembered that the directory convass is more thorough, and made by trained men, and is not confined to the city proper, but includes all the immediate suburbs, which are practically part of the city.

In conclusion we desire to thank the public in general for the courteous way in which all required information was given, and the business men in particular for their patronage, which makes a City Directory possible. This publication will be made annually as heretofore.

Yours Truly,

PIEDMONT DIRECTORY CO.
