INTRODUCTION and GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories (publishers of the Fuquay-Varina City Direc- tory since 1959), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1963 edition of the Fuquay-Varina City Directory, which also includes the rural route residents.

Confidence in the growth of Fuquay-Varina's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Fuquay-Varina to the world.

The enviable position occupied by Hill's Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by render- ing the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organi- zation, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and the Fuquay-Varina Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the fol- lowing order :-

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete pres- entation of their products or services. Following this is the Classified Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional con- cerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under ap- propriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seek- ing sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Fuquay-Varina the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the com- mon intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Fuquay- Varina, and the name, official personnel, nature and ad- dress of each firm and corporation in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by

INTRODUCTION

the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the num- bers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a man- ufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Fuquay-Varina and vicinity.

The Fuquay-Varina Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Fuquay- Varina City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and towns throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

History

Fuquay Springs and Varina are twin cities incorporated in the name of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina.

The site of the once famous mineral springs, the town was originally named "Sippihaw", an Indian word which was said to mean "good will." Its history goes back to ante- bellum days when its medicinal springs made the area famous as a health resort to which people came from great distances to drink the waters. The original mineral springs are still in existence.

In its early history, Fuquay-Varina was chiefly a trading and shopping center for the people in this section. About the only manufacturing enterprise was the lumber mill. Today the biggest industry in town is the tobacco market which was started in 1908. It is now the twelfth largest in the United States. There are 12 warehouses and two tobacco redrying plants located in the immediate area.

There are two well-known industrial plants located in Fuquay-Varina at present. One industry hems napkins, towels and diapers. This plant is in the process of expanding in order that the manufacturing of children's panties can be added to present lines. The other industry now located in the area manufactures vibrators for auto radios and also for government and industrial uses.

The town has had a very stable growth both agricultur- ally and industrially, with the town's growth in all directions .. especially along the highways north and south of the . present business section of Fuquay-Varina.

Location and Description

The town of Fuquay-Varina is located in the approxi- mate center of the State of North Carolina and in the south- western edge of Wake County. It is situated at the junction of U. S. Highway 401 and North Carolina Highways 55 and 42. Fuquay-Varina is located 14 miles south of Raleigh, the capital of the State of North Carolina.

Fuquay-Varina is two and one half square miles in area and is the third largest municipality in Wake County. It is in the Middle Creek Township, Central Piedmont Section (District 5) of Agricultural statistics and is in the Fourth Congressional District and Seventh Judicial District. Its pop- ulation, 1960 census, was 3,389.

The country surrounding Fuquay-Varina is rolling, its location being approximately in the eastern edge of the Piedmont section and the western edge of the coastal plain within 100 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. With the land of a rolling nature, this community or area has never been ex- posed to flood conditions, in fact, never high waters.

This community has an excellent geographical advan- tage in its close proximity to larger cities, and availability to services usually not found so close to smaller communi-

INTRODUCTION

ties ... for example: ... road miles from the town of Fuquay- Varina to neighboring cities are as follows: Raleigh, 14 miles; Durham, 31 miles; Fayetteville, 42 miles; Winston- Salem, 90 miles; Wilmington, 108 miles; Charlotte, 128 miles; Asheville, 235 miles; Morehead City, 164 miles.

Although the population of Fuquay-Varina is 3,389, this just includes the city limits. The population of the trading area is approximately 15,000-20,000, which is due to a thickly populated country area.

Local Government

Mayor and Town Commissioners (5). These are elected for a two-year term. Beginning in 1963, all commissioners will serve four-year staggered terms. A full-time town man- ager, secretary, policemen, water and sewer supervisor, and garbage collector are under the supervision of the town council.

TAX RATE LOCALLY: City tax rate is $1.20; county tax rate is $1.45; total is $2.65 per hundred. Assessed valuation is $9,943,173.00, based on fifty per cent of the actual value of the real estate and personal property. The bonded debt is $837,500.00.

In North Carolina, State taxes make up more than sev- enty per cent of the total tax package; this is true because North Carolina is almost unique in the fact that the State Government has relieved local government of all financial responsibilities for the public schools and roads.

Accepting these major public functions has tended to boost the level of State taxes. At the same time, however, there has been a corresponding reduction in the levels of local taxation.

FIRE PROTECTION: Fuquay has two fire stations, one rural fire department and one town fire department. Both are extremely active. The town fire department is town owned and operated, while the county fire department is a corporation.

The town fire department has twenty-six voluntary firemen, while the county has twenty-one. All are volun- teers, very well trained, have more than adequate equip- ment, and each department has men who are certified first aid men. The rural department normally serves an area of about a seven-mile radius.

POLICE PROTECTION: The town has six policemen on the force, headed by a very capable Chief ... two police cars ... facilities are quite adequate . . . law enforcement is good ... and police protection is excellent. In addition to the town police forces, two North Carolina State Patrolmen live in the town. Also, the services of the County Sheriff's office are available at all times.

