INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories (publishers of the Concord Directory since 1949), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1963-64 edition of the Concord City Directory, which also in- cludes Beverly Hills, Brown Mill, Cannon Mill, Franklin Mill, Grove Park, Hartsell Mill, Jackson Park, Shankletown, Sides Town, Silver Hill and Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Concord's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflect- ing Concord to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organiza- tion, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publish- ers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Concord Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertain- ing to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order:

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate head- ings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presenta- tion of their products or services. Following this is the Classi- fied Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings- a catalog of all the activities of the city. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Concord, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in

803196

viii

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Concord, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numeri- cal order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respec- tive crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broad- cast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Concord and vicin- ity.

The Concord Out-of-Town Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Concord City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Concord Chamber of Commerce Inc., for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and towns through- out the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City. Directories or other reference media, and providing protection against fraud- ulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Direc- tory Publishers in 1898, and adhered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one heading that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertising, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Directories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifi- cations, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a

tendency to mislead or which does not con- form to business integrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and advertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of reference publicity upon its ac- cessibility to seekers, rather than on the number of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved organization and individuals engaged in creative adver- tising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public serv- ice, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.

INTRODUCTION

History

Concord was founded in 1793 by Scotch-Irish and German- Dutch settlers and named Concord when the two factions settled a dispute over the location of County seat. The first court house was built in 1796. In 1872 a new and larger court house was built, but three years later was destroyed by fire. The present court house was built in 1875. The first gold dis- covered in the United States was in Cabarrus County in 1799. The nugget found weighed approximately 17 pounds. In 1903 a nugget was found which weighed 28 pounds, one of the largest ever found, and a replica of this nugget is in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C. The name, Concord, has pro- phetic significance. The city has lived up to its name in mutual understanding and helpfulness among its citizens.

Concord was one of the early textile areas to develop in the South and has continued to lead in industrial progress in dyeing, finishing, and weaving of materials. Cannon Mills, with some of its plants located here, produces more bath equip- ment than any other company in the world.

One of the earliest state reformatories in the nation was built here in 1910 at Jackson Training School, and the juvenile delinquency solution was early thought to be education and training.

A thriving city of the rich Piedmont Section of North Caro- lina, takes pardonable pride in its achievements. Led by prominent citizens imbued with civic pride and community interest, Concord has grown to be one of the leading industrial cities in the South, its citizenship is aggressive and progressive, and it is the home of many industrial enterprises.

Government

Concord is administered by a Board of Aldermen and a Mayor who are elected by the people. Every man on this Board is a business man, and our city is run on a business basis. Cabarrus County is governed by a Board of County Commissioners who are elected by popular vote of the citi- zens. Our city and county governments are such to be proud of.

Transportation

Concord is on the main North-South line of Southern Railway, and is also served by Carolina Trailways Bus Line, Kannapolis Transit Co., and Concord Bus Line. Five truck- ing and transfer companies operate out of Concord. City trans- portation is provided by a city bus line and ample taxi serv- ice. National Transfer companies make daily pick-ups and deliveries in Concord. Air travel accommodations can be se- cured only 21 miles away, at Charlotte Airport, including Capital, Delta, Eastern, Piedmont and Southern Air Lines.

Communications

The Concord Tribune published daily except Saturday, has a circulation of 9,964 and gets its news from AP Service. Three radio stations.
