A wie woman has said that electric service pro- motes a good disposition and that good dispositions are ential to happy homes.
It's worth thinking about, anyway.

INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1936 edition of the Charlotte City Directory.
Confidence in the continued growth of Charlotte's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Charlotte to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the pub- lishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Charlotte Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.
Five Major Departments
The five major departments are arranged in the following order :-
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 21 to 54, printed on tinted paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Charlotte. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a large commercial and industrial center like Charlotte, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 55 to 674. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Charlotte, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY extends from page 675 to page 714.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, covers pages 715 to 926. In this section the named streets are arranged in alphabetical order, followed by the numbered streets in numerical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 927 to 990. This department lists the names of all business and professional con- cerns in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature con- stitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily avail- able for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertise- ments of Charlotte.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

HISTORICAL FOREWORD
Charlotte, North Carolina; population, 82,675, U. S. Census of 1930 (over 90,000 including suburbs), is the geographical and commercial center and the largest city of the two Carolinas. Charlotte was settled in 1750 by the Scotch-Irish and Germans who came south through Pennsylvania and Virginia, and the English, Scotch, Germans, Huguenots, and Swiss who
13
INTRODUCTION
came north from Charleston, South Carolina. The present population of the entire state is less than one per cent foreign-born. The city was in- corporated in 1768.
Charlotte, "the Queen City of the South," was so named in honor of Princess Charlotte, of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who in 1761 became the wife of George III. It is the county seat of Mecklenburg County, named in memory of the birthplace of the Queen.
May 20, 1775, a date borne on the state flag of North Carolina, marked the signing of the famous Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence at the court house in Charlotte. The document anticipated much of the national declaration which was signed on July 4 of the following year.
"The Hornets' Nest" tradition, so long picturesquely associated with Charlotte, started at the time of the uncomfortable and nearly disastrous occupancy of Charlotte by forces under Lord Cornwallis in September of 1780. The British commander is responsible for the title.
The last meeting of the cabinet of the Confederate States presided over by Jefferson Davis was held in Charlotte on April 10, 1865.
Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the U. S., and James K. Polk, the eleventh, were born in Mecklenburg County.
CLIMATE AND TOPOGRAPHY
The Charlotte climate and that of the Piedmont area is dry and in- vigorating. Summer temperatures equal those in lower New York and Pennsylvania, but with much less humidity. There are no protracted periods of extreme heat. Rainfall is moderate and evenly distributed. There is abundant sunshine throughout the year, and the plateau is at an elevation discouraging to disease germs. Prevailing winds are such that the humidity is generally low and heat prostration is unknown.
Mountains a short distance to the west of Charlotte afford a barrier to cold waves, and winter temperatures are consistently mild and equable.
Temperatures below 20 degrees are rare. The mean annual tempera- ture is 60.2 degrees, and the annual precipitation is 49.2 inches. Charlotte is 780 feet above sea level.
MUNICIPALITY AND COUNTY
Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are closely knit into a cooperative and progressive city-county community. Tax rates are commensurate with the trend of the times and with moderate appropriations to public works. The city and county have an assessed valuation of approximately $200,000,000 and a real value of nearly $300,000,000.
Municipally-owned water works are of the finest and have been de- signed for extensive future increase. The pipe line into the city has a capacity of 20,000,000 gallons in twenty-four hours, and the million-dollar filter plant has a rated capacity of 10,000,000 gallons.
It is impossible in restricted space to describe in detail the extensive city, county, and federal departmental organizations with offices in Char- lotte. Illustrations will reveal something of the classic beauty and generous proportions of the buildings housing these agencies.
Charlotte has an efficient fire department, with a corps of 126 mens, and excellent policing, sanitary, health and welfare departments, all ade- quately equipped to meet any emergency.
CHARLOTTE TODAY
Twenty-five years ago the South began to arouse from its bed of rich, deep traditions and bestir itself. There is a new South today-an onward- driving, pulsating South in industry, agriculture and finance.
Fundamentally successful industries develop best where abundant raw materials, mechanical power and stable population combine. Tremendously rich in natural resources, power and raw materials, the South has strided forward with seven-league boots, and today, the economic advantages re- sulting from the development of its resources are leading the trail of in- dustry Southward.