INSURANCE RATES: Fuquay-Varina is classified as grade 8 with the Insurance Commission's office in Raleigh and from this the insurance rates on individual buildings are rated out of the Fire Insurance Rating Bureau in Ra- leigh.

WATER: A modern filter plant was put into service in recent years. This plant has a present purification capacity of approximately 500,000 gallons per day.

13

INTRODUCTION

The daily consumption is over 250,000 gallons. If the need occurred, the supply could be increased to over one million gallons per day. There were approximately 1,000 meters in use as of January 1, 1961.

The supply of raw water is practically inexhaustible, being secured from five deep wells. The distribution system consists of pipe lines of sufficient size to meet the demands of all residences and industries.

SEWER: A new $500,000 sewer disposal plant is ready for use.

Charges for sewer service for all water users, available to the town's sewage collection, will be based on an amount equal to 50 per cent of the charge assessed for water.

TRANSPORTATION: Highway U. S. 401 and N. C. 55 and 42. Average 24-hour count on Highway No. 401 north in 1961, 5,300 and south, 3,450; on No. 55 north, 3,100; and 42 west, 2,250.

AIR: Airport facilities for Fuquay-Varina are located one mile north of town, just off highway 55. The landing field consists of a single sod strip in good condition which is privately owned but is made available for public use without charge. The strip is 1,550 feet in length, with approximately a half mile clearance unobstructed on each end. Hangar fa- cilities and fuel are available at all times.

There are commercial airlines serving Fuquay-Varina through the Raleigh-Durham airport only 30 minutes away.

BUS SERVICE: Served by two bus companies-South- ern Coach and Carolina Trailways. These companies serve the community with nine scheduled departures daily. One mile from town the Greyhound Bus Company has five scheduled departures and seven northbound and seven southbound express daily.

RAILWAYS: Fuquay-Varina is served by the Norfolk- Southern Railway Company and the Durham and Southern Railway Company.

CLIMATE: The climate of Fuquay-Varina is mild and healthful, and is ideal for industry and pleasant living. The summers are long but not excessively hot. The winters are short and not excessively cold.

Manufacturers can readily perceive advantages to be derived in the saving of fuel costs, both to themselves and to their employees, because of the favorable climatic condi- tions.

Fuquay-Varina climate for 1962, compiled by the wea- ther station at the Raleigh-Durham Airport was as follows: Av. Max. Temp. 68.8; Av. Min. Temp. 47.4; Av. Mean Temp. 58.1; Total Rain in Av. 4.02 per mo.

LOCAL SCHOOLS: A very extensive survey of local schools was made and we found them quite adequate and very progressive. The local schools have an enrollment of about 1,400 students; past increases have been quite similar to national trends. Present facilities are quite adequate for forecastable trends. Most buildings are relatively new and all have very modern equipment and teaching aids. This includes an Elementary, Primary, Junior High and Senior High Schools. More than average emphasis is given to ac- tivities and interests such as music, vocational and physical training. Included in activities are special programs for re-

tarded children, band, chorus, home economics, library work, full-time counselor, and special emphasis is placed on vocational agriculture and shop. Complete program of high school athletics is available for boys and girls. The Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges has recently accredited the Elementary, Junior and Senior High Schools.

Schools are staffed by approximately 60 teachers, all well qualified, with at least Bachelors degrees and compen- sated with salaries comparable to neighboring states.

RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES: There are 17 churches in the surrounding area, but in the immediate area there are 9. There are 18 clergymen living in the area. Activities of the churches are varied. In 5 of them an extended program for young people is carried out. Most all of them have active men's and women's groups and circles. One or several of the churches are always building additions or improving their existing facilities. Religious assistance is always avail- able in the community. Predominate religions are: Bap- tist, Methodist and Presbyterian.

HEALTH AND MEDICAL RESOURCES: A branch of Wake County Hospital, located in Fuquay, opened in Sep- tember of 1960. There are 29 people on the staff of this 20-bed hospital. The Clinic is 3-bed. Rates are $12.50 per day for semi-private.

Located in the community are 4 white and 1 colored Physician, 1 Surgeon, 2 Optometrists, 1 Chiropractor and 3 Dentists. Other hospitals nearby are: 4 in Raleigh, 17 miles away; Duke Hospital in Durham, 20 miles away. Locally there are three rest homes with rates of $130 per month. There are Research Medical Centers at Chapel Hill and Dur- ham.

RECREATIONAL AND LEISURE PROGRAM: One City Park-Directed by a Park Commission. This park has picnic facilities, two tennis courts and outside play equip- ment, and a $24,000 swimming pool and bath house. The Park Commission has approved additional improvements to the park and these were begun in the spring of 1961.

One Amusement Park-One mile from town, privately owned. This park has all types of rides, a dance pavilion and a race track.

Golf Course-Nine-hole golf course completed in July, 1961. Plans are now in the process for completing nine more holes, making it an eighteen-hole course. A nice club house already has been built.
