INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories, (publishers of the Albemarle Directory since 1951), present to subscribers and the general public, this the 1964 edition of the Albemarle City Directory, which also in- cludes Badin, Eastwood Park, Weselyan Heights and Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Albemarle's industry, popula- tion and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Albe- marle to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Albemarle Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presenta- tion of their products or services. Following this is the Classi- fied Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the at- tention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Albemarle, the necessity of having this kind of information up- to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Di- rectory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the com- mercial, industrial and professional world.

86869

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Albemarle, and the

viii

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the resi- dences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the household- ers and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points, on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to of- fer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a port, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpet- ual and reliable advertisements of Albemarle and vicinity.

The Albemarle Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Albemarle City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offi- ces of the Albemarle & Stanly County Chamber of Commerce, Inc., for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by mem- bers of the Association of North American Directory Publish- ers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an ad- vertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commen- surate return.

Location

Albemarle, the county seat of Stanly County, is located in the south central portion of the State in the gently rolling hills of the ancient Uwharrie Mountain Range of Piedmont North Carolina. The city is 42 miles northeast of Charlotte, 115 miles southwest of Raleigh, 22 miles east of Concord and 200 miles west of the North Carolina coast. It truly can be described as an area of "accessible isolation," being near large market areas and yet not hampered by large industrial areas threat- ening to smother it. There are six other incorporated commu- nities in the county and three unincorporated ones. The form- er includes Norwood, Aquadale, Oakboro, Stanfield, Richfield, and New London, while the latter includes Badin, Locust and Misenheimer.

Climate

The area enjoys a mild, healthful climate throughout the year, with an annual mean temperature of 60 degrees and an average yearly rainfall of 48 inches. The area has a growing season of approximately 200 days and is not subject to violent storms or other unusual weather conditions.

INTRODUCTION

History

The city, which was incorporated in 1847, was named for the Duke of Albemarle. The entire area is richly flavored with ro- mantic history of the early settlers (primarily English and French) and of Indian tribes which once roamed the ageless mountain ranges. At one time river traffic came within ten miles of Albemarle, up the Pee Dee River, but this long since has given way to the harnessing of river power for electricity. Albemarle played a major role in both the American Revolu- tion and the War Between the States. Skirmishes were report- ed in both wars, and a great deal of legend has been handed down generation-by-generation. There was a gold rush in the county during the 1860's, and at one time there were four mines in operation here.

People

Albemarle and Stanly County have had a steady rise in population during the past twenty years. This has been due to its strategic location, fertile soils and to its citizens who are its greatest asset. The people are cordial and friendly to new- comers, who become an integral part of civic, religious, and cultural life of the city. This community spirit of cooperation is reflected in the growth and progress of the past two decades.

Agriculture

Stanly County is one of the foremost agricultural centers of North Carolina and can boast many "firsts". It is the only exporter of small grain within the state. It is the leading coun- ty in lespedeza seed growing. For many years this county has supplied other areas with quality seed. Stanly County ranks high in the production of beef and dairy cattle, poultry prod- ucts, sheep and swine, and is a big producer of milo, corn and cotton. It has hundreds of acres of permanent pastures and hay crops. Tenant-farming is disappearing in this area due to the high fertility of the soil and the ability of the farmers to capita- lize on it.

Industrial Scene

XV

INTRODUCTION

Industry

Being in the heart of the industrial South, Albemarle and Stanly County offer many advantages to new industry. Native- born labor is quickly trained to reach high standards of pro- duction. Power, water and proximity of raw materials and market contribute to a strong and diversified economy. Prin- cipal Industries:

Aluminum Company of America-pig aluminum.

American & Efird Mills, Inc .- yarn.

Austin Knitting Mills-full-fashioned sweaters.

Collins & Aikman, Inc .- yarn, automotive floor mats and upholstery.

Knitster, Inc .- knit products.

Page Church Furniture Company-church furniture.

Stanly Knitting Mills-hosiery.

Wiscassett Mills Company-hosiery and yarn.

Other plants produce a variety of products including up- holstered furniture, clay and lightweight aggregate products, flour and feed, printed materials, metal and wood products, etc.

Commerce

Albemarle is the county's principal retail center and its stores offer the shopper a wide variety of reasonably priced merchandise to suit every taste and budget.

The First National Bank, the Cabarrus Bank & Trust Com- pany, the Security Bank & Trust Company and the Piedmont Bank & Trust Company, with combined resources of over $35,000,000, contribute to the county's healthy financial cli- mate. Also importantly serving the county are two progres- sive savings and loan associations: the Home Savings & Loan Association and the North Carolina Savings & Loan Associa- tion, with combined assets of over $27,000,000.

Government

Stanly County is governed by five commissioners who are elected for four year terms. In 1962 the City of Albemarle adopted the Council-Manager form of government. Thus it is governed by a mayor and five aldermen and is administered by a city manager. Each of the other cities in the county is gov- erned by a mayor and aldermen. In keeping with its early heritage, the county has traditionally been governed by the two-party system.

The city and county have modern fire and police protection, which is maintained at a high level of efficiency. Each city and town has its own fire department, and every other section of the county is covered by volunteer fire departments.
