INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., publishers of Southeastern Direc- tories (publishers of the Fuquay Springs and Varina City Di- rectory since 1959), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1961 edition of the Fuquay Springs and Varina City Directory, which also includes the rural route residents.
Confidence in the growth of Fuquay Springs and Varina's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Fuquay Springs and Varina to the world.
The enviable position occupied by Hill's Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the busi- ness and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and the Fuquay Springs and Varina Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertain- ing to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional con- cerns of Fuquay Springs and Varina, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activ- ities of Fuquay Springs and Varina. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the adver- tisements and business cards of firms and individuals desir- ing to present a more complete list of their products or serv- ices than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the at- tention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In progressive communities like Fuquay Springs and Varina, the necessity of having this kind of infor- mation up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvi- ous. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major de- partment, printed on white paper. This is the only record in ex- istence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Fuquay Springs and Varina, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the resi- dences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the household- ers and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a man- ufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Fuquay Springs and Varina.
The Fuquay Springs and Varina Out-of-Town City Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Fuquay Springs and Varina City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 of these Directory Libraries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated and of which Hill Directory Co., Inc., is a member.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

History
Fuquay Springs and Varina are twin cities incorporated into the same city limits of Fuquay Springs.
The site of the once-famous mineral springs, the town was originally named SIPPEHAW, an Indian word which was said to mean "good will." Its history goes back to ante-bellum days when its medicinal springs made the area famous as a health resort to which people came from great distances to drink the water. The original mineral springs is still in existence.
In its early history, Fuquay-Varina was chiefly a trading and shopping center for the people in this section. About the only manufacturing enterprise was a lumber mill. Today the biggest industry in town is the tobacco market which was

started in 1908. It is now the twelfth largest in the United States. There are 12 warehouses and two redrying plants here.
One large industry here hems napkins, towels and diapers. Another industry makes vibrators for auto radios and also for government industrial amplifications. The town has grown both agriculturally and industrially.
The suburbs of the town have spread out in all directions, especially along the highway north and south of the business section. The stores present a fine appearance and include all varieties of merchandising establishments.
The country surrounding Fuquay-Varina is rolling, its lo- cation being approximately on the Eastern edge of the indus- trially important Piedmont section and the Western edge of the coastal plain within 100 miles of the Atlantic Ocean.
It's a growing town, a town where the folks pull together Some people may refer to it as Fuquay Others may refer to it as Varina
Still others may call it Fuquay Springs
Of course it is FUQUAY-VARINA.
Tobacco Market
The Fuquay-Varina tobacco market is the largest bright leaf tobacco market in the world with two sets of buyers and it is showing a more rapid growth than any market in the Mid- dle Belt. It has just completed one of its most successful sea- sons throughout its long history. A total of 31,525,676 pounds were sold during the season with an average of $54.52 per hun- dred. It is believed official figures will show our tobacco mar- ket either with the State's top average or near the top. The market has twelve warehouses, two sets of buyers, two redry- ing plants and storages for over 35,000 hogsheads. Value of an- nual tobacco crop is about $20,000,000.
Perhaps one of the most important factors that makes Fu- quay-Varina the most outstanding tobacco market in the flue cured area is the geographical location with respect to the area in which quantities of high quality leaf are produced. The market is located in Southern Wake County, in the heart of to- bacco land with more than one hundred and fifty million pounds of tobacco grown each year within 50 miles of the market. It is significant that in 20 years, 1934 to 1954, the market grew from a five million to a thirty-five million pound market.
The Fuquay-Varina market is served by three national highways and one state highway which provide easy, direct access to processing centers and shipping points. The Atlantic ports of Wilmington and Morehead City, North Carolina, and Hampton Roads, Virginia, are six hours or less by highways from the market. The services of two railroads are available for the transportation of tobacco to any point in the nation.
After almost 50 years of growth and seasoning, one of the most important developments has been the character and cal- iber of the warehouse firms that operate the market. The Fu- quay-Varina firms comprise men with an aggregate of hun- dreds of years of experience. They know how to display and sell leaf to the best advantage and are experts in the art of pub- lic relations and salesmanship. Their warehouses are new, well-lighted and modern. Services to the growers and buyers

is a by-word. Perhaps one of the intangible requirements of a good market that falls more properly under the category of fa- cilities, is the atmosphere of friendliness and helpfulness that is found in the warehouse during a sale. This point is recog- nized by grower and buyer alike over a wide area.
A fine spirit of cooperation prevails throughout the whole community and the Fuquay-Varina tobacco market is valued by all.
