INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeastern Directories (publishers of the Fayetteville City Directory since 1906), presents to sub- scribers and the general public, this, the 1963 edition of the Fayetteville City Directory, which also includes Bonnie Doone, Drake Park, East Fayette- ville, Lakedale, Lafayette Village, Massey Hill and Myrtle Hill.
Confidence in the growth of Fayetteville's industry, population and wealth and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Fayetteville to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Fayetteville Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order: --
I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete pre- sentation of their products or services. Following this is the Classified Busi- ness section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the community, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings -- a catalog of all the activities of the com- munity. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Fayetteville, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Fayetteville, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and busi- ness concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major de- partment, printed on blue paper.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To

Present indications are that this rate of growth will most likely continue, with a more complete utilization of its many natural advantages and resources.
Located midway between New York and Florida on the new Interstate 95, the area is of course between two tremendous markets. Being situated on the main line of the Atlantic Coast Line and also being served between these two areas by Interstate 95, transportation is of the finest. For the heavier or bulkier needs, Fayetteville is the head of navigation on the Cape Fear River, which accommodates standard size river barges that can presently originate or terminate from Jacksonville, Florida on the South to Trenton, New Jersey to the North.
North Carolina's Governor Terry Sanford is a splendid example of the aggressive and progressive young men who are definitely "on the go" for "The Old North State." Governor Sanford is from Fayetteville.
Five banks, with resources totaling $561,529,138, and three Savings & Loan groups with assets amounting to $48,154,255 serve the financial needs of the area.
One hundred sixty-two churches provide a considerable portion of the area's social life. These represent all major denominations including Catholic, Jewish and most all protestant.
The area provides a modern educational system. The Fayetteville City Schools presently have an enrollment of 11,126 in eighteen buildings, with 796 instructors. The Cumberland County System operates thirty-four buildings with 661 teachers for 19,749 students. Two parochial schools through the eighth grade operate for an enrollment of 605.
In addition to elementary education, Fayetteville has recently opened a new $500,000 Industrial Education Center for Vocational training.

Three hospitals with 717 rooms presently operate within the City. Cape Fear Valley and Highsmith are public while the third is a U. S. Veterans Hospital. The community currently has some sixty-six physicians and surgeons, not including those with the Veterans facility.
Fayetteville and Cumberland County have kept pace with the rapid growth indicated and yet have been able to accomplish this without having to levy pro- hibitive taxes.
The city, with five fire stations, 74 firemen and very modern equipment provides the community with an NB3 fire insurance rating. There is none better in North Carolina.
Its water system, with practically unlimited quantities for future develop- ment and expansion, is kept well in advance of existing needs. The City also operates a highly modern sewage treatment plant.
The municipal park system now contains some 200 acres, divided among some 34 areas. Regular organized programs in arts and crafts supplement the regular park operations.
Fayetteville enjoys a very large retail trade. Gross retail sales for Cum- berland County during 1962 totaled in excess of $177 million. In addition to a modern and complete downtown area, Fayetteville has four active new shopping centers in the outlying area plus another that is presently under construction.
