INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1949 edition of the Concord City Directory, which also includes the rural routes emanating from the Concord Post Office. This is the first Hill Directory of Concord, and is completely standardized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
Confidence in the growth of Concord's industry, popula- tion and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Di- rectory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Concord to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organ- ization, and having had the courteous and hearty coopera- tion of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Concord Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.
Six Major Departments
- The six major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 17 to 377, on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Concord, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city. A special feature of this section is the designation of the number of children under Directory- listing age in each household.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, preceding the Classified and separately paged from 1 to 96, on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Concord. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Concord, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 477 to 542, on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alpha- betical order under appropriate headings. This feature con- stitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the com-

INTRODUCTION
mercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 545 to 611. In this section the names of the streets are ar- ranged in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the house- holders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
THE CONCORD RURAL ROUTES DIRECTORY extends from page 613 to page 632, on white paper.
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, begins opposite page 611.
Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Concord. There are more than 600 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which the Hill Directory Co. is a member.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

CONCORD
YOU'LL LIKE CONCORD, NORTH CAROLINA
By Harry Lee Johnston, Secretary, Concord Merchants Association
-
This community was founded in 1793, and named Con- cord because the Scotch-Irish settlers of the west and the German-Dutch-Swiss of the east had reached an agreement in a dispute over the location of the county seat by placing it midway between the sites advocated by the two factions.
The city of Concord is located in the heart of the famous Piedmont Plateau, which section is noted for its industry, rich farm lands and climate. The city occupies an ideal elevation of 703 feet. It is only three or four hours' drive from the seashore or the mountains, and the climate is re- garded as near perfect.
Concord is on the main line (double tracked) of the Southern Railway, and is 359 miles south of Washington and 289 miles north of Atlanta. The county also is traversed by the Norfolk-Southern Railway, which runs from Char- lotte, N. C., to Norfolk, Va. These railroads give the city and county excellent passenger and freight service to all leading markets, both North and South. The city also has excellent motorbus transportation, with direct service being maintained to all nearby points.
Concord is located in, and is the county seat of, Cabar- rus County, and has a population of over 20,000 within its corporate city limits. The 1949 population of Greater Con- cord is estimated at 26,650. The city has shown a steady growth through the past several years, and is now one of the best managed cities in the country and is in excellent condition financially. Living and working conditions are excellent, and the unemployment percentage is low.
The county has an estimated population of over 66,000. Concord serves a trading area containing some 100,000 people, and with the splendid system of highways and good roads leading into the city, it offers an ideal trading center.
City Government
Concord has the aldermanic form of city government and the governing body consists of a mayor and seven alder- men, with one alderman elected from each of the city's six wards, and one at large.
Concord now has a tax rate of $1.32 per $100 valuation. The total assessed valuation of real and personal property for tax purposes is $18,300,000.
The city always has enjoyed good government, and its financial affairs have been ably handled. It has an efficient engineering department, and has modern facilities for handling this work. Protection is afforded to citizens and property of Concord by a police force of 25 members, and a modern and efficient fire department equipped with the latest devices in fire-fighting equipment is maintained.
