TN ADDITION to names and addresses, your City Direc- tory contains much detailed information concerning the people of your community. In order to list this information certain symbols and designations have been developed which enable important statistics to be compressed into the smallest possible space. You will receive far greater benefits from your City Directory if you familiarize yourself with the symbols and what they stand for.
In checking credit applications, in conducting direct mail advertising programs, in planning sales campaigns, in build- ing prospect lines, and in scores of other ways your City Directory will prove of invaluable assistance.

INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1959 edition of the Concord City Directory, which also includes Beverly Hills, Brown Mill, Cannon Mill, Frank- lin Mill, Grove Park, Hartsell Mill, Jackson Park, Shankle- town, Sides Town Silver Hill and the rural routes emanat- ing from the Concord Post Office.
Confidence in the growth of Concord's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly re- flecting Concord to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organi- zation, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Concord Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the ac- tivities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, like- wise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertise- ments and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Con- cord, the necessity of having this kind of information up- to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Concord, Beverly Hills, Brown Mill, Cannon Mill, Franklin Mill, Grove Park, Hartsell Mill, Jackson Park, Shankletown, Sides Town, Silver Hill and rural routes residents, and the name, official

personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in nu- merical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special fea- tures of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Concord and vicinity.
The Concord Out-of-Town Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Concord City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Concord Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Direc- tory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
History
The name "Concord" has prophetic significance. The city was founded in 1793 by Scotch-Irish and German-Dutch settlers, and named Concord when the two factions came into "concord" after disputing the location of the county seat. The city has lived up to its name in mutual under- standing and helpfulness among its citizentry.
The first court house was built in 1796. In 1872, a new and larger court house was built, but three years later it was destroyed by fire. The present court house was built in 1875.
The first gold nugget discovered in the United States was found in Cabarrus County in 1799. This nugget, weigh- ing approximately 17 pounds, is now in the Smithsonian In- stitute in Washington, D. C.
Concord was one of the early textile areas to develop in the South and has continued to lead in industrial progress in dyeing, finishing, and weaving of materials. Cannon Mills, with some of its plants located here, produces more bath equipment than any other company in the world.
One of the earliest state reformatories in the nation was built here in 1910 at Jackson Training School, and the juvenile delinquency solution was early thought to be educa- tion and training.
Led by prominent citizens imbued with civic pride and community interest, Concord has grown to be one of the leading industrial cities in the south. Its citizenship is pro- gressive and aggressive, and it is the home of many indus- trial enterprizes.
Government
Concord is administered by a Board of Aldermen and a Mayor who are elected by the people. Every man on this Board is a business man, and our city is run on a business

Capital, Delta, Eastern, Piedmont, and Southern Air Lines operate from Charlotte.
Communications
