INTRODUCTION

-

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city directory takes pleasure in presenting the 1940 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.

We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.

CHARLESTON South Cantlay WTY DIRECTORY 31930

This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as origi- nated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the mod- ern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapting the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the pro- gressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.

SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK

The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:

1. The Miscellaneous Directory contains a great deal of useful in- formation concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legislature, city and county officials.

2. The Buyers' Guide and Civic Section is made up of the advertise- ments of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional cords of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyer's Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.

INTRODUCTION

3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.

4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.

5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.

6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.

SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES

The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :

Number of dependents under sixteen;

Designation of home ownership;

Telephone Numbers on Street Guide;

Numerical Telephone Directory;

Nationally Advertised Brands.

In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beautifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.

THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT

After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the House- holders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "Amer- ica's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

Kannapolis

NORTH CAROLINA

BY T. H. WINGATE

Editor the Daily Independent, Kannapolis, N. C.

Still in its infancy, as cities go, Kannapolis is right now undergoing for-reaching changes designed to make it a model industrial town-a model in city planning, in housing and in civic beauty, as well as in tex- tile manufacturing excellence.

Home of the great Cannon Mills company, the world's largest manu- facturer of household textiles, Kannapolis already holds many unique distinctions but the program of progress already in full swing here is ex- pected to make it more outstanding than ever among the nation's indus- trial towns- especially textile centers.

TRADING AREA

To begin with, Kannapolis is the world's largest unincorporated town. That was established in the 1930 census and was reaffirmed in the 1940 count, which placed the population of "Kannapolis delimited unincorporated area" in excess of 20,000. (The official preliminary count had not been released by census authorities when this was written) .

This was a gain of 8,000 or more in that area alone and it does not tell half the story, since a great portion of the Towel City's actual popu- lation is in a "Greater Kannapolis" area.

The "delimited unincorporated" area includes a section approxi- mately ten square miles in size set up arbitrarily by the Federal census authorities to guide the local enumerators. That section of "Kannapolis proper," as outlined by the census bureau is roughly five miles long and varies from three miles to a half mile in width. "Greater Kannapolis," which includes thickly populated areas located within an approximate five-mile radius of the downtown business section, has a population of 26,492. This "Greater Kannapolis" area was included in the survey made for this directory. From that thickly populated area, plus some other sections of Rowan and Cabarrus counties, comes Kannapolis' trade.

Y. M. C. A.

Kannapolis is the home of the world's largest Young Men's Christian Association under one roof. Cannon Memorial Y.M.C.A. has a total of a

few more than 12,850 members now. Of this number 3,630 are members of the women's and girls' department and 9,220 are members of the men's and boys' departments.

In addition to this huge membership, the Y.M.C.A. is the center of most of the Towel City's community activities. Various independent or- ganizations, including church groups, merchants association, fraternal bodies, P .- T.A.'s, American Legion and others, meet there regularly. The YMCA has for the past several years sponsored a textile school that has enjoyed ever-increasing popularity and has furnished valuable instruction to hundreds of workers in Cannon Mills plants. It sponsors Hi-Y and Gray-Y clubs throughout the Kannapolis public school system that enroll

Cannon Memorial Y. M. C. A. Building

hundreds of boys and girls who are not included on the association's regular membership rolls.

The activities mentioned above were sponsored for both men and women even before the addition of a regular women's department with the construction of a new $500,000 building last year. This department is handled by a full-time director, who has recently been given the as- sistance of a full-time women's physical education director. Although in operation now for less than a year ,the women's department has already outgrown itself. Designed to handle a smaller membership, it now in- cludes over 3,600 members and is still growing. Women have assembly rooms, lobby, locker rooms, showers and kitchen of their own and the women's department has a separate entrance. In addition, the women have access to all facilities of the Y.M.C.A., including swimming pool and gymnasiums, Regular swimming and gymnasium classes are maintain- ed, as well as bowling during part of the year.

