CHARLOTTE
PREFACE
We take pleasure in presenting Volume XVIII of the Charlotte City Directory. Heretofore the Charlotte di- rectory has been published by the Piedmont Directory Co. The Commercial Service Co. is only an offspring of The Piedmont Directory Co., the business of the Pied- mont Directory Co. having grown to such an extent that a new company was organized to take over and handle part of the business heretofore handled by The Piedmont Directory Co., the main reason being to enable us to give the public better service. Both companies are under the same general management. The publishers, notwithstand- ing the discouraging outlook at the time they began work on this issue, did not endeavor to cheapen the publication in any way, but put forth every effort to produce a relia- ble directory, sparing neither time nor expense; and while some errors will no doubt occur, we know that we have produced a city directory far above the average. Some may knock our publication, for the knocker will ever exist. But the big majority of the users of the 1916 Charlotte Directory will give us the proper credit due. We say credit due, because we have issued a directory every year, under favorable and under adverse circumstances, we have put more emphasis on Service rendered to the public than on profit to ourselves. It is not every one who can - get up a reliable directory. The novice, as a rule, makes a complete failure of it, for no man can make a success of a business which he does not understand, and unless he has a well defined system and a competent force of em- ployees on which to depend. In concluding we desire to thank the business men who stood by us and gave us their support. as we have issued the only Charlotte directory.
