INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1957 edition of the Albemarle City Directory, which also includes Badin.
Confidence in the growth of Albemarle's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Albemarle to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organi- zation, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the pub- lishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Albemarle Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information per- taining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of names and addresses of the business and professional con- cerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under ap- propriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diver- sified community like Albemarle the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common inter- mediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, oc- cupation and address of each adult resident of Albemarle and Badin, and the name, official personnel, nature and ad- dress of each firm and corporation.
791590
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the

householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respec- tive crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, cover- ing the Albemarle and Badin exchanges, is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a port, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Albemarle and vicinity.
The Albemarle Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Albemarle City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Albemarle & Stanly County Chamber of Com- merce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of the more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Asso- ciation of North American Directory Publishers.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
ing to smother it. The county seat of Stanly County, Albe- marle is near the geographical center of the state.
Climate
This area enjoys a mild, healthful climate throughout the year, being neither excessively hot in summer nor cold in winter. The annual mean temperature is 60 degrees. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches, and snowfall is 6.4 inches. The length of the growing season is approximately 189 days. This area is not subject to violent storms or other unusual weather conditions.
History
This city was named for the duke of Albemarle and was incorporated in 1847. The entire area is richly flavored with romantic history of the early settlers (primarily English and French) and of Indian tribes which once roamed the ageless mountain ranges. At one time river traffic came within ten miles of Albemarle, up the Pee Dee River, but of course this long since has given way to the harnessing of river power for electricity. Albemarle played a major role in both the Amer- ican Revolution and the War Between the States. Skirmishes were reported in both wars, and a great deal of legend has been handed down generation-by-generation. There was a gold rush in the county during the 1860's, and at one time there were four mines in operation here.
Government
Albemarle is governed by a mayor and five aldermen, elected biennially by the people. Five commissioners, also elected biennially, govern the county Politically, the com- munity has been traditionally governed by a two-party sys- tem, in keeping with its early heritage.
Municipal Facilities
The Stanly County Hospital was completed in 1950, with all modern facilities to serve this community. Fifteen rooms were added in 1954, bringing the total bed number to 115. Additional clinical and laboratory space was included in the enlargement program. The hospital is well staffed and has many specialists more commonly found in larger cities. The County Medical Center was placed in service in the spring of 1953, and will accommodate numerous patients through the county clinic.
The beautiful Wiscassett Memorial Y.M.C.A. was com- pleted in 1950, and contains recreational facilities surpassed by few communities in the state. The spacious building ac- commodates several recreation and banquet rooms, library, lounges, a large gymnasium, bowling alleys and billiards. It is open to membership of the entire community.
Albemarle has two individual water plants, the largest and most modern of which is currently serving the com- munity. It was completed and placed in service in 1951, and delivers a maximum of 4,000,000 gallons of water daily. Since only 2,000,000 gallons are consumed daily, the plant operates on half capacity. It can easily be expanded to produce 12,000,000 gallons a day. The water is pumped from the Yadkin River, some seven miles away.
The old water plant, having a capacity of 2,000,000 gal- lons daily, is being kept as an emergency measure, and is

operated several times a week by the City to keep it in top condition.
The municipal sewage-disposal system is modern, and adequately meets the needs of the community.
Albemarle owns its power distribution systems and buys its power from Duke Power Co.
Both Albemarle and Stanly County are in excellent financial condition, having floated bonds for municipal and county projects a few years ago. They are paying off these debts at a rapid rate.
The fire and police departments are modern, well- staffed, and have the latest equipment available. There are 24 policemen and 18 firemen protecting the city. The per capita fire loss in 1955 was $ .50. Crime, other than the usual minor offenses, is kept at a minimum here.

INTRODUCTION
Education
The city is equipped with five grade and two high schools, staffed by approximately 80 teachers. Pfeiffer Col- lege is located at Meisenheimer, eleven miles north of Albe- marle. This beautiful campus is staffed with excellent in- structors, and offers a wide variety of studies and degrees.
Churches
Practically all denominations and faiths commonly found in America are among the approximately 25 churches of Albemarle.
Recreation
This is truly an ideal location for recreation. In addition to the Y.M.C.A. already mentioned, 51/2 miles east of town is the 4,000-acre Morrow Mountain State Park. This is known widely as the best park in the state system, and offers such facilities as a beautiful lodge, a spacious swimming pool, six cabins for summer vacationists, a large trailer camp, two picnic areas, camping grounds, scenic roads and trails, boat- ing and fishing. Also a nature and historical museum is operated for study by the public.
The Stanly County Country Club offers a beautiful 18-hole golf course which is considered one of the best in the state.
There are two parks within the City. One is municipal- ly-owned and has a large swimming pool, and the other is a

large playground for children. Other facilities are tennis, softball, hunting and picnicking.
Industries
The chief industry of Albemarle and Stanly County is textile manufacturing. Second in importance is the alum- inum processing plant at Badin, seven miles from Albemarle. The hosiery knitting industry ranks third. Other industries and products are furniture and wood products plants, brick manufacturing, light-weight aggregate products, stone, flour mills and food industries. There are over 7,800 persons in Stanly County on industrial payrolls of approximately $19,000,000 annually. Many of these workers are farm-own- ers, and work both in the mills and tilling their soil.
Transportation
Two railway lines serve Albemarle-the Winston-Salem Southbound and the Yadkin Railroad. The former of these is controlled by the Atlantic Coast Line and the latter is leased by the Southern Railroad.
Four bus companies operate both local and interurban bus services throughout this area. There are three State highways and one U. S. highway intersecting at Albemarle. They are: N. C. 27, 73 and 740 and U. S. 52.

INTRODUCTION
Seven motor-freight carrier lines serve Albemarle on a schedule basis. Few places along the Eastern Seaboard are more than 72 hours from Albemarle by freight.
A locally-owned private airport, offering charter service, serves this area. There are no commercial airlines.
Agriculture
Stanly County is one of the foremost agricultural cen- ters of North Carolina and can boast many "firsts." It is the only exporter of small grain within the state. It is the lead- ing county in lespedeza seed growing. For many years this county has supplied other areas with quality seed. Stanly County ranks high in the production of beef and dairy cattle, poultry products, sheep and swine, and is a big producer of milo, corn and cotton. It has hundreds of acres of perma- nent pastures and hay crops. Tenant-farming is disappear- ing in this area due to the high fertility of the soil and the ability of the farmers to capitalize on it.
