INTRODUCTION

HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1952-53 edition of the Goldsboro City Directory.

Confidence in the growth of Goldsboro's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Goldsboro to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and resi- dents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Golds- boro Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.

Five Major Departments

The five major departments are arranged in the fol- lowing order :-

THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 25 to 368, on white paper. This is the only record in exist- ence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Goldsboro, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

THE BUYERS' GUIDE, preceding the Classified and separately paged from 1 to 88, on goldenrod paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and professional interests of Goldsboro. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive community like Golds- boro, the necessity of having this kind of information im- mediately available, is obvious. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 457 to 527, on yellow paper. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in al- phabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous interests of the community. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an important part in the daily activities of the comme ial and professional world. More buyers and sellers ment through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.

T DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREI "ND AVENUE GUIDE, on pink paper, covers pages 529 to In this section the numbered streets are ar-

ranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective cross- ing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the desig- nation of homes and places of business having telephones.

THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, on blue paper, begins opposite page 610.

Municipal Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Goldsboro.

The Goldsboro Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Golds- boro City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Goldsboro Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Association, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 600 Directory Libraries in- stalled in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by mem- bers of the Association of North American Directory Pub- lishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recog- nition by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Di- rectory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

HISTORY

Goldsboro is a community of progress which has been kept alive since its charter as a municipality was issued 105 years ago, in 1847.

Goldsboro has long been known for its culture, barbecue cooking, community spirit, citizens of liberal thought and social conscience, and progressive industry. The early com- munity was settled as a village of 100 persons when Waynes- borough, a settlement in a nook of the Neuse, was relocated to be on the railroad when the Wilmington & Weldon Rail-

16

INTRODUCTION

road traversed the present site of Greater Goldsboro. It was the crossroads of rail transportation in eastern North Carolina when the railroad from the blue Atlantic to the Blue Ridge Mountains of western Carolina was constructed across the W. & W. Railroad, now the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.

In municipal government, Goldsboro was one of the first communities in the Southeast to adopt the city mana- ger plan. It continues the city manager-aldermanic form of government.

From Goldsboro went Charles B. Aycock in 1900 to as- sume the leadership of North Carolina as its Governor and launch the Old North State on a parade of progress in gov- ernment, education, and industry which has continued for more than half a century.

OTHER DATA

LOCATION: Goldsboro is located in eastern North Caro- lina, three miles north of the Neuse River and 52 miles southeast of Raleigh, the State capital. Its central loca- tion partially explains the city's consistent growth as the chief merchandising and distributing point of a rich agri- cultural area of more than 250,000 people.

POPULATION: Census reports reflect the steady growth of the city. The 1950 U. S. Census showed a population of 21,454 in the city proper. The population in 1910 was 6,107, and by 1930 it had grown to 14,985, and by 1940, 17,274. Wayne County, of which Goldsboro is the county seat, in 1930 had a population of 53,013; in 1940, 58,328, and in 1950, 64,267.

INDUSTRY: The city's people find employment in mer- chandising, distributing and manufacturing. Goldsboro's more than 40 manufacturing plants produce lumber and lumber products, brick, agricultural implements, cotton yarn, veneer, furniture, cottonseed products, meal, grits, stock feed, electric wire, textile products, meat products, frozen foods. Its three tobacco redrying plants handle millions of pounds of tobacco yearly, much of it shipped from other points in eastern North Carolina and from South Carolina, Georgia. Tennessee and Kentucky.

HOUSING: Housing is modern and living costs are rea- sonable. Local markets afford for most of the year an

INTRODUCTION

abundance of vegetables and fruits produced within a short radius of the city. Local markets also afford a bountiful supply of poultry, dairy products and meats for the entire year.

RECREATION: Ample recreational facilities are pro- vided. A recreational council provides a year-around pro- gram of sports and activities for the city, including basket- ball, physical education classes, swimming team, play- grounds directed by specialists, amateur baseball and soft- ball. The city is a member of the Coastal Plains Baseball (Class D) League. A Civic Theatre group has provided stimulating entertainment for many years. The city's pub- lic library is one of the oldest in the state, and at the same time is one of the most modern in its facilities.

Goldsboro has three parks with a combined area of more than 300 acres. One of these, Herman Park, has the largest menagerie in eastern North Carolina. Included in the recreational assets is a new municipal stadium. A well- planned 18-hole golf course is a part of the park system.

Four modern movie houses complete the recreational picture. These theatres play first-run pictures and an oc- casional road show or vaudeville.

CHURCHES: Goldsboro is not neglectful of religious activities. There are 19 denominations and branches of ec- clesiastical bodies having 50 churches, for both white and Negro citizens. The denominations include: Baptist, Cath- olic, Christian, Disciples of Christ, Episcopal, Free Will Bap- tist, Friends, Holiness, Jewish, Latter Day Saints of Jesus Christ, Lutheran, Methodist, Pentecostal Holiness, Presby- terian, Salvation Army, Evangelical Baptist, and three minor groups.

EDUCATION: Goldsboro graded schools were the first chartered public schools in North Carolina and have a wide reputation for excellence of instruction. The Goldsboro High School is a member of the Southern Association of Col- leges and Secondary Schools, and its graduates are admitted to standard institutions of higher learning without exam- ination. The city has twelve public schools (elementary and high) for its students-seven white and five Negro, valued at $2,003,500, and a combined faculty of more than 135. In addition to the public schools, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of St. Mary maintain a parochial school which provides instruction from the kindergarten through

Beautiful and hospitable homes make Goldsboro a city of gracious living. The photograph above shows one of the modern homes.
