INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., INC., publishers of Southeastern Directories (pub- lishers of the Fayetteville City Directory since 1906), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1961 edition of the Fayetteville City Directory, which also includes Bonnie Doone, Drake Park, East Fayetteville, Lakedale, Lafayette Village, Massey Hill and Myrtle Hill.
Confidence in the growth of Fayetteville's industry, population and wealth and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sec- tions of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflect- ing Fayetteville to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has beenestablished by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Fayetteville Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic informa- tion pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order: -
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major department of the Direc- tory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the ad- vertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Fayetteville, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and profes- sional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Fayetteville, Bonnie Doone, Drake Park, East Fayetteville, Lakedale, Lafayette Village, Massey Hill and Myrtle Hill, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AV- ENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and busi- ness concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the num- bers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective cross- ing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, is the fourth major department.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a

business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Fayette- ville and vicinity.
The Fayetteville Out-of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Fayetteville City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 700 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognitionby those progres- sive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as anadvertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

FAYETTEVILLE - CUMBERLAND COUNTY
A Growing Metropolitan Area in North Carolina
Situated at the head of navigation, 115 miles inland on the Cape Fear River, this area has shown a remarkable growth during the past twenty years:

1950
1940
Fayetteville
47,106
34,715
17,428
Other
101,312
61,291
41,892
Total Cumberland County 148,418
96,006 59,320
Present indications are that this rate of growth will most likely continue, with a more complete utilization of its many natural advantages and resources.
Located midway between New York and Florida on the new Interstate 95,the area is of course between two tremendous markets. Being situated on the main line of the Atlantic Coast Line and also being served between these two areas by National Airlines, transportation is of the finest. For the heavier or bulkier needs, Fayetteville is the head of navigation on the Cape Fear River which accommodates standard size river barges that can presently originate or ter- minate from Jacksonville, Florida on the South to Trenton, New Jersey to the North.
North Carolina's Governor Terry Sanford is a splendid example of the agressive and progressive young men who are definitely "on the go" for "The Old North State." Governor Sanford is from Fayetteville.

The area provides a modern educational system. The Fayetteville City Schools presently have an enrollment of 9,549 in eighteen buildings, with 359 instructors. The Cumberland County System operates thirty buildings with 541 teachers for 15,872 students. Two parochial schools through the eighth grade operate for an enrollment of 598.
In additionto elementary education, Fayetteville is presently constructing a new $400,000 Industrial Education Center for Vocational training and scheduled to open in the Fall of 1961.
A modern private business school, Worth's, works with a combined day and night enrollment of some two hundred.

Methodist College - Opened Fall, 1960
Fayetteville has two institutions of higher learning, four year Methodist College, opened Fall of 1960, above; and Fayetteville State Teachers College, established in 1877. Methodist College, sponsored jointly by the Church and the Community, is being developed progressively with another class being added each year until 1963 when it will offer four full years. Fayetteville State Teachers College is an accredited school.

INTRODUCTION
Cape Fear Valley Hospital
Fayetteville and Cumberland County have kept pace with the rapid growth indicated and yet have been able to accomplish this without having to levy pro- hibitive taxes.
The city, with four fire stations, a fifth in the planning stage, 72 firemen and very modern equipment provides the community with an NB3 fire insurance rating. There is none better in North Carolina.
Its water system, with practically unlimited quantities for future needs, is kept well in advance of existing needs. The City also operates a highly modern sewage treatment plant.

XIII
INTRODUCTION
The municipal park system now contains some 175 acres, divided among some 29 areas. Regular organized programs in arts and crafts supplement the regular park operations.
Fayetteville enjoys a very large retail trade. Gross retail sales for Cum- berland County during 1960 totaled in excess of $126 million. In addition to a modern and complete downtown area, Fayetteville has four active new shopping centers in the outlying area plus another that is presently under construction.
Homes are a very fine part of this thriving community with over twenty new developments presently active to fill the demand for housing in price ranges from $10,000 on up.
Fayetteville has two Country Clubs, each with an eighteen hole golf course and other facilities. For the avid golfer, should he want further fields to con- quer, it is barely an hour's drive to all the world renowned courses in the Pinehurst-Southern Pines Area.
A glance at these new or recent installations along the banks of the Cape Fear River are enough to assure the Fayetteville-Cumberland County Area of a continual expansion and growth. In addition to the transportation features of- fered by this famous old river that brought many of our Country's first Scots- men to the Carolinas, it has an average daily flow of some three billion gallons that has scarcely been tapped.
