INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1957 edition of the Concord City Directory, which also includes Beverly Hills, Brown Mill, Cannon Mill, Frank- lin Mill, Grove Park, Hartsell Mill, Jackson Park, Shankle- town, Sides Town, Silver Hill, and the rural routes emanat- ing from the Concord Post Office.

Confidence in the growth of Concord's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Concord to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organi- zation, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Concord Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appro- priate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more com- plete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference ad- vertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Concord, the ne- cessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the com- mercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Concord and vicinity and on the Concord rural routes, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de-

partment, printed on pink paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in nu- merical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special fea- tures of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Concord and vicinity.

The Concord Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Concord City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Concord Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Direc- tory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Location

Concord, county seat of Cabarrus County, is located in the heart of the Piedmont section of North Carolina, al- most midway between Washington, D. C., and Atlanta. It is only 124 miles from the State capital, Raleigh. The land surrounding Concord is gently rolling and well drained, with a plentiful water supply. The population of the city, accord- ing to the 1950 U. S. Census, was 16,486, and of the county, 63,783.

Climate

The climate in and around Concord is ideal; the average annual temperature is 62.6 degrees. Temperature ranges from 42.3 in January to 78.8 in July. Pleasant, mild weather is

enjoyed for more than six months of the year-60.6 in spring; 61.9 in fall. The average winter temperature is 49.5. Naturally, there are a few extremes in weather. The eleva- tion is 705 feet above sea level.

History

Concord was founded in 1793 by Scotch-Irish and Ger- man-Dutch settlers, and named Concord when the two fac- tions settled a dispute over the location of the county seat. The first court house was built in 1796. In 1872 a new and larger court house was built, but three years later it was destroyed by fire. The present court house was built in 1875.

The first gold discovered in the U. S. was in Cabarrus County in 1799. The nugget weighed approximately 17 pounds. In 1903 a nugget was found which weighed 28 pounds, one of the largest ever found, and a replica of this nugget is in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C.

The name, Concord, has prophetic significance. The city has lived up to its name in mutual understanding and help- fulness among its citizens.

Concord's growth has been accomplished through work- ing together, sharing together, and planning together for a better city and a better citizenship. It is a city that honors its past, that fosters civic pride in building for a better future.

Government

Concord is administered by a board of aldermen and a mayor, who are elected by the people. Every man on this board is a business man, and the city is run on a business basis. Cabarrus County is governed by a board of county commissioners, who are elected by popular vote of the citi- zens. The City and County government is among the best to be found anywhere.
