Population-Size-Greensboro city population for 1923 special government census was 43,525. Estimated population 1924, 48,500. Size, 16.9 square miles.


Greensboro is the center and metropolis of a large territory which is being rapidly developed; in which it is the largest city. In the Greensboro territory are located a number of prosperous rapidly de- veloping smaller cities and towns.

There is located in Greensboro the N. C. College for Women, the Greensboro College (Methodist) for Women, and near Greensboro is Guilford (Friends) College, Oak Ridge Institute, and the following colored colleges: N. C. Agricul- tural and Technical College, Bennett College, Immanuel Lutheran College, and the Sedalia School.


Government-Greensboro is governed by the City Manager form of government. Prominent and successful business men serve on the Council.

Roads and Streets-Greensboro has 72 miles of paved streets. Fifteen miles of electric street railway. Greensboro has more hard surface roads leading into it than any other city in the State. The National Dixie, Bankhead and Central through highways, and other improved roads pass through Greensboro.


Public Library-Greensboro has a Public Library of 21,300 vol- umes.


Churches, etc .- Greensboro has churches of practically all de- nominations, a Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A.


Chamber of Commerce-Greensboro Chamber of Commerce is representative of the commercial, industrial and civic life of the community, functioning through seven active bureaus.


Clubs-Greensboro has a Country Club, Elks' Club and Mer- chants' and Manufacturers' Club.


Organizations-Greensboro has a live retail merchant organiza- tion, Women's Club, Rotary, Kiwanis, Civitan and Lions Clubs as well as various other similar organizations.


Distributing Center-Greensboro is the logical location for branch plants and houses and district offices. About 1,500 traveling men live in Greensboro. Twenty-nine new branch houses and district offices were opened in 1924.

Greensboro is the home of the largest denim mill in the world, with an output of over two hundred and fifty thousand yards indigo denim daily. One of the large nurseries of the country is located in Greensboro. Greensboro is rapidly develop- ing as a manufacturing center.
