Population

The estimated population of Greater Greensboro is 60,426, based on le number of individuals' names in the alphabetical section of the direc- bry, with due allowance for children and for women whose names are not sted separately from those of their husbands. Territory immediately djacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are oncerned, is included in the directory, and, likewise, in the population stimate.

Four Major Departments

The several essential departments are arranged in the following rder :--

THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 25 to 92, printed on tinted paper, con- tins the advertisements of leading manufacturing, business and profes- onal interests of Greensboro. These pages will be found particularly iteresting and instructive to substantial purchasing factors. The adver- sements have been carefully grouped by departments and are indexed nder headings descriptive of the business represented. This is reference dvertising at its best, and, as such, merits a survey by all buyers eager familiarize themselves with sources of supply. The city's activities, in tany interesting phases, are authentically pictured. In a large commer- al and industrial center like Greensboro, the necessity of having this ind of information immediately available, is very great, and frequently, ressing. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal ipport the city directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves.

THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms hd corporations is included in pages 93 to 524. A feature of this section the inclusion of the wife's name in parentheses following that of the usband.

THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND VENUE GUIDE, covers pages 525 to 674. In this section the named treets and avenues are arranged in alphabetical order, followed by the umbered streets in numerical order; the residences and business houses re arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and he names of householders and business concerns are placed opposite the umbers.

THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 677 731. This department lists the various manufacturing, mercantile nd professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate head- igs. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome f the business interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between Buyer and Seller." As such it plays no small part in he daily doings of the business world. "More goods are bought and sold hrough the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium."

History

n March 15, 1781, the Battle of lford Courthouse was fought, five es from what is now Greensboro. intent was General Nathaniel yene on crippling Cornwallis that little realized he was to title a ropolis of the future. Although battle was not decisive, Gen. en fought so fiercely that Corn- lis entered the Battle of York- In unable to stem the triumphant 'e of the American forces, and the ory at the end of the Revolution been laid by authorities to the It of the Battle of Guilford Court- .se.

milford County was settled in 1772 scotch-Irish and German stock n Pennsylvania, and English and ·. ch Highlander immigrants. It was :od for Frederick, Earl of Guil- d, better known as Lord North. Its ple were simple and rural. They sessed no large estates or wealth. ey were intensely religious, demo .. Lic, arduous in the pursuit and ancement of education, energetic thrifty, home-loving and liberty- king. The original county seat was rtinsville, where was fought the ttle of Guilford Courthouse.

n 1808, Greensboro was founded as county seat of Guilford and ned for the famous General eene. The town site was located the exact center of the county. nmissioners paid Ralph Gorrell $98 42 acres of land, and the new inty capital and courthouse was d off.

Almost from its beginning Greens- o forged ahead in education. Dr. vid Caldwell established his noted og College," the forerunner of sev- l academies and schools founded 1816, 1820, 1833 and 1836, leading to the chartering in 1838 of

Greensboro Female College, the grad- ing of public schools in 1872, the establishment of North Carolina Col- lege for Women in 1892, and the building of three Negro colleges.

Prior to 1860 the city was Whig, and opposed to secession. John A. Gil- mer, of Greensboro, was offered a place on Lincoln's cabinet, but the city, of course, finally supported the state and the Confederacy. It was at Greensboro that Gen. Joseph E. John- ston disbanded his army, following his surrender to Sherman, and it was in the railway station here that Jef- ferson Davis held his last cabinet meeting. Greensboro's citizens have always taken a prominent part in state affairs. John M. Morehead, as governor, was one of the state's fore- most proponents of good roads as early as 1840.

Greensboro had a cotton mill as early as 1834, but it was in Recon- struction days that it began to be an important commercial and industrial factor. Its central position in the state then, as now, was its chief reason for growth. Here converged the crossroads of the state. In 1856 came the first railroad.

At the turn of the century Greens- boro's real growth began. In 1892 came Caesar and Moses Cone to establish their cotton mills, and to begin such well-balanced industrial development as is rarely seen. Stead- ily ahead Greensboro has forged in- dustrially, commercially and educa- tionally, capitalizing its advantages of accessibility, climate, ideal labor conditions, agriculture, power, trans- portation, raw materials and a spirit of progressiveness. Here, also, crosses the main east-west traffic arteries of the state and one of the main north-south highways. Other important roads converge at Greensboro to make it the hub of highway transportation.

The Piedmont area of North and South Carolina contains 42% of the population of the two states, and pro- duces over 73% of their industrial output. From Greensboro into all sec- tions of the Piedmont diverge the belts of traffic, over railroads and highways. That Greensboro is the

logical, dominant "pivot" of this is demonstrated by the fact that 2500 traveling salesmen and ag have made their homes and h quarters here.

Two railroads serve Greensb the Southern and the Atlantic Yadkin. Forty-eight passenger tr arrive and depart daily in six di tions from a new and modern 000,000 station. The main north south double-track line of the Sol ern converges with the main east west state-wide line of the South at Greensboro. Municipal Government

Greensboro has been especially for- inate in its selection of those men whose hands its affairs of govern- ent are placed, and great municipal rogress has been made by means of he complete confidence held by the ixpayers in the integrity and ability ¿ the municipal officials. The water works have a capacity of one billion, twenty-three million gal- lons, with a twenty-one million gal- lon reservoir for filtered water, a supply sufficient to serve the city for many years to come.

At the helm of Greens- oro's municipal government have een business men of the highest haracter and business judgment, ften at great personal sacrifice to hemselves. The mileage of paved streets in the corporate limits has steadily in- creased from 32 miles in 1922 to 138 miles in 1929. Thoroughly modern automatic traffic control systems have been installed at twenty-five possible danger points. The streets, totalling 270 miles, are well-kept and clean.

Greensboro's public school system is a point of genuine pride, it having been recently rated 96.4 out of a pos- sible hundred by the North Carolina Department of Education. The 10,000 school children have 22 modern school
