PREFACE

POPULATION, 15,000.

T HE NAME OF HIGH POINT is almost as well known throughout the country as the name of the President of the United States. This is a strong assertion but is true in a large measure. Steadily has High Point grown from a little hamlet after the Civil War until now it is a prosperous city of 15,000 inhabitants and the second largest furniture manufacturing city in the United States.

The name of High Point was given this beautiful little city by a corps of engineers who were surveying the old North Carolina railroad. They were struck with its high altitude, and the name "High Point" was the nat- ural outcome.

The town got its start, its reputation through the furniture factory. Twenty years ago this business was started here on a small scale. In a year or so others followed, and so on, until now hundreds and thousands of cars of furniture and other wares go out of this city annually to the markets of the world. There are near four score factories here manufacturing almost everything from the cradle to the grave.

One of the most important lines of business and one that has been the means of advancing High Point in a large measure is its mercantile and business houses. No where can one find a livelier and more up-to-date set of business men than in High Point. Here any thing needed in the home, or for the body, inwardly or outwardly, can be found. Dry goods, notions, ladies' furnishings, shoes, clothing, millinery, hardware, buggies, wagons, harness, furniture, groceries, drugs, etc., can be purchased at very reason- able prices at wholesale or retail. And the raiser of produce or anything from the garden or farm, will be bought at the markets at all times at the highest price.

The merchants endeavor at all times to keep abreast of the times and offer the best wares from the markets of the world.

The wholesale district is an important factor in the business life of High Point and the annual amount in dollars and cents transacted by these concerns is about $2,000,000.

There are five banks, one National bank and four state banks, doing, a large annual business. All of them are safe and strong and offer the best accommodation possible consistent with good banking. Interest is paid on time deposits and the small savings are taken care of as well as the large ones.

The city owns its water and sewerage plant and electric light system and all are now on a paying basis. These plants are valued at over $150,000.

Other interesting facts are:

High Point is in the heart of the Piedmont section.

Elevation above the sea level 964 feet.

Located on the main line of the Southern railway.

Terminus of the High Point. Asheboro and Aberdeen railroad.

Trolley system connecting High Point with Greensboro, Winston and Thomasville an assured enterprise.

Twenty-four passenger trains arrive and depart daily.

It has four public school buildings.

Eighteen churches.

Fifty stores.

One hundred and twenty-one corporations.

Tax rate per $1,000, $1.33 1-3.

Twenty miles of granolithic sidewalks and thirty miles of macadam county roads in township.

Seventy-five manufacturing plants, doing an annual business of $5,000.000.

Eight large jobbing houses doing an annual business of $2,000,000.

Three modern hotels.

In the midst of a fine trucking, dairying and poultry section.

In a county noted for good roads and fine farms.

Every man has his shoulder to the wheel for a greater High Point and it is no fancy dream to say that within the next to years the population will be double what it is to-day and that the annual business done by the many interests here will be three times what it is at the present.

Ifigh Point of to-day has bright prospects and every loyal citizen feels like the future has in store much for this beautiful little city that stands not only high in altitude but high on the bed rock of success and prosperity.
