INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1951 edition of the Albemarle City Directory, which also includes Badin and the rural routes emanating from the Albemarle Post Office. This is the first Hill Directory of Albemarle, and is completely standardized ac- cording to the policies and practices of the Association of North Directory Publishers.
Confidence in the growth of Albemarle's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Albemarle to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and resi- dents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Albe- marle Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of auth- entic information pertaining to the community.
Six Major Departments
The six major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 21 to 324, on white paper. This is the only record in exist- ence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Albemarle and Badin, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation. A special feature of this sec- tion is the designation of the number of children under Directory-listing age in each household.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, preceding the Classified and separately paged from 1 to 72, on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Albemarle and vicinity. The ad- vertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive com- munity like Albemarle, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General ap- preciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 397 to 457, on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in al- phabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such
12
INTRODUCTION
it plays an important part in the daily activities of the com- mercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 461 to 514. In this section the numbered streets are ar- ranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective cross- ing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
THE ALBEMARLE RURAL ROUTES DIRECTORY ex- tends from page 517 to page 550, on white paper.
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, begins opposite page 552.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Albemarle and vicinity. There are more than 600 of these Directory Li- braries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which the Hill Directory Co. is a member.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Direc- tory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

History
Albemarle, incorported in 1842, was named for the Duke of Albemarle. Stanly County, formed in 1841, was named for John Stanly, for many years a member of the General Assembly of North Carolina and Speaker of the House for several terms. The first court house was built in 1842.
Population
Albemarle has a population of 11,751 (1950 U. S. Census preliminary report) within its 5.6 square miles of incor- porated area. The population of Stanly County is 37,086, with 10,310 occupied units. Eighty-five percent of the popu- lation is white, with 15% Negro.
Geography and Climate
Stanly County lies in the famed Piedmont section of North Carolina, with Albemarle situated 40 miles northeast of Charlotte, 30 miles south of Salisbury, 50 miles west of Pinehurst and 110 miles from Raleigh, the state capital. The area is high and rolling, averaging about 700 feet above sea level. The climate is ideal: The summers are not ex- cessively hot and the winters are so mild that snow is sel- dom seen. The annual mean temperature is 60 degrees, ranging from an average of 43.1 degrees in January to 79.1 in July. Annual rainfall is approximately 48 inches.

INTRODUCTION
Government
Albemarle is governed by a mayor and five commis- sioners, elected biennially by the people. The county is governed by a Board of County Commissioners, five in number, also elected biennially.
Municipal Facilities
Stanly County Hospital, with 100 beds, was opened in 1950, and is regarded as one of the most modern of its size in this section of the country. It was built at a cost of $1,300,000, with the funds coming from Federal, State and local sources. More than $700,000 was contributed by local citizens. The hospital is governed by a board of trustees of 35 members, representing all sections of the county. Trustees serve for terms of five years.
Wiscassett Memorial Y. M. C. A., completed in 1950, is one of Albemarle's most valuable assets. A well-rounded program of recreation and character-building is carried on by a large staff. Membership in the Y. M. C. A. is open to all citizens in the county.
A new water plant, completed in early 1951, with the Yadkin River as the source of supply, will provide the city with 4,000,000 gallons of water per day, double the present consumption. Easy expansion of facilities will bring maxi- mum output up to 24,000,000 gallons per day.
A municipal sewage-disposal plant and incinerator will meet the needs of a much larger city.
The power distribution system in Albemarle is muni- cipally-owned, and the profits from the system meet all ex- penses except debt-service requirements. Rates are in line with other cities of similar size in North Carolina.
The police department, consisting of 19 officers and men, three radio-equipped patrol cars and one motorcycle, is adequate for public safety. The fire department boasts the most modern telegraphic fire alarm system in the state. It has two stations in the city, modern equipment, 17 full- time employees and a well-trained volunteer group.
Albemarle's tax rate is $1 per $100 (plus a special school tax of 30c), and the county rate is $1.08 per $100.
The Negroes of Albemarle have their own community (Kingville).
Recreation
Morrow Mountain State Park, located in the Uwharrie Mountains five miles from Albemarle, is one of the most popular recreational spots in the state. Chief attractions are a beautiful swimming pool, a handsome and spacious lodge with dining room, hiking, boating, fishing, and two picnic areas with fireplaces for cooking. Summer cottages, to be completely equipped for housekeeping and to be rented by the week to families, are now under construction.
The Stanly County Country Club maintains an 18-hole golf course at Badin. Other sports include tennis, swim- ming, bowling, riding and softball. For the spectator there are semi-professional baseball games and excellent high school athletic contests.
Albemarle's Rock Creek Park has many recreational facilities: A large swimming pool, tennis courts, softball

