Hazing
During the last twenty (20) years as many as FIFTY (50) pupils in Northern Schools and Colleges and FOUR (4) in Southern Schools "and Colleges have been PUT TO DEATH by hazers, many more have been injured for life and the guilty parties have gone Scot free. HAZING is absolutely excluded from Bingham by our pledge of honor against it, as any patron or pupil of the School for the last three years will testify.
Our safety against FIRE and the absence of HAZING differentiate Bingham from any other Institution of Learning in the U. S. For Catalogue giving very full particulars, address 1.

PREFACE The Land of the Sky
We herewith present to the public Vol. VIII of the Asheville City Direc- tory. A glance through its pages, by even the most casual observer, with the fact that this is the third annual issue, should be conclusive proof to convince all that Asheville has outlived its life as a mere mountain village, famous on account of its superb location and the healthful, invigorating, salubrious cli mate; that no longer can it be re- garded as simply a summer and winter resort, dependent almost entirely upon the revenues derived from the great horde of tourists who yearly travel here, to and fro, from all parts of the globe.
The stage of infancy and childhood remain not with us long, the alert, ro- bust young man of today was a babe 21/2 decades ago, was a "babe in swad- dling clothes," dependent upon others for substance and life; but with each passing year the child grew. It soon became a man. So Asheville -- Asheville the village-in the same span of time has become Asheville, the commercial giant of Western North Carolina, and the pride of the Old North State.
Situated as few cities are, high up beyond the reach of all poisonous germs that are found in the low lands; up where the air is crisp and dry, where clouds and mountain peaks em- brace; where not long ago the eagle's scream was heard; where the sun ris- ing in all its glory, mounting barrier after barrier, sheds its brilliant rays into many an enchanting nook and cor- ner; where the evergreens cluster, and blooms the rhododendron; where the twilight softly fades away behind for- est hills and Balsam's highest peak as "the curfew tolls the knell of parting day;" where ever rippling rills from springs of water pure flow down the mountain sides, wending their way around cliffs, through gorge and vale, forming as they go mighty rivers on their way to the sea; where pictur- esque sites for handsome homes invite, and the scenic loveliness entrance. Nature has formed no more beautiful spot, so acknowledged by world-trav- eled persons.
To the north, to the south, to the east and to the west, on all sides, be- hold a tremendous territory, practical- ly undeveloped save for a few farming interests; yet, possessing unlimited op- portunities for future industries. With such advantages and with such envi- ronments, who dare say that the popu- lation of Asheville will not more than
double within the next decade and make the Queen city of the land of the sky the recognized leading muni- cipality of the state? Be this a con- servative statement, a mystic dream, or what it may, the fact remains that Asheville is growing and growing fast, and as citizens we have much for which to feel proud; for here --
"In the heart of the highlands are the modest homes we love;
Green stretch the dimpled glens below, blue rise the crests above,
By Swannanoa's water, where Zeh- leeka flows;
If we miss the royal lily, Hope still finds a rustic rose.
"No rugged Alps are ours, forever crowned with snow,
But on Appalachian summits the April violets blow,
And leafy leagues of woodland, ere May hath half outrun,
Shall hide our boldest brooklets from the searching of the sun.
"Under Elseetoss close nestles the nook I love the best;
'Tis there I reap but roses when Love's Litiny confessed,
And my heart shall never wander, and my feet would never stray,
From a little garden yonder in the Hills of Otteray."
Estimates of the population of a city is a matter necessarily enjoined upon the directory publisher. We are very much gratified at the figures which we herewith tender, which show a marked increase over our last issue and which are more accurate, as the number of names contained in this is- sue have not been estimated but were obtained by an actual count. The fig- ures represent all persons living or doing business within the city, as well as those living in the adjacent suburbs which help to make a city and in fact are a part of it. The book contains 11,552 names of individuals (wives, children and firm names being exclu- ded) using the conservative multiple 21/2 times gives a population of 28,880. (A great many Directory publishers use 3 and 31/2 times and a few as high as 4 times).
In concluding we desire to thank our patrons for their support and the public in general for so courteously giving us the desired information. As to who's who we refer you to the advertising pages.
