INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
HILL DIRECTORY CO., Inc., publishers of Southeastern Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1961 edition of the Hamlet City Directory, which also includes Rural Route Residents.
This is the first Hill Directory of Hamlet and is completely standardized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North American Directory Publishers.
Confidence in the growth of Hamlet's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflect- ing Hamlet to the world.
The enviable position occupied by Hill's Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the results of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Hamlet Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Four Major Departments
The four major departments are arranged in the following order :-
I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional con- cerns of the city and vicinity, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city and vicinity. Preceding this catalog, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and busi- ness cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference ad- vertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a progressive community like Hamlet, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common interme- diary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and pro- fessional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occu-

pation and address of cach adult resident of Hamlet, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the community.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major de- partment, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the resi- dences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respec- tive crossing points on each street. Special features of this sec- tion are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.
IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY on blue paper, is the fourth major department.
Community Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a man- ufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Hamlet and vicinity.
There are more than 1,000 of these Directory Libraries, in- stalled and maintained in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada through the courtesy of members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated, and of which Hill Directory Co., Inc. is a member.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

INTRODUCTION
General Review
Hamlet came into being shortly after the Union armies made their famous march through the Carolinas in 1865, leaving in their path total destruction. Such was the case of John Shortridge, whose woolen mill was burned in Rock- ingham, N. C., six miles to the west of the present location of Hamlet. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Shortridge bought property on Mark's Creek and rebuilt his mill. As new residents ar- rived, the name was changed from Sandridge to Hamlet, meaning small town.
Located in the Sandhills region of the state, Hamlet is 75 miles east of Charlotte on U. S. Highway 74; 100 miles south of the state capital Raleigh on N. C. 177; and 7 miles north of the South Carolina border.

INTRODUCTION
Although small in area Hamlet is known throughout the United States as "The Hub of the Seaboard Railroad." In 1954 the Seaboard Railroad located it's new $12,000,000 classi- fication yard in Hamlet. This facility provides swift classifi- cation of all trains on each direction, which affords excellent shipping connections to all sections of the country. The Sea- board also has its diesel engine and car repair shops located in Hamlet. These provide major repairs for diesels and other rolling stock for the entire system. As the leading railroad terminal of the South, Hamlet provides overnight rail accom- modations to and from Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Daily train service is provided to Atlanta, and the Southwestern United States. Direct connections are available to Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville. A large percentage of the 4,460 population is employed by the Seaboard. Other sources of income for residents include two furniture fac- tories; six textile mills in and around Hamlet; one of the largest manufacturers of dairy products; two lumber yards; a printing company which prints seven papers, two of which are distributed over the entire state.
Banking facilities are good. Commercial State Bank, Southern National Bank, and the Hamlet Building and Loan Association are aggressive organizations providing financial aid to industrial and commercial enterprises.
'Surrounded by various lakes, Hamlet is a fisherman's paradise. There are numerous private ponds and the State maintains an immense wildlife refuge in which are found nine lakes amply stocked with a variety of game fish. Quail, deer, and turkey are plentiful in the surrounding Sandhills.

kinds of sports possible. The summer program of Little League and Junior Legion Baseball is a much looked forward to event by the sportsminded citizens in the county.
Hamlet has one of the highest scholastic ratings in the State. The educational programs includes 12 grades. Modern elementary and junior high school buildings for both white and negro students have just recently been completed. St. An- drews College in Laurinburg N. C., 16 miles east, will open its doors for the first time in the fall of 1961, to both day and night students. The churches of Hamlet work together in a spirit of close co-operation. A full calendar of religious ac- tivities is made available by the local Ministerial Association.
The Hamlet Hospital, locally owned and operated, and the Richmond County Hospital provide the latest in modern medi- cine to the peoples of Richmond County.

One of Sixteen Churches In Hamlet
Beautiful homes and well kept yards are a source of pride to Hamlet. In the spring many visitors come to Hamlet just to see the numerous dogwood blossoms and the thousands of azaleas and camellias.
Construction was begun in July of 1960 on a modern sew- erage plant for Hamlet. Completion of this plant which will serve the town and surrounding residential districts, is ex- pected in April of 1962. Construction is soon to begin on the National Guard Armory to be built here. These are just two examples of the new buildings being constructed.
The bonded debt of Hamlet is $429,000. The City Council voted to add $286,000 to the old debt, for the sewerage plant. The total debt is expected to be paid off in the fall of 1969.
