History of Hickory, N. C.
HISTORICAL
" Hickory Tavern" was the ante bellum name by which Hickory was known many years after the war. Hickory Tavern was a eabin built of logs about fifty years ago, in the midst of a dense virgin forest of large hickory, oak and chestnut trees. A large hickory tree stood in front of the tavern, from which it derived its name.
Through this forest and by Hickory Tavern ran the old stage-coach line, and here a pause was made to change horses and feed "man and beast" as the sign over the door read. This Tavern stood on the site where the new Hotel Huffry is being erected.
The settlement was composed largely of "Pennsylvania Duteh" afterwards "Catawba Duteh," from Catawba County in which it is located, but in reality they were pure German or of that origin, who settled first in Ger- mantown, Pennsylvania and vieinity.
Catawba County, of which Hickory is the chief town, derived its name from the tribe of Indians which for- merly occupied the district. These Indians were seen and remembered by an old resident, Rebecca Barger, who recently died at the age of over 100 years. She also remembered seeing wild animals in abundance such as wolves, bears, deer, etc., along the Ca- tawba River three miles distant from Hickory.
Catawba County was originally a part of Iredell County. It has con- tributed largely to the interesting his- tory of this country. in matters of he- roes and patriotism during both the Revolutionary and Civil wars.
LOCATION, CLIMATE, HEALTH, NATURAL ADVANTAGES
Located in the very heart of the Piedmont seetion, Hickory enjoys the distinction of being the gateway to the mountains of the famous Western North Carolina health-resort section; approaching from the Atlantic slope, to the west, on the Southern Railway, is Asheville, 83 miles distant; to the east, Charlotte, an equal distance: to the north, Blowing Rock, 40 miles, reached by the C. & N. W. Railway to Lenoir and thenee by stage-coach over a splendid turnpike.
With an altitude of 1,146 ft. and a elimate that is ideal, pure water, per- feet sewerage system, electric lights, many manufacturing plants, two rail- roads, adequate banking houses, excel- lent public and private schools and three large colleges. Hickory can well boast of being the most healthful and progressive eity of its size in the State. Indeed Hickory is the one place in the State which can truly elaim "eli- mate cure" for many health-seekers who have come here suffering espe- cially with weak Inngs-and that without the aid of sanitorium treat- ment. The climate is somild and con- ditions so favorable that such suffer- ers sleep "in the open" with impun- ity at any and all times of the year.
Hickory's population, including the suburbs of West Hickory, Long View, Highland Brookford. is conservative- lv estimated at 15.000. It has inereas- ed 36 per cent during the past six years.
Situated in the midst of a progres sive farming country. which is fast developing into profitable truek-farm-
ing, Hickory has the advantage of an inexhaustible vegetable and produce supply fresh from the producer. Fruit is grown nearby in large quantities, while cattle and sheep raised in the adjoining mountains furnish the most delicious meats.
COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL SURROUNDINGS
With such conditions and natural advantages we have already won the reputation of having the finest health resort in North Carolina. And with the advent of cheap and ample hydro- electric power, which is already assur- ed and near at hand, Hickory is des- tined to be a manufacturing center. In faet the way is paved, numerous man- ufacturing enterprises of various kind being operated in and near Hickory to advantage and profit even with steam power.
Although no material advancements were made during the recent panic, our mills and manufactories continued to operate, and business in general, by reason of a substantial surrounding country and sound banking houses, held up remarkably well. Not a dol- lar of script was issued by Hickory banks, and conditions were such that confidence in the community was un- shaken, while even larger places ou every side were thrown into utter con- fusion.
The outlook for the present year is very promising. Leaving all other considerations ont, Hickory is bound to grow, because the country around it is being rapidly developed. The question of good roads is receiving consideration, farming is being con- dneted along scientific lines and the farmer is awakening to the possibili- ties of truck-farming and diversified crops.
Being the center of the Piedmont section, with a health record unsur-
passed, a climate that is just right, good railroad facilities and abundant cheap labor, it is the ambition and sensible determination of our progres- sive citizens to make Hickory a mecca for manufacturers.

Among other new enterprises and subjects receiving the attention of the Hickory Chamber of Commerce, most of which it is reasonably certain of securing during the year 1909 are: Tubercular Sanitorium.

Structural Iron Manufactory.
Y. M. C. A. Building.
Convention Hall.
Postal Telegraph.
Wireless Telegraph Station.
Meeting of Commercial Secretaries of the Carolinas.
Meeting of Western North Carolina Methodist Episcopal Conference.
Many other manufacturing plants will be established here upon the in- troduction fo cheap power by which many more will be induced.
FINALLY
Lumber and building material are cheap and plentiful. Large quantities of timber may be secured nearby. Manufacturing sites accessible to the railroads may be seenred for a reason- able consideration.
Hickory, in short, is in the saddle and another year will mark the most important epoch of her commercial and industrial history. Outside eapi- tal and men with brains and public spirit are invited to investigate, with a view of locating here and enjoying the many natural advantages with which we are blessed.
