PREFACE

INDICATIVE BAROMETERS OF BUSINESS, SHOWING TIIE IMPORTANT RELATIVE POSITION OF GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA, AS A COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL CITY

THE STATE

North Carolina ranks fifth in the United States in the value of agricultural products and in the value of manufactured products is exceeded only by Missouri and Texas among seventeen Southern States. Its factory output in 1923, according to "Commerce and Industry," Volume 2, No. 8, published by the University of North Carolina Extension Division, was $951,910,000.00 from 2,602 plants. (79% of this production is in the Piedmont section.)

"Federal tax collections in North Carolina (year ending June 30th, 1924), were $7,694,082 IN EXCESS of the total collections of Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi." (Statement of United States Commissioner of Internal Revenue.) These barometers indicate the importance of North Carolina as a progressive State.

THE PIEDMONT PLATEAU

Seventy-nine per cent of all the industrial establishments of North Carolina are located on the bench-land which extends from the foot of the Appalachian Mountains to the eastern coastal plain, known as the Piedmont Plateau. About the same relative percentage (79) obtains with regard to commercial, civie, and financial establishments which the demands of industry have made necessary. About $700,000,000 worth of manufactured goods are produced annually in this area, according to 1920 eensus report on manufacturers (Vol. X) and approximately $198,- 000,000 worth of domestic merchandise was distributed and consumed in 1925 within fifty miles of Greensboro. Various economie factors combined to aceount for this remarkable concentration of commerce and industry.

THE CITY OF GREENSBORO

The city of Greensboro is the county seat of Guilford County and is situated in the very heart of the Piedmont Plateau industrial area .- "The Pivot of the Piedmont." It is only an overnight ride in the train from New York (6:40 P. M. to 8:30 A. M.)
