INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeastern Directories (pub- lishers of the Fayetteville City Directory since 1906), presents to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1964 edition of the Fayetteville City Directory, which also includes Bonnie Doone, Drake Park, East Fayetteville, Lafayette Village, Lakedale, Massey Hill and Myrtle Hill.
Confidence in the growth of Fayetteville's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Fayetteville to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Fayetteville Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order: --.
I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department of the Di- rectory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and busi- ness cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presentation of their products or services. Following this is the Classified Business sec- tion, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the community, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the community. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Fayetteville, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Fayetteville, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the com- munity.
+
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and busi- ness concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numb- ers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major de- partment, printed on blue paper.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Fayetteville and vicinity.
The Fayetteville Out-of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Fayetteville City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Fayetteville Area Chamber of Commerce Inc., for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in the cities and towns throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those pro- gressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confi- dence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

People from each of the adjoining six counties are presently employed in the City of Fayetteville, or in industries that are situated adjacent to the City. These seven counties have a combined population of 415, 739 and that is supplemented by those at nearby Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base.
These adjacent counties, together with 1960 population figures, are as follows:
Bladen 28,881

Cumberland County and Fayetteville experienced phenomenal growth as a result of activities at Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base during World War II. Because of a number of circumstances, this growth was not only retained but actually increased, as indicated by the figures above. Being situated mid- way on the principal route between New York and Florida has had its effect. The combination of Interstate Route 95 and U. S. Highways 301, 401 and 13 has developed the tourist business to the point that Cumberland County now ranks fifth in that phase of the State's economy, in spite of the fact that it is not a resort area.

INTRODUCTION
Town of Spring Lake
Pictured here are two of several attractive smaller communities in Cumberland County. Spring Lake, shown above, registered a population of 4,110 in the 1960 census, and is situated ten miles north and west of Fayetteville on highways NC 24, NC 87 and NC 210, adjacent to Fort Bragg. It is also served by a branch line of the Atlantic Coast Line. Hope Mills, shown below, had a population of 1,109 in 1960. It is situated on NC 59, a belt line highway connecting US 401 North with US 401 South, US 301 South and I 95 South. It is situated on the main line of the A. C. L., the V. & C. S. and is about five miles from Fayetteville municipal airport. There are numerous other very attractive smaller communities in Cumberland County, all of which are situated on either highway, rail or both. A review of the population pattern will indicate that of 170,000 county residents, some hundred thousand live in the area outside the City of Fayetteville.

INTRODUCTION
A hotel and motel haven of rest for the tired traveler or the bushed busi- ness baron.
HOTEL ROOMS - 347 MOTEL ROOMS - 1,114
Situated on Interstate 95, US 13, US 301, US 401, NC 24, NC 53, NC 59, NC 71, NC 87 and NC 210, Fayetteville is host nightly to hundreds of people going in all directions. Being midway on the Florida/New York Throughway, hotels and motels in the area have been forced to maintain modern facilities which will fill better the needs of the traveler on a tight budget and the one who demands the best. All are air conditioned for your comfort and include television. Most all either have their own fine restaurant or there is one near by.
The hotels and some motels are located downtown, and many of the motel units are between the Municipal Airport and downtown. Several have special meeting rooms that will accommodate from twelve to one hundred-twenty for meals, more for meetings. In season, most all have modern pools for a refreshing dip during the daytime or for a bit of relaxing before retiring. Should you have a bit of time to spare, Fayetteville is quite historic and offers a number of interesting places to visit. Weekdays, weather permitting, there are mass parachute drops of both men and equipment at near-by Fort Bragg, home of the STRAC Command and the famous 82nd Airborne Division. These are open to the public.

INTRODUCTION
DOWNTOWN IN FAYETTEVILLE !!!!!!
Modern department stores and smart specialty shops, together with pro- gressive and complete appliance, drug, furniture and variety stores in the downtown area, do an outstanding job of serving the needs of shoppers, not only of Cumberland County, but of quite a portion of the surrounding counties, ex- tending into South Carolina.
Unlike the national trend, Fayetteville's downtown area has shown a continuous development and growth. During the past year, extensive additions have been made by Belk-Hensdale, J. C. Penney Co. and Sears department stores and the S. H. Kress variety store has been enlarged considerably.
Many buildings in the downtown area have been modernized to match new bank buildings of Branch Bank & Trust Co., First-Citizens Bank & Trust Co. and First Union National Bank. Guaranty Savings & Loan has recently com- pleted its second enlargement and complete modernization. Home Federal Savings & Loan has also completed an extensive enlargement which will complement Fayetteville's new Federal building.
Most all major auto dealers have basic operation in Downtown Fayetteville.
Many restaurants and snack bars are scattered throughout the area to serve shoppers and those who are employed in offices throughout Downtown Fayetteville.

INTRODUCTION
Not following the present nation-wide trend, Downtown Fayetteville has continued to develop and expand in spite of several new shopping centers in the outlying areas! This can be attributed primarily to three factors.
Capitol
1. Progressive financial institutions and merchants have kept pace with the population growth by programs of both expansion and modernization.
2. City, County and Federal agencies are still located in the downtown business area and are in the process of expansion.
3. The Downtown Fayetteville Area is just off Highway I 95, US 13, US 301, US 401, NC 24, NC 53, NC 87 and NC 210. This opens a convenient door to a tremendous potential among the population along those routes as well as the tremendous New York/Florida tourist market which passes just off the down- town area.