11

NORTH CAROLINA

The athletic department, always a big feature of Y. activities, was expanded greatly with the completion of the new building. It now has two complete gymnasiums. Handball courts have been added, along with a complete health department, and the swimming pool has been en- larged. The department also sponsors widespread outside activities, in- cluding softball.

The recreation room in the basement includes six bowling alleys of the best construction and twelve billiard tables. The building also houses a barber shop, which is operated through the YMCA.

Another big activity carried on by Cannon Memorial Y.M.C.A. is among boys and the new building houses a complete boys department. This includes a large lobby, plus a play room and a number of assembly rooms, each of which are adjacent to a master kitchen from which meals are served for some meetings. The department is under the direction of a full time director, with several assistants. In addition to their own department, the boys have access to the swimming pool, the gym- nasiums and the handball courts. They have locker rooms and shower rooms of their own.

Three kitchens-one "master" kitchen and two smaller ones-fur- nish facilities for serving 1,500 persons simultaneously, officials esti- mate. The need for serving that large a crowd has not yet arisen but one of the early events heid in the new building was a banquet for more than 800 veteran Cannon Mills employes. Banquets there at which 200 or more are served are not uncommon and more often than not the kitchen force is called on to serve meals for two or more groups meeting simultaneously.

Outstanding in Carolinas and Southern Y. circles as well as in its local sphere, Cannon Memorial Y. M. C. A. is each year host to one of the semi-annual meetings of the Carolmas Y.M.C.A. council and is looked upon as a leader by other associations in this area.

The Carolinas older boys conference was held here recently. T. C. McKnight, head of the local boys department, is also head of the South- ern boys work secretaries' association and some of the activities car- ried on by the local association, especially in the boys department, has come in for nation-wide attention. Kannapolis Y volleyball teams are consistent Southern championship winners and Kannapolis Y-sposored softball teams have won state championships.

SCHOOLS

Kannapolis has a separate school administrative unit and a nine- months school term. The state provides for an eight-months term and Cannon Mills company provides funds for the additional month each session.

Cannon Mills also helped in the addition of a business course in the high school and is otherwise co-operative with the schools. A new de- partment being added for the 1940-41 term is instruction in diversified occupations. This is for the especial benefit of youngsters who will not attend college after they complete their high school work and is in line

with the school administration's announced policy of fitting the course of study to the particular needs of this community.

There are six white schools and one colored school in the Kan- napolis system. These had a combined enrollment of 4,802 for the 1939-40 term and a staff of 128 teachers, exclusive of the superintendent. Of these students,, 4,227 were white and 575 were colored. The teaching staff includes 111 white teachers and 17 colored teachers.

By schools, the enrollment and number of teachers follows: (The number of teachers in each case includes the principal.)

J. W. Cannon high-1,098 pupils, 32 teachers. (This figure in- cludes 88 elementary grade students moved to the high school building because of crowded conditions in other schools.) The high school grades are from eight through 11.

Aycock-817 pupils, 20 teachers.

Centerview-136 pupils, four teachers.

Jackson Park-520 pupils, 14 teachers.

McIver-820 Pupils, 20 teachers.

Woodrow Wilson-836 pupils, 21 teachers.

Colored high school-125 pupils, 5 teachers.

Colored elementary-450 pupils, 12 teachers.

Office of the city school superintendent is in the McIver school building.

CHURCHES

Twenty-five churches of ten denominations are located within the Greater Kannapolis area. Churches here have sped expansion within the past five years. Many of them have made additions to present structures or have constructed entirely new buildings in new locations. Some of this construction is still underway. Church membership now is thought to be more than one-third of the total population. Methodists and Bap- tists are strongest here numerically, with Lutherans and Presbyterians next.

Activities of most of the churches are co-ordinated through the Kan- napolis Ministerial association, which meets monthly.

