CONCORD

PREFACE

We herewith present our second issue of the Concord City Di- rectory. We have endeavored to produce a directory as free from errors as possible and we trust our efforts will be appreciated by the public in general. We shall continue to publish a directory of your city every two years until there is a demand for an annual book, and it shall be our aim to improve each succeeding issue.

The Directory is more than a mere list of residents, with their occupations and addresses, it is a complete and the most accurate guide to your city, your government, your institutions and other organizations. In other words, it is the history of your city. There is no other publication in the world gives the information as con- tained in the city directory, therefore there is probably no other publication of like nature in which all the people are so vitally in- terested.

To gather the data and compile a volume of this character, is no easy task. It requires time, system, patience and incurs no little expense. Very few people have any idea of the work it means to gather this data from the highway and hedges, and the tenacity it takes to finally shape it into a complete directory. A few errors made by a canvasser in getting names under adverse circumstances or a few typographical errors that often creep in, and some one is always on the lookout for such and ready to howl and it is generally the man who never needs a directory or gives a cent towards its support. It is he who prefers to use his neighbor's book instead of buying one. There are some directory publishers, so called, who do not know what it is to make an honest canvass for a directory, and they hurt the business, but their numbers are growing fewer every day and we long for the day when they will be entirely driven from the field. The Association of American Directory Publishers (of which we are members), are doing much to bring this day about, and to give the honest publisher a fair show.

The directory is one of the foremost enterprises of any city, and should receive the liberal support of all business men, for without such support it can not exist.

In conclusion we desire to thank our patrons for their support and the public in general for the courteous way in which they sup- plied our representative with the required data.
