INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Direc- tories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1950-51 edition of the Burlington City Directory, which also includes Elon Coll- ege, Graham and Haw River.
Confidence in the growth of Burlington's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Direc- tory is a mirror truly reflecting Burlington to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the es- timation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Di- rectory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Burlington Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments (Each department beginning with Page 1)
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and busi- ness and professional concerns is the first major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Burlington and vicinity, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.
IL THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, print- ed on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufac- turing, business and professional interests of Burlington and vicinity. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the busi- ness represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Burlington, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. Gen- eral appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
III. THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third ma- jor department, printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indis- pensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Di- rectory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Class- fied Business Directory than through any other medium.
IV. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth major department. In

INTRODUCTION
this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, fol- lowed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order un- der the name of each street, and the names of the householders and con- cerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the designation of homes and places of business having telephones.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per - petual and reliable advertisements of Burlington and vicinity.
The Burlington Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Burlington City Di- rectory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Burling- ton Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 600 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North Ameri- can Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is oper - ated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
IN THE PIEDMONT REGION
Availability
Within 600 miles from the boundaries of Piedmont Carolinas lie New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Little Rock, New Orleans and Miami.
In other words, any part of this section is only about one day's railroad travel from the nation's chief centers of population and indus- try-a consideration that counts heavily in the distribution and market- ing of manufactured goods.
From any part of the Piedmont it is only afew hours by automo- bile over modern paved roads to the wonderful recreational facilities of the mountains in the western Carolinas, to the world-known resorts in the Sandhills-internationally famous for their golf courses-and to the great seaside resorts along the Atlantic Coast.
Labor
Greater than any other resource of Piedmont Carolinas is the character of its men and women. This has made the industrial develop- ment possible and attracted a host of manufacturers.
Long before the Revolution these pioneers ranged down the val- leys of the Appalachians from Pennsylvania, Maryland and other states. Largely of English stock, with admixtures of German and Scotch-Irish, they settled in the hilly Piedmont section. Their descendants are true to those early traditions. They are energetic and ambitious. It is these qualities that years ago overcame the handicap of debt and stagnation left by the Civil War. They are keen totake their place inthe forefront of the nation's development.
Manufacturers comingfrom older, over-industrialized sections, have been struck by the ready intelligence of these people, their eager- ness to be taught, and their loyalty.
National Market
Piedmont Carolinas is 300 miles closer to the country's center of population than, for example, New York City. Based on the Life In- surance Sales Research Bureau studies, careful percentages have been worked out for every county in the U. S. in terms of ability to buy.
A 600-mile circle (the economical marketing radius) center on New York reaches 44.5 o/o of the national purchasing power. Centered on areas farther north and east, a smaller proportion of the national market will be included.
A similar circle drawn from Piedmont Carolinas embraces 66.8 o/o of the country's purchasing power -a 50 oo greater availability to the national market.
Cost of Living
It has been estimated by one authority that the cost of living aver - ges each Piedmont workman several dollars per week less than an e- ual standard of living costs in more highly industrialized parts of the country. Houses cost less; food costs less. The mild climate requires lower fuel and clothing costs. Naturally labor costs less.

INTRODUCTION
CIVIC FEATURES
Location and Area
Alamance County is located in the famous rapidly-developing industrial area known as the Piedmont Section. It lies between north latitude 35 degrees 52 minutes and 36 degrees 17 minutes and west lon- gitude 79 degrees 16 minutes and 79 degrees 34 minutes, in the north central section of the state. (Burlington's altitude is 656 feet). The county has 492 square miles land area, or 314,880 acres.
History and Peoples
The following is quoted from a study by John W. Harden, entitled "Alamance County: Economic and Social," and published by the Univer - sity of North Carolina: "It is not known exactly when the early settlers came to the region which is now Alamance County, but in 1700, when Lawson, an English explorer and adventurer, journeyed through this lo- cality, he found it heavily forested and in the hands of the Saxaphaw In- dians, with only a few scattered whites present.
"It seems that this section of the state was first settledby emi- grants from the Rhine River section of Germany, known as the Palatine. "These early settlers were augmented in 1720 by immigration of settlers from the North, and it was this movement that gave the region its first white inhabitants in any number. These came from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and even the more distant New England. The newcomers were mostly Scotch-Irish, German and Eng- lish families, the last being mainly Quaker in religion." .
Population
In 1930 the population within Burlington's city limits was 9,737, with several thousand in the immediate suburbs. According to the 1944 special U. S. Census, the city's population was 21,830.
