DIRECTORY
OF THE
BUSINESS AND CITIZENS
OF
DURHAM CITY
FOR
1887.
Compiled by LEVI BRANSON.
RALEIGH, N. C. : LEVI BRANSON, PUBLISHER. 1887.
Copyrighted, 1887, by LEVI BRANSON.
FACTS ABOUT DURHAM.
1. Durham City has a population of 7,128, census cor- rected up to May 15, 1887. This includes the immediate suburbs, all virtually Durham.
2. The population six years ago was 2,100. Since then the increase has been more than three fold in Numbers, and still larger as to the Business of the city.
3. The city is unsurpassed in natural drainage. Main street runs on a ridge, dividing the corporation iuto North - east and South- west parts. From each side of this ridge at least four spring branches lead off, thus making the drain- age nearly perfect.
4. The corporation is one mile square, the depot being the centre.
5. The city is laid off into blocks of irregular sizes and shapes, no two blocks being the same size or shape. There are eight triangular blocks but no two alike. This entire irregularity of the plan makes it one of the most interesting cities on the globe, and shows that Durham city was not " made to order," but by order-real hard work of the citi- zens.
6. Gen. Joe Johnston surrendered the Confederate army near Durham, April 26, 1865, thus making the place for- ever historic
7. All the people of Durham work. There are no drones and but few criminals.
8. Ten churches and over two thousand church members indicate a city of decidedly religious bearing.
9. The city has a Board of Trade, Electric Lights, a Street Railway, Water Works, a Military Company, two Brass Bands a Market House and City Hall, two Parks, and many other things of public interest.
10 The place was incorporated in 1869, and in 1881 was inade the county seat of Durham county enacted that year. Since its incorporation the city has had a wonderful growth.
11. This is our first attempt at a full Directory for Dur- ham.
We design to continue the work regularly, and as often as demanded by the people.
Thanks for patronage bestowed.
Very truly, LEVI BRANSON.
June 1st, 1887.
WHY DURHAM HAS SUCCEEDED.
Julian S. Carr, W. T. Blackwell, W. Duke, E. J. Parrish, John L. Markham, John S. Lockhart and others, though young men, are often spoken of as among the old citizens of Durham. These and many others of like spirit have stood shoulder to shoulder for Durham against all the outside world.
They have had it in mind to build a model city-a gem in the crown of the Old North State.
They have succeeded, and now the loafers spend their time in guessing why.
It is an open secret. The leaders in Durham have been men of very remarkable business capacity.
They have shown pluck and vim seldom equaled.
First, they know the value of undeveloped labor, and they know how to develop it so as to build the city. They in- duce thousands of poor people, as well as the rich, to settle in the city. They are set to work and well paid, while su- perior business skill rapidly turns the product of this labor into cash. This is strictly business ; but some general principles must be adopted to build up a great community.
The leaders are for Durham and they work to the same end.
The association spirit is highly developed. The citizens are very much like one family. They help each other and rejoice in each others' success.
Then they are not only a moral but a religious people. They are a sober people-hard workers are usually sober.
They build fine churches to honor God, and He honors them with success. They work, they pray, they wait, they honor each other-they honor the Master.
A happier people would be hard to find. May they ever live and prosper.
