INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, (pub- lishers of the Durham City Directory since 1903), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1958 edition of the Durham City Directory, which also includes Bragtown, Hope Valley, Joyland, Rockwood, Rollingwood, Sherron Acres and Tuscaloosa Forest.

Confidence in the continued growth of Durham's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be main- tained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Durham to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Durham Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Direc- tory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the cata- log itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or mar- kets for goods. In a great commercial and industrial center like Durham, the the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immedi- ately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the com- mercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Durham, Bragtown, Hope Valley, Joyland, Rockwood, Rollingwood, Sherron Acres and Tuscaloosa Forest, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AV- ENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this sec- tion the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this department are the designation of tenant- owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.

14

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a

business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Durham and vicinity.

The Durham Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Durham City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Durham Chamber of Com- merce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by mem- bers of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognitionby those progres- sive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

History

In April, 1865, at a log cabin known as the Bennett Place, near Durham Sta- tion, there occured one of the most historic events in the history of the nation. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox, and the future looked dark indeed for the Southern states. Jefferson Davis and his cabinet had escaped to Greensboro, North Carolina, and there had held fiery debate as to the advisability of continu- ing the Civil War. Some members of the cabinet favored continuing hostilities at any cost, even though it meant carrying on a guerilla warfare, while others took the position that the cause of the Confederacy was forever lost and that no

good could be accomplished by further bloodshed. Finally it was decided to in- struct General Joseph E. Johnson, commander of the Confederate Armies of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, to negotiate terms of peace with General Wm. Tecumseh Sherman, commander of the Federal Army that had broken the back- bone of the Confederacy by reason of its famous march to the sea. These two generals met at the Bennett Place and signed a tentative peace agreement. This agreement was so favorable to the South that General Grant refused to approve it, but after several days' conference, it was amended to meet General Grant's demands and was signed and approved by the governments of the North and South, and the War between the States came to a close.

INTRODUCTION

Marking the place of surrender, just four miles from Durham, there has been erected, through the generosity of Mrs. S. T. Morgan, a beautiful monu- ment consisting of two columns, one representing the North and the other the South, joined together by a crosspiece on which is the word "unity." This his- toric spot, the birthplace of a reunited nation, is visited each year by thousands of people.

The death of the Confederacy gave birth to the city of Durham, and out of the ashes of the hopes of the Southern people has been built a great and beautiful city. In 1865 Durham Station was a small and insignificant point on the North Carolina Railroad, inhabited by less than 100 persons. There was one lone busi- ness enterprise here, a crude and unimportant tobacco factory with total assets of less than $2,000, including not only products on hand, but representing also the entire investment and replacement. History and tradition unite in saying that this factory was broken into by Sherman's soldiers and a large part of the stock carried away. Tradition further says that the product carried away was so well made and of such quality that when the soldiers returned to the pursuit of civil life, letters came back to Durham to ascertain if there was more of the product upon the market. To supply this demand a broken business was rebuilt.
