Preface to Directory
Furnished by John C. Forester, Secretary Greensboro Chamber of Commerce
Greensboro is the second city of the State in point of population, is showing more rapid growth than any other City in the State and at the next census will doubtless be the undisputed metropolis of North Carolina.
In order to get a correct idea of the size and growth of the six leading cities in the State it is necessary to ignore the census figures for the cities proper and consider the figures for the townships in which they are located, because in most cases there is a large number of people living im- mediately outside the city limits which are not included in the figures given for the cities named. The township figures follow :

No two townships in any county in the State show equal increase in number or per cent.
Greensboro is located 288 miles southwest of Washington D. C., on the main line of the Southern Railway in the center of a territory more than 350 miles square in which there are more than three million people with no city of 40,000. This territory is rich in natural resources which will surely develop a truly great city, and Greensboro, because of its geographical location, its transportation facilities and progressive citizenship is the logical and cer- tain location of that city.
10
GREENSBORO offers really exceptional opportunities for every branch of productive endeavor, its present in- dustries are many and varied, and there is boundless op- portunity for many more.
GREENSBORO'S steady, consistent and rapid growth makes real estate investment either improved or unim- proved both safe and profitable.
GREENSBORO is an ideal home city, delightful cli- mate, sunshine almost daily with no extremes of tempera- ture; during a fifteen-year period the highest ranged be- tween 74 in December and 101 in July, August and Septem- ber; the lowest ranged between three below in February and 54 in July. Earliest killing frost October 11th, average October 25th, latest killing frost April, 18th average April 7th. Average precipitation, annual 47.59 inches ranging from 2.67 in November to 5.34 in August. Both City and surrounding country are quite rolling and magnificently wooded, giving from various points of vantage glimpses of landscape which for attractiveness can hardly be excelled Located about midway between the seacoast and moun- tains, the delights of either are easily accessible while every day life escapes the rigors of each. Merchants and professional men compare favorably with any city of similar size. Educational facilities are second to none and superior to many, while our people are composed of a greater per centage of pure anglo-saxons than can be found elsewhere.
