PREFACE
(Written by J. K. DIXON, JR., Sec .- Treas.)
Gastonia Board of Trade
Gastonia's growth represents a period of from 1881 up to the present time. From a small flag station on the Southern Railway it has grown to be a city of over 10,000 people, including environs. It is located on the main line of the Southern Railway, almost on the South Carolina line, at the intersection of the Carol'na & North-Western Railway, and practically in the center of the textile belt of the Carolinas.
On January I, I911, Gastonia becomes the county seat of Gaston Coun- ty, succeeding Dallas, N. C., in th's honor, thus carrying out the wishes of the people of the County in a popular election held on August 5, 1909.
GASTONIA HAS-
Twelve textile corporations with a total capital zation of $3,000,000. op- erating sixteen plants, with 155,000 spindles and 2,500 looms, consum ng 40,000 bales of cotton annually, and with a total yearly payroll of $600,000.
Its own electric light, water and sewerage systems.
Bitulithic street paving and cement sidewalks in main business section.
Exceptionally good graded schools, with newly erected school auditor- inm.
A public library.
Two semi-weekly newspapers.
Two new hospitals.
Three excellent banks.
A prosperous B. & L. Association.
Fire department.
Beautiful churches representing seven denominations.
Splendid system of c'ty and rural telephones.
Large sub-station of Southern Power Company, with practically unlim- ited power.
Free city delivery of mail.
Government appropriation of $65,000 for erection of postoffice building. Given franchise to a corporation for street railway system and internr- ban line to Charlotte, N. C .. to be built by July, 1910, grading of which has already been started.
Excellent climate and splendid health records.
The present officers of the town are: Thos. L. Craig, mayor: J. (. White, S. M. Morris, A. M. Dixon, J. H. Separk, Iro. O. Rankins. Aldermen ; Jno. R. Rankin, clerk; J. W. Carroll, chief of police.
The Gastonia Commercial Club combines the advantages of a social club and a board of trade, and is the organized agency for the upbuilding and advertisement of the town. Its present officers are: J. O. White, pres- ident: and J. K. Dixon, Jr., sec-treas.
With the immediate prospect of a street railway system, grading of which has already been started, and magnificent new courthouse and post- office. both to be erected at once. Gastonia's growth seems to be assured.
N. B .- Estimate of the population of a c'ty is a matter necessarily en- joined upon the directory publisher. The figures which we herewith ten- der are arrived at from careful calculation and can be taken as practically accurate. The book contains 4.210 names of individuals; using the conser- vative multiple 21/2 times, as is used by most directory publishers, to allow for children's and wives' names that are not counted, indicates a popula- tion of about 11.000, or to be more exact, 10,525.
In conclusion, we des're to thank the business men for their support. and the public in general for the courteous way in which they supplied us with the proper data.

North Carolina
The first attempt at colonization was made in 1548 by the illustrious Sir Walter Raleigh.
North Carolina was foremost to resist British tyranny. First p'tched battle fought at Alamance May 12, 1771. Declaration of Independence signed at Mecklenburg, 1776. North Carolina lost 35,124 soldiers during the Civil War, having furnished more and lost a greater number of sol- diers than any other Southern State. (Number from North Carolina, 125,000).
The population is of a singularly homogeneous character, being Vir- ginians, mainly English: Pennsylvanans, mainly Scotch-Irish and German: Scotch-Irish, Scotch Highlanders and Lowlanders, Swiss and French Huguenots. Population 2,000,000.
North Carolina's position is nearly between the parallels 34 degrees and 361/2 degrees north latitude, and between the meridians 751/2 degrees and 8.41/2 degrees west longitude. Extreme length 5031/4 miles; extreme breadth 1871/2 miles; average breadth 100 miles; area 52,286 square miles, of which 48,666 is land and 3,620 is water.
Mt. Mitchell, 6,711 feet high, is the highest peak of the Blue Ridge Range, being also the highest east of the Rocky Mountains. Forty-three peaks exceed 6,000 feet in height; eighty-two peaks exceed 5,000 feet in height. The mountain region embraces 6,000 square miles. The mount- tains are covered with deep rich soil and clothed with massive forests to their tops. The walnuts, poplars and oaks attain a size that would hardly be credited by one who had not seen them. All kinds of fruit attain a high state of perfection and all fruits and vegetables and grains are remarkably productive.
Average mean temperature, 59.6 from 1882 to 1897. Average snowfall for the same period, IT inches annually. Precipitation, 50.6. Wettest year on record, 1877; dryest year on record, 1897.
North Carolina is rapidly developing in all kinds of trucking and fruit- growing. At the recent National Apple Show at Spokane, Washington; North Carolina took first prize for the finest apples exhibited.
