INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., INC., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1952 edition of the Concord City Directory, which also includes Brown Mill, Cannon Mill, Franklin Mill, Hartsell Mill, Jackson Park, Shankletown, Sidestown, Silver Hill, and the rural routes emanating from the Concord Post Office.
Confidence in the growth of Concord's industry, popula- tion and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Con- cord to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Concord Directory will fulfill its mis- sion as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Six Major Departments
The six major departments are arranged in the following order :-
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the first major depart- ment, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existance that aims to show the name, marital satus, occupation and ad- dress of each adult resident of Concord and vicinity, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation. A special feature of this section is the designation of the number of children under Directory-listing age in each household.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, the second major department, print- ed on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Concord and vicinity. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference adver- tising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Concord, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General appre- ciatio nof this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is the third major department, printed on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns of the whole community in alphabetical order under appropriate head- ings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Direc- tory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through

any other medium.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, is the fourth maior department. In this section the numbered streets are ar- ranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersect- ing streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of ten- ant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
THE CONCORD RURAL ROUTES DIRECTORY is the fifth major department, printed on white paper.
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the sixth major department.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufactur- ing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this informa- tion, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Di- rectory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Concord and vicinity. There are more than 600 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Pub- lishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which the Hill Directory Co., is a member.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an ad- vertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a com- mensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
History
Concord was founded in 1793 by Scotch-Irish and German- Dutch settlers, and named Concord when the two factions set- tled a dispute over the location of the county seat. The first court house was built in 1796. In 1872 a new and larger court house was built, but three years later it was destroyed by fire. The present court house was built in 1875.
The first gold discovered in the U. S. was in Cabarrus Coun- ty in 1799. The nugget weighed approximately 17 pounds. In 1903 a nugget was found which weighed 28 pounds, one of the largest ever found, and a replica of this nugget is in the Smith- sonian Institution in Washington, D. C.
The name, Concord, has prophetic significance. The city has lived up to its name in mutual understanding and helpful- ness among its citizens.
Concord's growth has been accomplished through working together, sharing together, and planning together for a better city and a better citizenship. It is a city that honors its past, that fosters civic pride in building for a better future.
Government
Concord is administered by a board of aldermen and a mayor, who are elected by the people. Every man on this board is a business man, and the city is run on a business basis. Cabar- rus County is governed by a board of county commissioners, who are elected by popular vote of the citizens. The City and County government is among the best to be found anywhere.
Transportation
Concord is on the main north-south line of the Southern Railway, and also is served by the Carolina Trailways Bus Line
