The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:
1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain: to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use
as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.
5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.
6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.
7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.
8. To co-operate with approved organization and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.
9. To avoid unfair competition.
10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

INTRODUCTION
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1934 edition of the Goldsboro City Directory.
Confidence in the growth of Goldsboro's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Goldsboro to the world.
The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Direc- tories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty co- operation of the business and professional men and resi- dents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Golds- boro Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order :-
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 17 to 40, printed on tinted paper, contains the advertisements of leading manufactur- ing, business and professional interests of Goldsboro. The advertisements are indexed under headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference advertising at its best, and merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. In a progressive com- munity like Goldsboro, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is obvious. General ap- preciation of this fact is evidenced by the many reference users of this City Directory service.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is included in pages 41 to 238. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Goldsboro, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, covers pages 241 to 286. In this section the names of the streets are arranged in alpha- betical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and con- cerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 289 to 324. This department lists the names of all business and professional concerns in alphabetical order

INTRODUCTION
under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable catalog of the numerous inter- ests of the community. The Directory is the common inter- mediary between buyer and seller. As such it plays an im- portant part in the daily activities of the commercial and professional world. More buyers and sellers meet through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium.
Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manu- facturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Goldsboro.
The Goldsboro Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Golds- boro City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Goldsboro Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of 450 Di- rectory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
General Review
Goldsboro is the county seat of Wayne County, one of the leading manufacturing and agricultural counties of North Carolina. It is the home of thirty well-established manufacturing plants, the principal products of which are brick, veneer, lumber, building supplies, cotton yarn, hosiery, tobacco, locomotives, farm implements, furniture and mat- tresses. The agricultural resources are practically unlim- ited, and Wayne County produces annually an average of thirty thousand bales of cotton, fifteen million pounds of tobacco, and tons of grain, hay and other food crops, to say nothing of live stock and poultry. Goldsboro is the market- ing center for these commodities, which makes it a prosper- ous city and a desirable one in which to locate.
The population of Goldsboro in 1910 was 6,107; in 1920, 11,296; in 1930, 14,985, and today Goldsboro claims approxi- mately 17,500 residents. The city is the shopping center of nearly 200,000 people residing within a radius of twenty-five miles.
Goldsboro, due to the nature of its surrounding terri- tory, its geographical location and its unsurpassed facilities, is rapidly developing into a commercial center. Recently sev- eral large manufacturers have located distributing branches here. Twenty-six passenger trains run to and from the city daily, which naturally is advantageous to the commercial traveler doing business in eastern North Carolina. Goldsboro is the gateway of eastern North Carolina, and as such, has a mission to perform, a mission that means much to man- kind in general, because here in this favored spot are found health, happiness and well-being.
Goldsboro dates back to the time of Sir Walter Raleigh, who, if he did nothing greater than exploit the section wherein is located the Gate City, is entitled to a full meed of praise for this one act. In the years that have elapsed since then, Goldsboro has pursued the even tenor of its way, and its citizens have been content to enjoy and prosper under its advantages until it has secured a foundation on which to create and which will enable it to build like the wise man of old-upon a solid rock that will withstand the storms of panics, short crops and the greed of politicians. In the building of this city to date, ideal citizenship has been kept constantly in mind, and with the greater duration of the visit of the "stranger within its gates," the more surely there comes the charm of contact with a hospitable, demo- cratic class of citizens whose ideals are based on character rather than bank account.
Here is the dividing line between the frigid climate of the North and the enervating climate of the tropics.
Here are found nine months of summer, with only three of autumn or winter temperature, none unpleasant.
Here one is within a daylight journey of New York, Phil- adelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Savannah, Atlanta and Jacksonville.
Here one is within a thirty-hour ride of Boston, Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, Buffalo, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Louisville, Memphis, New Orleans, Mobile and Palm Beach, embracing an area containing a population of over seventy millions.
13
INTRODUCTION
Here one is within a few hours' ride of the finest surf bathing on the Atlantic Coast, on the beaches of Wrights- ville, Morehead City and Beaufort; and here one can live in the warmth of a genial sun and yet be in touch with the life of the nation.
