INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., INC., publishers of the Greensboro City Di- rectory, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1928 edition of the Greensboro Directory.
Confidence in the growth of Greensboro, in its wealth, industry and population. as well as in the advancement of its municipal and social ac- tivities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for, truly, the directory is a mirror reflecting Greensboro to the world.
The enviable place occupied by HILL'S directories in offices, stores, libraries and homes, causes the publishers to forecast the belief that the Greensboro Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic in- formation of any and every kind pertaining to our city. With an un- rivaled organization, having the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user.
Population
The estimated population of Greensboro is 57,656, based on the number of individuals' names in the alphabetical section of the directory, with due allowance for children and for women whose names are not listed separately from those of their husbands. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the directory.
Four Major Departments
The several essential departments are arranged in the following order :- -
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 25 to 92, printed on tinted paper, con- tains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and profes- sional interests of Greensboro. These pages will be found particularly interesting and instructive to the substantial elements of the city. The advertisements have been carefully grouped by departments and are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best and, as such, merits a survey by all buyers keen to prime themselves on sources of supply. The city's ac- tivities, in many interesting phases, are authentically pictured to re- veal what it has in its show window. In an ambitious and progressive community like Greensboro, the necessity of having this kind of inform- ation immediately available, is very great and, frequently, pressing. Gen- eral appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal patronage the city directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms and corporation is included in pages 93 to 579. A feature of this section is the inclusion of the wife's name in parenthesis following that of the husband. Colored people are designated by the character "(c)".
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE AND DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS covers pages 581 to 724. In this section the names of the streets and avenues are arranged in alphabetical order; the resi- dences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders and business con- cerns are placed opposite the numbers.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 725 to 788. This department lists the various manufacturing, mercan- tile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epi- tome of the business interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between Buyer and Seller." As such is plays no

small part in the daily doings of the business world. "More goods are bought and sold through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium."
Municipal Publicity
The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information over the country, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, which are maintained in all the chief cities of the country. Here they are readily available for free public reference and serve as perpetual adver- tisements of Greensboro, for business men, the country over, realize that the city directory represents the community as it really is.
The Greensboro Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Greensboro City Di- rectory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Greens- boro Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This library is one of the system of more than 400, installed and oper- ated in the chief cities of the United States and Canada, under the su- pervision of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, of which Hill Directory Co., Inc., are members.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the patronage of those progressive business and professional men who have expressed their confidence in the city directory as an advertising medium, with assur- ance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
The Statue of General Nathaniel Greene at the Battleground of Guilford Court House.
Greensboro Today and Yesterday
Greensboro was incorporated in 1808 and the act of incorporation was the first sig- nificant event in her history, for there was only open country on the site until the county commissioners paid Ralph Gorrell $98 for 48 acres on which a new seat for Guilford county's capital was laid off, the court house in the center.
Before that time the county seat of Guil- ford, since the county was established in 1770, was at Martinsville, five miles to the north of Greensboro. The old court house site was the scene of the historic battle between the Continentals of General Na- thaniel Greene on one side and the British Red Coats of Lord Cornwallis on the other. The new county seat was named in honor of the great American military leader.
Even in those early days Greensboro's central position in the state was the chief factor in her growth and it remains so until today. Here the main highways of the young state converged on the tiny vil- lage which sprang up around the crossroads and as the state grew stronger so Greens- boro grew. Its history was uneventful for long years. The first railroad came in 1856 and a second in Civil war days. Greensboro had only a few thousand people but she gave her share of mon and supplies to the southern cause and she felt in full the exhausting poverty in men and re- sources which killed all chance for growth in the days of reconstruction.
It was genuine reconstruction, however, and there was the gradual accumulation of a reserve of new power. The opening of a new century found the city ready for its flowering. In the '90s came the Cones and after them the other industrial and busi- ness leaders which have transformed the trading settlement into the modern city. Greensboro remains the most centrally lo- cated city in North Carolina and that posi- tion is a dominant influence on her manu- facture as well as her trade. Her destiny has always been peculiarly that of the state and North Carolina's amazing advances of recent years have been directly reflected in Greensboro. She is the meeting point for people, for raw materials, for communi- cation and for finished products.
Other factors are playing powerfully for her advancement. Her back-country is a region of rich and diversified agriculture and one which is rapidly showing further improvement. The entire region is thickly dotted with industrial communities which look to Greensboro as the central point for supplies and materials. Raw materials essential in major lines of manufacture are at her doors, cotton, hardwoods, clay pro- ducts, stone, wood pulp and the like. Native-born labor, intelligent, loyal and easily trained is present in abundance. Electric power at reasonable rates and in any desired amount is to be had. One of the chief factors is a progressive city and county government with a friendly attitude and a fair one. Climatic conditions are as advantageous as can be found in the entire country. Neither excessive winter cold nor summer heat is experienced and the year- round a pleasing, equable weather is ex- perienced. The average temperature is 59 degrees Fahrenheit, the average rainfall 46 inches.
Greensboro lies at the center of the north section of the Piedmont, that great new kingdom of industry and business which runs through the middle of the South At- lantic states. She lies equally distant from New York and Atlanta, about 12 hours by train from each. She lies equally distant from the ocean on the east and the Caro- lina mountain border on the west.
Pivot of the Piedmont
Greensboro, "The Gate City" of the Pied- mont in other years is now "The Pivot of the Piedmont", a focal point for the north- ern part of that great new kingdom of in- dustry, commerce and agriculture. Accep- ting the title in all due modesty, the city is seeking to offer its very best facilities in the public service owed by her on account of her unique position. A review of her service institutions reveals them to be the equal of any in the country.
The city water department has an average daily pump of around 4,000,000 gallons, this coming from a billion-gallon reserve on Reedy Fork creek and coming through a completely modernized plant from pumping station to water meter. Recent installations afford a maximum daily pumping capacity

of 28,000,000. This reserve strength to- gether with a splendid fire department, affords the last word in fire protection. The quality of water supply and fire protection was the chief factor in the city's securing last year lowered fire insurance rates and also in her winning the national fire waste prize for cities from 50,000 to 100,000 popu- lation, as awarded by the U. S. Chamber of Commerce.
Electric light and power current and gas are supplied by the North Carolina Public " Service Company, owned by the Duke in- terests. They also operate the street rail- way lines on 16 miles of track. The city is on a direct line of the Southern Power Company, owned by the Duke interests.