field and picnic area. A recreational director is in charge during the summer months.
There are excellent movie theatres and drive-ins.
Education and Religion
The Albemarle School System, consisting of two large high schools and four elementary schools (including one high and one elementary for colored), serves the city school children adequately. Buildings are modern and facilities are above the state average in training and experience. There are 17 Stanly County schools.
Eleven miles north of Albemarle is Pfeiffer Junior Col- lege, one of the best equipped and heaviest endowed junior colleges in the South.
Stanly County Library, housed in a modern building, has over 32,000 volumes. A bookmobile serves the rural areas.
There are more than 20 beautiful churches in Albe- marle, representing practically every religious denomination.
Industry
The chief industry of Albemarle and Stanly County is textile manufacturing. Second in importance is the Caro- lina Aluminum Co. at Badin, seven miles from Albemarle. The hosiery industry ranks third. Wiscassett Mills at Al- bemarle is one of the largest full-fashioned hosiery mills in the South. Also within the county is one of the larg- est producers of stone monuments in the world, the largest producer of broiler-size chickens in the state, a large flour mill, lumber plants, stone and clay products manufacturers, furniture and food industries. There are over 7,500 persons on the county's industrial payroll of over $12,500,000. Many of these employees live in surrounding rural areas and operate small farms in their spare time.
Transportation
Albemarle is served by two railroads, the Winston-Salem Southbound and the Yadkin. Five bus companies operate 29
16
INTRODUCTION
regularly-scheduled bus departures each day to cities in every direction. There is a municipal bus line. Five truck- ing companies offer dependable motor-freight services to all points. Although there is no commercial air line operat- ing in the city at the present time, there is a commercial airport. It has complete facilities for every type of present- day aircraft. There are no landing fees.
Wealth and Finance
The First National Bank, locally owned, has assets total- ing $4,090,000. The Cabarrus Bank & Trust Co. of North Carolina, with assets totaling $37,095,000, has a branch in Albemarle. There are two building and loan associations with assets totaling $5,500,000. Post office receipts totaled $68,559 in 1949, an increase of $15,354 over 1948. Total as- sessed valuation of Albemarle in 1950 was $15,180,000. Esti- mated actual valuation was $50,000,000. Total assessed valuation of Stanly County was $38,319,720, while the esti- mated actual valuation was $115,000,000.
Retail and Wholesale Trade
Albemarle is the home of modern stores and shops and is the trade center for Stanly, Montgomery and the border areas of surrounding counties. Retail sales in the city ap- proach $16,500,000 annually. Wholesale trade in the county has reached $7,000,000 annually. There are over 600,000 people within 50 miles of Albemarle and over 2,000,000 with- in 100 miles. It has been said that the ration of money spent to money earned within the county by its citizens is greater than in any other county in North Carolina.
Agriculture
Although it is the leading and only self-sufficient wheat-producing county in North Carolina, Stanly's most important cash crop is lespedeza seed. Other crops are oats, hay, corn and cotton. The present trend is toward more permanent pasture with resulting increase in live stock. The number of beef cattle has quadrupled in the past few years, while hogs and sheep have shown increases as well. The hay crop provides the foundation for a dairying pro- gram which has grown rapidly, following the establishment of a dairy plant in Albemarle. Poultry is another source of revenue for the farmers. There are few tenant farmers in Stanly County, which means that the farm population is composed of substantial farm-owning citizens. In fact, the balance between industry and agriculture will run as fav- orably as any county in the state.
Communication
Albemarle has two semi-weekly newspapers: The Stanly News and Press and The Albemarle Enterprise. The former has the largest circulation of any semi-weekly newspaper in the South. In addition, there is a 1,000-watt radio sta- tion,, WABZ. There are 3,538 telephones in Albemarle and Stanly County.
Accommodations
Albemarle has two hotels. One is a modern 65-room, air-cooled hotel with sprinkler system and excellent dining- room. There are numerous guest and boarding houses.
