INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

HILL DIRECTORY COMPANY, publishers of Southeast- ern Directories (publishers of the Hamlet Directory since 1961), present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1963 edition of the Hamlet City Directory, which also includes Rural Route Residents.

Confidence in the growth of Hamlet's industry, popu- lation and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Direc- tory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflect- ing Hamlet to the world.

The enviable position occupied by HILL'S Directories in the estimation of the public, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the results of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Hamlet Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.

Four Major Departments

The four major departments are arranged in the following order:

I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major de- partment of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the advertisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presenta- tion of their products or services. Following this is the Classified Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional con- cerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. The Buyers' Guide represents reference advertising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversi- fied community like Hamlet, the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately avail- able is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary be- tween buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

803204

II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns, is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupa- tion and address of each adult resident of Hamlet, and the name

INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX

official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corpora- tion in the community.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the num- bered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respec- tive crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers.

IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a man- ufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as per- petual and reliable advertisements of Hamlet and vicinity.

The Hamlet Out-of-Town City Directory Library

Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Hamlet City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Hamlet Chamber of Commerce, Merchants Assn & Credit Bureau Inc, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and town throughout the U. S., Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Pub- lishers.

The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

General Review

Hamlet came into being shortly after the Union armies made their famous march through the Carolinas in 1865, leaving in their path total destruction. Such was the case of John Shortridge, whose woolen mill was burned in Rock- ingham, N. C., six miles to the west of the present location of Hamlet. Shortly thereafter, Mr Shortridge bought property

on Mark's Creek and rebuilt his mill. As new residents ar- rived, the name was changed from Sandridge to Hamlet, meaning small town.

Located in the Sandhills region of the state, Hamlet is 75 miles east of Charlotte on U. S. Highway 74; 100 miles south of the state capital Raleigh on N. C. 177; and 7 miles north of the South Carolina border.

Although small in area Hamlet is known throughout the United States as "The Hub of the Seaboard Railroad." In 1954 the Seaboard Railroad located its new $12,000,000 classi- fication yard in Hamlet. This facility provides swift classifi- cation of all trains on each direction, which affords excellent shipping connections to all sections of the country. The Sea- board also has its diesel engine and car repair shops located in Hamlet. These provide major repairs for diesels and other

rolling stock for the entire system. As the leading railroad terminal of the South, Hamlet provides overnight rail accom- modations to and from Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Daily train service is provided to Atlanta and the Southwestern United States. Direct connections are available to Charleston, Savannah, and Jacksonville. A large percentage of the 4,460 population is employed by the Seaboard. Other sources of income for residents include two furniture fac- tories; six textile mills in and around Hamlet; one of the largest manufacturers of dairy products; two lumber yards; a printing company which prints seven papers, two of which are distributed over the entire state.

Banking facilities are good. Commercial State Bank, Southern National Bank, and the Hamlet Building and Loan Association are aggressive organizations providing financial aid to industrial and commercial enterprises.

Surrounded by various lakes, Hamlet is a fisherman's paradise. There are numerous private ponds and the State maintains an immense wildlife refuge in which are found nine lakcs amply stocked with a variety of game fish. Quail, deer, and turkey are plentiful in the surrounding Sandhills.

The local Country Club and the famous Pinehurst golf courses are available. Boating, swimming and other sports arc enjoyed in the area. Two lighted athletic parks make all kinds of sports possible. The summer program of Little League and Junior Legion Baseball is a much looked forward to event by the sportsminded citizens in the county.

The churches of Hamlet work together in a spirit of close co-operation. A full calender of religious ac- tivities is made available by the local Ministerial Association.

The Hamlet Hospital, locally owned and operated, and the Richmond County Hospital provide the latest in modern medi- cine to the peoples of Richmond County.

Beautiful homes and well kept yards are a source of pride to Hamlet. In the spring many visitors come to Hamlet just to see the numerous dogwood blossoms and the thousands of azaleas and camellias.

Construction was begun in July of 1960 on a modern sew- erage plant for Hamlet. Completion of this plant which serves

The bonded debt of Hamlet is $393,000. The City Council voted to add $286,000 to the old debt, for the sewerage plant. The total debt is expected to be paid off in the fall of 1969.

Hamlet is an aggressive, growing community. Southern hospitality is the rule, not the exception among the residents. There is a close feeling of co-operation among the churches, civic organizations, merchants and the general public.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing protection against fraud- ulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Direc- tory Publishers in 1898, and adhered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one heading that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertising, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Directories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifi- cations, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.