Health conditions are ideal, the death rate averaging less than nine to a thousand. The city owns its splendid water system, furnishing at a minimum cost the purest of soft drinking water. Goldsboro has twenty miles of hard- surfaced streets, thirty miles of paved sidewalks, one of the best white-way systems in the South, well-equipped parks and playgrounds, permanent health and sanitation officers with efficient staffs, a permanent community center, a na- tionally-known organization of associated charities, one of the best and most active Chambers of Commerce in the Southern states, a wide-awake Merchants' Association, an efficient traffic department, Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, and posts of all the leading fraternal orders. Living conditions, from a health standpoint, are beyond criticism, and living conditions from a financial standpoint are within the means of all. Electric power, gas, telephone and water rates are equal to those of the average city. Being located in an agri- cultural district, country produce is plentiful and reasonable in price. All roads leading into Goldsboro are hard-surfaced. Hotel facilities are ample. Board and room in private homes is available. Modern apartment houses have been provided.
Wayne County ranks high in agriculture. Here are grown hay, alfalfa, cowpeas, cabbage, beets, beans, peas, celery, truck garden products, strawberries, dewberries, huckleber- ries, melons, peaches, plums, cherries, apples, pecans and numerous products of the soil. This is the land where three crops can be grown on the same soil during the year, and a land which, by reason of its freedom from rocks, is easily and economically tilled. Here can be produced from one acre of land, 1,500 pounds of tobacco, or 1,500 pounds of cotton.
Thirty years ago Goldsboro was a village of very few inhabitants. The soil, always unusually fertile, had scarcely begun to yield the wealth that is now pouring out in such abundance. The production of tobacco, now a great indus- try, was then only being introduced in this section. The con- trast between the Goldsboro of that day and 1934 is amazing. Population has greatly increased. Manufacturing industries employing hundreds of workers at a good scale of wages now occupy acres that were then open fields.
Today Goldsboro is an ideal location for factories. The diversified industries now here are in a flourishing condition, developing to a marked degree each year; and the combina- tion of climate, location, transportation, health, hospitality and other favorable conditions will produce a substantial and steady growth in population and wealth, justifying the judgement of investors and homeseekers who locate here.
Goldsboro has three railroads-the Atlantic Coast Line, the Southern and the Norfolk Southern. These great sys- tems are among the best in the U. S., and provide trans- portation facilities second to none. They lead to the sea- shore, to the North and South, and to the great Central West. The many agricultural products of Wayne County find an outlet through the county seat, and the factories ship their products to every land.
14
INTRODUCTION
Goldsboro is located on two national highways-No. 70, from the Atlantic Ocean to the great cities of the Middle West, and No. 17, from Maine to Florida.
Wayne County has good roads, of great importance to the farmer and the motorist, and adding to the pleasure and convenience of all who reside in this section.
Goldsboro has one of the finest and best directed school systems in the state, where a thorough and exacting course of instruction assures a splendid public school education and a good college preparation. " There are eleven school build- ings, constructed on the latest approved plan for educational institutions.
Goldsboro has a high moral and religious tone. There are thirty-five churches of leading denominations, whose congregations work in close harmony for the advancement of the common weal, and who gladly welcome all newcomers. Anyone is welcome here, regardless of his, or her, religious belief, and is free to act in accordance with his convictions.
Goldsboro has a well-constructed water and sewerage system. It was built with a consideration for the future and is ample for the supply and sanitation of a city much larger than Goldsboro. With an abundance of water, Goldsboro has a guarantee which attracts factories, as well as individ- uals. The fire-fighting force, backed by modern appliances, is efficient and watchful.
It is recognized today that the great South, with its amazing number of unexploited resources and possibilities of development, its superior conditions for agricultural pro- duction, and its healthful and charming climate, affords the best field of opportunity. The only debatable question is: Which Southern state and what location in that state offers the best combination of the particular conditions one de- sires?
Wonderful is the South, and great beyond our dreams will be its future, but in all these Southern states there will be none to compare in the rapidity of its growth with the pre-eminently well-favored state of North Carolina.
Goldsboro's latest development is its municipal airport. This landing field was established under the supervision of Government engineers and is shown on all Government air maps. Goldsboro's airport is being used daily by Govern- ment and commercial aviators, and plans for giving eastern North Carolina air mail service through Goldsboro's airport are now being considered by U. S. postal officials.
Write or wire the Goldsboro Chamber of Commerce for detailed information about Goldsboro.

H
TRADE! You like
to patronize those concerns who are in business to stay.
It's human to expect that such busi- ness establishments always stand back of the wares they sell.
The advertising in this Directory is suggestive of the stability and per- manency of the advertisers.
Frauds, fakes, get-rich-quicks and other schemers have little use for directory advertising. It lives too long.
The modern City Directory is a business institution. It occupies a place peculiarly its own. It is as necessary to the progress and de- velopment of a city generally as anything naturally would be which deals with such a fundamental as the citizens themselves.
