PREFACE
A Volume in Small Compass Regarding
High Point, N. C. .
Location-The name "High Point" ap- parently refers to a mountain town. But not so. High Point although nearly I .- 000 feet above the sea level. is free from the disadvantages of the mountain steeps, the nearest spur of the Blue Ridge being forty miles distant. When the first surveyors of the old North Carolina, now the main line of the Southern Rail- way. came to the spot where now stands a wide awake city, they found it to be the highest point on the lines of survey. hence the name, High Point.
Climate The climate is all that can be desired. The winters are mild. the sum- mers delightful, the mountains in the dis- tance, just far enough away to escape all the rigors of a winter day, yet near enough to enjoy the pure crisp air and the cooling summer breezes, the geo- graphical situation alone makes High Point an ideal summer or winter resort. But this has not made High Point. High Point does not claim to be a great resort town, her people have reached out after other and more permanent means of growth. "High Point makes Furniture. and Furniture has made High Point." Second only to Grand Rapids in the quantity of furniture produced from its factories, this little Carolina town has a story that is none the less romantic be- cause it happens to be all business.
Growth -- It is not an unusual thing for a mining town to grow up in a single night: towns have been boomed from various causes, extended their borders and increased their population with re- markable rapidity, but the majority of such die almost in their birth. But not so with towns which are built by the push and industry of its citizens. High Point belongs to this class, with the push and energy of a pioneer hewing his way through dense forests to fertile valleys beyond; the men of High Point as a unit, shoulder to the wheel, have pushed for- ward to a great industrial accomplish- ment and the same internal forces which began its progress still operate, pressing on, to an ever-accumulating success. It may be said that High Point grew with the haste of the mushroom, but it also grew with the strength of the oak. The town was founded in 1857; in thirty years it grew to have a thousand people: since 1903 it has grown into a city of 12,000. Its population has increased over one hundred per cent, its property values have exceeded one hundred per cent. For the past several years High Point has made the remarkable record of building a house for every day in the year, notwith- standing the depression in some locali- ties.
LLSHIP
Homes-Remarkable as this may seem, yet still more remarkable is it when it j, known that more people in High Point own their homes than any other city in the United States, according to its popu- lațion.
Opportunity-There is probably no place in this country where a man of energy can be as sure of a good business as in High Point. The achievements of the people already there are the best in- dications of the opportunities of those who come. There are eighty manufac- turing plants within the city, the large majority of which are owned or con- trolled by home capital. The opportunity in the city's chosen line is unlimited, the manufacture of wooden products, from tooth-picks to street cars. It has the advantages for cotton mills which have made the Piedmont region the industrial workshop of the South.
Merchants-A word about the mer- chants of High Point. Within the last three years many fine stores have been added to the already long list. Today the purchaser of almost any line can find what he wants in High Point, and the men and women who conduct these stores are of well established reputation and business integrity.
In closing, we may add that High Point has admirable banking facilities, paved streets, municipal Ownership of water and electric light plants, schools that are the pride of the city and beautiful churches, well attended, that go to show the high moral and religious environ- ment. Is it any wonder then that the High Pointer is a natural born "booster?" Fired with the enthusiasm of past suc- cess, he sees no declining star and all is well.
N. B .- Estimate of the population of a city is a matter necessarily enjoined upon the directory publisher. The figures which we herewith tender are arrived at from careful calculation and can be taken as practically accurate. The book con- tains 4.710 names of individuals: using the multiple 21/2 times, as is used by most directory publishers, to allow for children's and wives' names that are not counted, indicates a population of about 12,000, or to be more exact, 11.775.
In conclusion, we desire to thank the business men for their support, and the public in general for the courteous way in which they supplied us with the proper data.
PIEDMONT DIRECTORY CO. (Inc.), E. H. Miller, Mngr.