ORAGANIZATIONS

Main civic organizations in Kannapolis are the Lions and the Young Business Men's club. The Lions have a clubhouse on the edge of the city and they meet there at least once a month. Meetings are held on Wednesdays.

With possibly a larger membership than the Lions, the Young Busi- ness Men meet twice a month, on Tuesdays.

14

KANNAPOLIS

Five fraternal organizations are active here and at least one other fraternal group is in process of organization. The active lodges are :

Masons, who have just celebrated their 25th anniversary here.

Patriotic Order Sons of America, a growing camp and a leader in county P.O.S. of A. matters.

Improved Order of Red Men, growing rapidly and including many of the city's leaders in its membership.

Woodmen of the World, the largest single Woodmen camp in the state and the largest lodge in Kannapolis.

Odd Fellows, recently reorganized and now more active than ever.

Each of the above orders have sister organizations to which wives and daughters of members belong.

H

General Offices Cannon Mills Co.

The Knights of Pythias have just started organizing here.

The largest and most powerful woman's organization in Kannapolis is the Parent-Teacher Association, which claims more than 2,000 mem- bers in the city's six schools. Matching the P .- T.A. in energy if not in size is the Kannapolis Junior Woman's club.

The Little Theatre group in Kannapolis produces several plays each season and is gaining rapidly in popularity.

MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION

The Kannapolis Merchants Association now has a majority of Kan- napolis' 372 business houses in its membership. The office is affiliated with a national credit organization and is equipped to handle credit re- ports for local firms from all over the country, as well as local. A com- plete local report file is maintained. The office is staffed by the secre- tary, H. W. Owens, and two assistants.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

Kannapolis has 372 large and small business places, wholesale and retail, including service establishments. These are located in various parts of the Greater Kannapolis area, but are concentrated mostly in four more or less distinct business areas-the downtown section, Midway, North Kannapolis and Centerview. Annual retail sales are estimated at more than $4,500,000.

The town's main basic payroll is furnished by Cannon Mills com- pany, which normally employs 15,000 persons in its two Kannapolis plants (about 12,000 in Plant One and 3,000 in Plant Four) .

Situated on the Rowan-Cabarrus county line, with its population about evenly divided between the two counties, civic operations in Kan- napolis are nevertheless handled quite satisfactorily.

Cabarrus and Rowan counties each have full-time deputies stationed in Kannapolis-Rowan 3, Cabarrus 10. These deputies are under the direction of their respective sheriffs, although the Cabarrus county con- tingent is under the direct supervision of the Kannapolis chief of police.

The Rowan county group, which is under the direction of the Rowan sheriff, co-operates with the Kannapolis chief in most matters of city- wide concern.

The downtown police station building contains a court room, where regular sessions of Cabarrus county recorder's court are held under a special legislative act.

Kannapolis schools (one, Rowan and six Cabarrus) are included in the Kannapolis administrative unit. Each county allocates funds for its own schools and leaves administration to the Kannapolis school board, composed of five Cabarrus county citizens and one Rowan county citizen.

Cannon Mills company maintains street cleaning service and bar- bage collection service. Streets, being part of the county-state road system, are maintained by the state highway commission.

PUBLIC UTILITIES

Electric power comes to Kannapolis through Duke Power company lines. Telephone service is provided by the Concord Telephone company.

Southern railway provides passenger and freight service, the South- ern's main line passing through the City of Towels. Carolina Coach company provides bus service at short intervals.

The town is located on U.S. Highway 29, the through route from Washington to Miami. Alternate Highway 29-a more direct route for Salisbury-Charlotte traffic-passes a miles east of the downtown busi- ness section.

HISTORY

Begun in 1907 with the construction of the first mill by James W. Cannon, Kannapolis has grown with the Cannon Mills company ever since. First a few homes to house the handful of workers who operated

16

that first mill, then a store, Kannapolis grew as the genius of the late James W. Cannon guided the Cannon Mills company to success.
