INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY CO. Inc., publisliers of Southeastern Directories (publishers of the Fayetteville City Directory since 1906), present to subscribers and the general pub- lic, this, the 1958 edition of the Fayetteville City Directory, which also includes Bonnie Doone, Drake Park, East Fayetteville, Honeycutt, Lakedale, Lafayette Village, Massey Hill and Myrtle Hill.

Confidence in the growth of Fayetteville's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Fayetteville to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the pub- lic, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Fayetteville Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Directory, This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Fayetteville, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and pro- fessional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and pro- fessional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Fayetteville, Bonnie Doone, Drake Park, East Fayette- ville, Honeycutt, Lakedale, Lafayette Village, Massey Hill and Myrtle Hill, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major department printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alpha- betical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the housebolders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are tbe designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, is the fourth major depart- ment, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms wbat it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Fayetteville and vicinity.

The Fayetteville Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Fayetteville City Directory, a Di- rectory Library is maintained in the offices of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the North American Directory Publishers, under wbose supervision the system is operated.

792533

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Di- rectory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing protection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly adhered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all de- partments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one heading that best describes it, and to treat addi- tional listings as advertising, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Directories to supply them; to revise and standard- ize methods and classifications, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a business and

social reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business in- tegrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circu- lation, placing the test of reference publicity upon its accessibility to seek- ers, rather than on the number of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved or- ganizations and individuals engaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the high- est and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

FAYETTEVILLE

(Courtesy Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce)

HISTORIC FAYETTEVILLE

Fayetteville was settled on the banks of the Cape Fear River at the mouth of Cross Creek in 1739, by Scotsmen, who named the place Campbellton. About a mile from Campbellton on upper Cross Creek a grist mill was built in 1765. A village grew up around the mill, and the trading center which resulted was called Cross Creek. It was thus named because of a phenomenon of nature, two creeks crossing each other practically at right angles, the waters of one running under the waters of the other. The phenomen- on later was destroyed by the building of a dam and mill on one of the creeks. In 1778 Campbellton and Cross Creek were united. When the community was incorporated five years later, the town was named Fayetteville, thus becoming the first American settlement to be named in honor of the French General Marquis de Lafayette, who had been of such valuable service to the American Colonies during the Revolutionary War.

On June 20, 1775, more than a year before the Philadelphia Declaration of Inde- pendence, 39 Cumberland County patriots adopted resolutions of independence and pledged themselves to the defense of American Liberty. These resolutions were written and signed first by Col. Robert Rowan. The resolutions became known as the Liberty Point Resolves, and the spot at which the patriots met is known to this day as Liberty Point, and it is suitably marked with a plaque bearing the names of the patriots.

The Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry is the second oldest military organiza- tion in America, organized in 1793. The first captain was Robert Adam, who died in 1801 and is buried in Cross Creek Cemetery. The F. I. L. I was a member of the noted "Bethel Regiment." taking part in the first battle of the War Between the States, June 10, 1861. Its members have taken part in every war in which our country has been en- gaged.

A disastrous fire occured in Fayetteville on May 29, 1831, destroying almost the entire town. The loss has been estimated at from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.

The center of Fayetteville's historic life. the State House, originally was built about 1780. The General Assembly met there in 1788, 1789, 1790 and 1793. There the Federal Constitution was adopted in 1789, and the charter was granted for the University of North Carolina, America's oldest state university. In that same year, land for the State of Tennessee was ceded by tlie General Assembly. The great fire of 1831 destroyed the building, and the present structure was erected about 1838. This also has been called the Town House or Town Hall. After the War Between the States, it came to be known as tlie Market House, because meat and produce were sold there under its Moorish arches.
